  1. Thanks for the suggestions. I had contemplated tape, film, paint as a way of increasing diameter to fit the wing sockets. Not sure how well paint and film will adhere to ali tube. I may experiment with the epoxy resin idea as that resists fuel and is sandable to give a snug fit.

Ron - do you know of a source for hardened thin-wall ali tube in 1" diameter? Or know the correct specification number/grade for wing tube grade ali tubing?

  2. I am putting together a VQ models 80" SBD Dauntless kit.

    https://www.topmodel.fr/en/product-detail-21491-sbd-5-dauntless-30cc-2-06m-arf

IIt has a 3 piece wing with a long ali wing tube that goes right through the centre section so both tip panels plug onto it. The tips have a hatch to allow the tip panels to bolt to the centre section. The instructions suggest that the whole wing is epoxied up into a one-piece unit. I would like to keep a 3 piece wing to facilitate storage and transport.

The wing tube is quite strong enough to allow the tip panels to plug on. But...? the location tubes in the wing itself are a sloppy fit on the tube. The wing tube itself is 25mm o/d. Seems like location tubes are 1" (25.4mm) resulting in a lose fit.

So I would like to locate a 3ft length of 1" carbon fibre tube which would be a better fit. Anyone know who stocks imperial sizes?

Alternatively, a source of very thin heatshrink tube to add to the existing wing tube? Standard HK stuff is too thick.

Or another solution to the problem that doesn't involve major wing surgery?

  3. Arron, I think the Ziroli P-38 is 114" span and weighs in at around 40lbs. So it will need engines around 50cc or 3cu.in (300 size 4-stroke)

Jon - Maybe it would suit two laser 300V twin 4-strokes; what do you think?

A wee bit off thread David, Peaches are fine, but what would I give for a full English

    ernie

    Ernie,

But you can easily get bacon, eggs, tomatoes, bread, sausages, mushrooms and ketchup in the supermarket (Monoprix do good bacon as do Lidl and Intermarche) What are you waiting for - get cooking!

  5. As others have said it thermals very nicely if the weight is kept down. As mentioned earlier I changed the motor. I scrapped the ridiculously heavy Volantex motor that came fitted in the model . I substituted a Turnigy Aerodrive SK3 - 2830-920kv motor which weighs only 57g instead of the140g of the original. That sorted out the nose heavy problem. I am using the same prop that came with the model and 1000mah -1300mah cells. The model is so much lighter as a result and flys much better too with balance at the correct place

  6. David

I'm no glider expert but I do have a Phoenix 2000. Mine came fitted with servos and motor/esc. Re your questions.

    1) The standad servos supplied are plastic geared cheapo non branded but have been fine in use. So I am sureHitec ones would be fine. Don is correct - ere are 5 micro and 1 mini in the standard setup.

    2) My model uses 6 servos and just the BEC supply from the standard ESC that came with it. So doesn't "need" a UBEC

    3) Superior and more stable separate unit to supply constant voltage to the RX ( my layman's view - no doubt the more knowledgeable will have much more to say on the matter! )

    4) na

    5) Yes, sounds reasonable, but weight is an issue. . The motor that came supplied with my model was very heavy and it was impossible to get the right CG without relocating the battery right back under the wing. I threw away the supplied piece of agricultural equipment (motor) and fitted the smallest lightest and cheap motor that would do the job. I also used 1000mah lipos instead of the standard 2200. Works well for me! Others will disagree no doubt!

Have fun with it but don' t spend too much time or money to start with. Best to modify , if needed, in the light of your experience and preferences.

  7. The Musketeer is pretty smilar to Brian Peckham's Laserbeam model (RM plan) That was a tail dragger and it handled really nicely on the ground and in the air. Wheels were mounted on the wing but angled forward. Still have the plan and can check exact alignment if you like.

  8. I have found solar-lac brushed or painted to have very little protection against 10% nitro fuel. Exhaust residue soon bubbled up the orange paint on my plane. It was fully hardened and the brushed-on coats had not been thinned at all. I can only speak as I have found. I now never use solar-lac on glow models.

  9. I believe that the thread on the Saito 82 exhaust is 12mm x 1mm pitch. IIRC the Saito 125 uses 13mm x 1mm pitch on its exhaust which is only 1mm bigger diameter. Maybe there is enough metal on your Saito 82 to tap out to 13mm (as it is the same TPI as the existing damaged thread) and then use a saito 125 exhaust. (Or tap out your muffler to 13mm too and then just buy a 13mm header pipe from a Saito 125?)

I don't have a Saito 82 or Saito 125 to check with so I'm not sure how do-able it would be. Maybe Engine Doctor would know?

I have never posted on this forum before but I think what has happened over the last few days regarding Traplet plans is really bad news for our hobby, yes the average age of aeromodelers is probably mid 50,s and the average age of dedicated model builders - not ARTF or foamy planes ,but plan built projects is probably older than this, I class myself as one of these, the thrill of going through the plans lists , picking subjects to put on a list of possible projects, picking the subject that will take all winter to build, getting the bits together to turn a pile of balsa into a fair copy of the full size, and finally flying the thing, the sense of accomplishment will never be replaced , I was planning to build a Dennis Bryant Chipmunk this winter, and was planning on ordering the plans, fibre glass bits on Friday, so, I suppose I am "lucky"that it happened this week not last, i have spoke to Tony Nijhous regarding his plans and he said he stopped both Traplet and My hobby store selling his designs last year- he must have had his doubts, i thought it was funny that that Traplet were offering all round discounts on there products, but lets hope that some one or something can save them/

With the benefit of hindsight, (and of course people always say that don't they?) it is a great shame that My Hobby Store relinquished ownership of all the RCM&E/Nexus/MAP etc plans to Traplet only a few weeks ago. So now we have lost availability of almost all the UK model plans at one fell swoop. If MHS had kept control of their plans/parts we would still have a great number of great plans available to us. As others have commented, hopefully from the ashes someone can resurrect the plans business.

The upside is that I may be more inclined to get on with building some of the models for which I already have the plans!

  11. According to Danny Fenton in his Hawker Fury thread Traplet are in trouble. He wrote earlier. ..

"I am not sure of all the facts but I heard that Traplet went into receivership this morning, so where that leaves us with regard the plans and parts we have ordered I do not know. I have not received any of my order yet.

As soon as i hear more I will let you know. It is shocking news, the modelling mag industry is having a hrad time indeed, but I didn't realise Traplet were so vulnerable.

    Cheers

    Danny"

    Hi all

I thought that this might be of interest. It shows a magazine article from 197? by Dennis Bryant in which he shows how he make struts for biplanes. The magazine cover featured Dennis Bristol Bulldog. The metal panelling was kitchen foil attached with double side tape.

    Cheers John.

    John,

It may just be my computer, but there is no article or link I can see with your post.

Pleased to hear you got it sorted OK.

The UniSens is a useful little gadget isn't it. I also have the 280 amp version, and that works OK as well - in my case it is with Jeti telemetry.

    Dick

Yes, its very compact and so much cheaper and more convenient than using multiple discrete sensor units. And.... it supports multiple radio protocols too! A very handy gadget and I'm surprised you don't see more of them about. I suppose lack of English instructions and software must limit its uptake in the UK.

  14. Martin, here's a thought. US president Donald Trump claims most news is "Fake News". He's also well in with the Russians according to some reports. I would think he would be just the person to investigate the moon landing conspiracy!wink
