  1. That looks really good Nik, I like that scheme. she should fly fine, mine came in at 630g with 550g thrust off a 3S 2200, she needed a good throw to get going but flew really nice, half throttle flying is good and pretty nippy on full power. Hope to see some photos of her in the air when you get chance
  2. It’s been a while, but I’ve finally finished my Phantom, just got to wait for the rain to stop now so I can see if she flies. final weight with a 3S 2200 Graphene is 630g so hopefully power to weight shouldn’t be an issue like it was with the heavy gnat I built.
  3. I use one of these from hobbyking in cool weather powered by an old 5000 3S battery **LINK**
  4. Turnigy blue are fine, I will be using some 2200 turnigy graphene that I got during a previous sale. On full chat the FMS fan pulls very close to or even above 40A so I would go for a 55/60 A controller, The suggested 40A is definitely underpowered

  6. TIm, Yes, I'm assuming my original 4S unit had some sort of issue but no idea what, it doesn't look like there's any difference in the blades between the 3S and 4S versions, I'll have to wait for my 3S fan units to arrive to check it properly but the current draw seemed OK, 36A at full power
  7. Just starting to build the phantom, anyone already built one of these and have any tips or comments
  8. Finished the surgery on the gnat, I swapped the blades from one of the 4S fans to the 3S unit and installed that into the gnat. Getting 520g thrust and 50g lighter with using a 3S battery so hoping that when we are able to get out it’ll fly at last. In the meantime I’ve starting building the phantom
  9. Hi Martin, yes it was definitely only a 3 S I was using and I’d successfully spun it up to full speed about a dozen times before it failed. I went 4S as I saw quite a few people having issues with the provost, seems mainly solved in the end by losing weight and adding extra cheat holes so thought 4 S would be fine and I could always limit the throttle travel if it’s crazy fast. I did see some of the articles on edf dia Vs eflux dia, not that I fully understand them all but it just seemed really strange that thrust increased by so much without a thrust tube, as if the tube was actually constricting airflow with maybe back pressure impacting the fan.
  10. Thought I’d use the home time to see if I can get my gnat sorted. I bought a 3S FMS fan and a replacement 4S fan to try. I thought I’d test thrust before installing them so made up a rig and thrust tube as per the drawings. the 3 S fan gave 540g thrust with the thrust tube and 620g without it, unfortunately it decided to shed its blades whilst at pretty much full speed, quite an interesting experience i then put the 4S fan onto the rig and measured 750g with the thrust tube and 880g without it, does anyone know why having no thrust tube increases thrust, I thought the whole point of a thrust tube was to accelerate the air and create more thrust ? Any one any ideas ? now got to try and perform surgery on the gnat and swap the fans over, it looking forward to that. It it’s the only way I’m going to see if I just have a low power fan in the plane at the moment, best thrust on a 4S with the original fan in the plane is ~470 g
  11. Very nice Tim, gives me some hope that I’ll be able to get mine to fly 😀
  12. That looks very nice, looking forward to hearing how it flys. I received my new 4S FMS fan so did some basic testing on a quickly put together frame, the claim is 850g thrust, I added a thrust tube to the rig, the same as the gnat design, output diameter is ~40mm and measured 720g thrust, interestingly if I removed the thrust tube or opened it up on the rig to 50mm then the thrust went up to 780g. I now need to remove the fan from the plane, which could be interesting and see what that shows on the rig and swap them out. Still need to see how to get the weight down. as a matter of interest where is the battery placement in yours to balance it, with my 4S setup the battery is pretty much as far back as it will go without further modification.
  13. Following on from Tim’s post, I enlarged the breather hole to ~48x48mm and this has increased thrust slightly to about 520g with the battery hatch closed so a good mod to make, opening the battery hatch isn’t having any major effect, maybe adding ~5-10g extra thrust, I’m beginning to wonder if there’s something wrong with the fan unit so I’ve ordered another one up for trying out, in the meantime I’ll look at how to reduce the weight, I’ll start with a 4S 1800 as that will take 30g off and then investigate making lightening holes
