Those of us that had one, agree with your comments. A heavy but manageable trainer, if a bit fast at times for a beginner.
I remember going out with my sons to fly my first one, although I could just about fly, I didn’t have too much idea
of flying. On this day no one turned up at the field to “ help” me. That was norm in the early days of our club. We had about 20 members at the most.
So up it went, where I managed a couple of circuits before loosing confidence and orientation, down it went, luckily
still in our field.
The boys hadn’t see me cry for ages, but I did that day. The building, the covering but mostly the cost. I know someoneWho would lose the plot when she saw the mess.
I was lucky as when I’d calmed down, and examined it at home, the biggest damage was the nose wheel former had caved in.Plus a few dents in the foam and torn pro film.
Anyway it was flying again the following week, this time on a buddy box.
I had 2 HB,s to learn on. But have had a few since. I still enjoy flying them, especially when you know what you are doing.
I built one before COVID and flew it quite happily until a novice fancied it, and I sold it to him.
Never seen the guy or the plane since COVID.
Hence the intention of buying one of the items on eBay as a winter project.-

I built one of those when the plan came out.
Flew OK, but I thought the tail was a bit flimsy, and the tail warped slightly on covering.
It is capable of doing a lot more than I am.

Have a look at this Hi Boy on eBay. An absolute bargain.
never mind where you can see that the fuselage has been smashed in half. The tail looks wrong as well.

That guy is in Wells selling loads of bits on Marketplace. But…….
Another one I contacted as he is selling an old sunbeam amongst that lot, and I wanted more pictures before I drove to Wells.
Again no response what’s so ever. I’m sure they just put them on line and hope they sell themselves.
My winter project has been sorted ( well that lot don’t want to sell) I have found an old DB Sports Mascot.
I have acquired a drawing, and started stripping it down. But again the drawing and the plane are slightly different, so
here we go again.
Pity that wood is so dear these days.

Now that’s what I call well used. I’ve thrown away planes in better condition than that.
obviously not a flyer, or containing any idea what so ever about the hobby.
There you go, they walk amongst us.

No problem at all, I just wanted a view of what was in situ at the moment.
not the best of builds by the look of it, but I have bought a few turkeys in the past.
I bought an early DB Sports Jodel, which looked OK, until I started stripping it down.
the wings had melted with the wrong glue, the fuselage fell apart as I pulled the
profilm off, again wrong glue. My winter project turned into a full rebuild of wings etc.
SO I fancied an old Hi Boy for the winter project, well we all learnt to fly on one, but I wanted an idea of the true condition.
Which I haven’t got.

The guy in Clevedon has 2 on eBay. The second one is £75.
I have asked him for more pictures as the ailerons don’t look right, but he doesn’t want to play ball.

Years ago while playing Rugby on an Easter tour, in Yarmouth I think, we watch Newton Le Willows play, as we were one of the teams on that pitch after them.
Their star player was one Colin Welland, of Z Cars Kes, etc.
This springs to mind as I’d never heard of the place before or since.
I must lead a sheltered life.

Hi everyone
I’ve obtained a DB Sports Mascot, with damage. So I’m looking for a drawing, or a copy of, to bring it back to flying condition.
Im happy to pay whatever it costs, along with postage to Weston Super Mare.

I live in Weston S Mare, our field is just by the sea.
At home it’s a still and lovely day. Some days When you arrive at the field you can just about stand up.
over the years I have lost count of the amount of days I leave home full of Good intentions,
but finish up getting out of the car, have a walk round and then returning home. Thinking oh well always tomorrow.

A great plane, and flys really well.
mine is a bit tatty now, I have changed the position of the engine 3 times
now it is at 45 degree’s and I’m happy with it.
The plan and the write up seemed to cover the build very well.
I keep thinking of building another, except I have a couple of kits to finish off and at my age

I keep getting that look when I’m seen with sheets of wood.

Just seen this on eBay.
There doesn’t look much of a low boy kit among this lot.
A nice box and transfer, but nothing else.

I remember that airstrip, it was a mowed field between Jaywick and Clayton. So that Auster was a regular flyer over the area.
My parents stayed in the same bungalow in Jaywick every year, so we passed that strip daily.
Back then, Jaywick was worth going on holiday to, from looking at the press it’s a place to be avoided today.

I’m reading this thread with interest.
I just sold a plane on eBay, the first selling I have entered in for a while.
I could not believe how much they took off me for the privilege. Sold for £97 I received £84. When I contacted
them to discuss the fee’s they sent me a breakdown of their costs.
I will not be selling on eBay again.

I have built both, one from the plan, one from the Sarik kit of bits.
I bought the canopy for the smaller model and I found it doesn’t fit. So I made it from glueing scraps of wood
together and forming it by sanding it to the correct shape.
they both fly well, but feel like totally different models.
The larger model crashed due to a faulty ESC, but I still have the wings.
If I every rebuild it I would cut the bits out from the plan, and do the same on the canopy.
Personally I don’t this it was good value for money, I bought it as I was too lazy to cut the parts out.

Actually it’s a Jodel Wing, so dihedral at the tips. That’s where the problem is.

Thanks for all of your comments, having removed most of the covering now, I have a feeling I’ll be doing a bit
Gorilla glue, and cutting away and replacing with balsa. A couple of places are really bad and replacing seems
the easiest option.
the fuselage and tail are quite well built, but the wings are poor. Obviously the guy was not a seasoned modeller.

Hi Forum readers.
I have just bought a plane with foam wings. On further inspection (removed the covering) i have found epoxy resin was not
used to glue the leading and trailing edges on. In fact they nearly fell off, but underneath I see quite a lot of the foam has melted.
So has anyone any thoughts on how to fill these gaps and spaces. I was thinking of a light wood filler, but totally unsure.

I have already been onto the Sig site, in fact I have one stuck in the trolley. ( just can’t convince myself to hit the buy button again)
As I bought one from them about 12 years ago just as flair went under.
the shipping was bad enough, but I got hit with Vat as well. Sussex model’s couldn’t get stock back then, the same as of today, from talking to Sussex recently Sig have told them they will not sell in bulk to the UK for the foreseeable future.
what I found on building was the poor quality of wood.
I built one side of the wing from their sheeting, then the other. When I joined them one side was
a lot heavier than the other.
Also some of the wood had been crushed during shipping, and the box had been damaged. I was in contact with Sig regularly after I placed the order, and they were great. The moment I complained, it was like talking to British Gas, no body would answer me. Hence the reluctance to repeat the adventure.
But I built it, it flew OK, but after all the faffing about I didn’t love it. It went on EBay in the end, and it sold OK.
So I’m in a quandary as to the way forward on this one.

I jealous Frank, I had a lovely Flair Hog, with a Magnum .61 up front, and someone at the field said how much do you want for it, and I sold it.
Thinking of course I could always go out and buy another one. But you are happy flying what you have and before you know it Flair had gone.
I see one guy on BMFA selling one for £225, out of m bracket I’m afraid. But the .40 looked interesting, hence this forum.

I keep looking at the plan on outerzone. I have had several Hogs, but ended up selling them all, which of course was
a mistake.
just looking for someone who had built one to say how it flew and built, before I mortgage the house and buy the wood.

I had the plan and the magazine, and really fancied building the model.
So I sent off for the wood packs ( during Covid so no wood about) and I was quite happy
with it all. But and there’s always a but, with other projects on going it sat there
for ages and eventually I decided the sell it.
In my modelling life ( and normal life) I have made many mistakes, and selling the kit was one of the biggest
mistakes Possible.
It still looks inviting, well you never know, another bad winter and ……….
