  1. Its down to the individual. We have a club member who flies about 3 times a year, and then only on the club trainer. He has a loft full of extremely well built and interesting models. But most in the club have a mixed fleet of regular built and ARTF's. Cymaz, good point but it's the difference between driving and motoring I suppose. It takes all types ... Ian

  3. So I've been having a crack at the Dawn Flyer. And so far there haven't been any issues that haven't been identified by others. The rear bulkhead issue was resolved by shortening the length of the first spreader on the rear 'crutch', I've made minor mods to the wingtips, not that they were needed, and I've decided to to modify the nose a little, just to be a bit different. The fus was constructed without the front 2 formers and once the tub was finished I stood the nose in some water and pulled the sides in to about 2/3 the width of the original. I've also left the sides at the front the full width of the balsa sheet. Once dry the rubber bands were taken off to leave the new shape. Apart from being a little narrower at the nose and a little deeper construction is as per design. Here's some pics of how far I've got. Glued the firewall in place this evening and all's looking good. ian
  4. jrman, I love those old wives tales. If you don't believe me try this. In a dull light flash a small torch in one eye of a friend/partner/significant-other (with their permission and not too bright though) whilst watching the reaction of the pupil in the other. It should close rapidly. The part of the brain which controls this does the same to both eyes equally - unless there is some other issue. Bruce, I use Oakley glasses. Expensive but very good. Ian
  5. Try some of the flux sold by plumbers merchants. It works for me. A small tub isn't expensive and even though you're soldering steel, not copper, most are good for getting rid of that layer piano wire seems to get which stops solder sticking. There are several types, I'd suggest asking the man behind the counter. Ian

  7. Chris, I'd guessed this could be done with a separate telemetry unit. But with the Hitec, if all you want is LiPO volts monitoring there's nothing required, except the lead described. I'm tempted to go the full telemetry route as well, but in this case its simple. Ian
  8. Correction on OP. Its Optima receiver, not Spectra (thats the tx module!). All other info given is correct. Ian
  9. Tim. It all depends on the max input voltage of the receiver. Hitec Optima are 35v max. I suppose you could connect across, say, 5 cells and extrapolate. Using the balance socket allows that. Just make sure the 0v terminal is used. It wouldn't do to short the LiPO out with the neg on the BEC and the Receiver not being at the same voltage! Do you use another make of radio?   10. The guitar build is on hold due to a waterlogged shed (damp machine tools - dodgy) so I got on with the Dawn Flyer for the mass build. I'll be posting soon about that on another thread as it's getting near completion. But it's got me thinking about the power train. There's been much discussion re. not using too much of the capacity so I wondered if there was a way of "keeping and eye" on usage during flight. Reading the manual on Hitec Specra receivers they have a Supplementary Power Connection (SPC) which can be fed with up to 35v! (When in use the servo's are powered separately). So. 3S LiPO, Main leads powering ESC with its BEC powering the servo's. LiPO balance lead (just the 2 outer connectors used) with a lead with balance plug one end and servo plug other end. Remove jumper from receiver SBC and plug in lead. The onboard telemetry will now display the LiPO battery volts (with a bit of luck). Rather than jump in with both feet and fry a perfectly good receiver I checked with HitecRCD and they confirmed I'm ok. And it works! The Receiver Volts is displayed on-screen and I can set an alarm for low volts. Has anyone else tried this and been able to monitor LiPO voltage? Do other radio systems have a similar system? Your thoughts and observations? Ian

  13. I've just had a replacement boiler on a non-presurised system. They're regularly available and don't require removal of the loft tank for the primary side. Mine works fine and, as above, sooooo much cheaper to run. It turns out the old unit was down to about 55% where the new one is over 90% Go for Worcester Bosch.   15. Doug Ireland, the aircraft used in "Phoenix" was a Tallmantz Phoenix P-1. It was made out of bits and pieces from a few aircraft variants. The pilot Paul Mantz, died in an accident , which destroyed the aircraft, during the making of the film. Looking at the photo on WiPed it shouldn't be too difficult to make a model of it. Ian
  16. Hi TSK, Have a look here. I also have an Enya 19 VI. My father grafted an OS 20 silencer on it. It works as a silencer but he butchered the engine not the silencer. Oh well. The motor runs beautifully with a 9X4 prop. Ian
