The canopy get form: It is the first time I make a canopy so big and complicated. Next will be to put som more framing in that is found on the fullsize: For the few foto's I have it lookes like the inside of the cockpit on the fullsize is light grey, so I was thinking of spraying the whole area with a grey primer. After that paint the the dashboard black. Mount the plastic after covering. Would this be a good sequence? By the way, does man only srew the plastic or is canopy glue used in addition? Regards, Lucas

Cockpit frame next. I laminate them from 1 x 1.5mm balsa with 0.4mm ply at the top: I laminate them on a piece of tape so the can be sanded square before gluing in place.

A little further tonight: I intend to laminate the wooden ridges straight onto the wing 4 laminations of 1.5 mm balsa and one thin ply should keep the cockpit in place I hope. I will try to make an opening cockpit as per the original. The long term plan is to be able to change the pilot for a small camera to do some FPV flying. Cheers, Lucas

Hi Ian, Elegant. Do you remove them for transport, or do they stay on the wing? I was thinking of using hinges, as Peter has done, so they can fold flat on the wing (which then can go in its protective bag for transport).

You are lucky in the UK with "local" companies that stock building supplies. Not so here in Norway and ordering small amount from the UK is expensive (posting, customs fees etc.)

That would be a possibility. I decide to have one of these printed for me by a friend: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:3576380. He has a 3D printer but not enough to print so is always happy to get some files in the mail.

I was given a big box with balsa (both flakes and lists) and some metal profiles. Among with 1,5 m of 1/2'' Al streamlined profile. Which now has been converted to 4 struts.

I was given som profiled aluminium profile of the right dimensions. Filled the ends with thickened epoxy and hope that will be enough hold for the M2 threaded rod and the hinge. Canopy is next. Half a mm. clear plastic sheet it says in the article. But where does one find that? Regards, Lucas ps. I am also looking for Canopy locks (for the battery hatch). Neither Hobby King, Banggood or my local suppliers have any in stock. Can I make it myself?

Completed the sides. And yes, I did think of removing the screws holding the cowling backplate in place. Until the hole in the front is enlarged the cowling cannot slide upwards. Next is making the big hole in the front, glueing some triangle stock on the inside corners and shaping the thing. Cheers, Lucas

Started on the cowling. From the few pictures I have from the Rans I am trying to make a lookalike of it seem the cowling is more square. That makes things easier. The hole in the cowling looks slightly bigger than the spinner. I first make a "front plate" with a hole in it that centers it on the motor and fixed that to the spinner backplate. Then the top can glues in place: Next is the bottom. If I have though everything through correctly I can then still loosen the screws that hold the cowling backplate. Fix the backplate with tape top and bottom and glue in the sides. Mark the hole around the spinner an and after removing the spinner backplate the cowling-to-be can the be slided off the motor. I will tell you if I have overseen anything..... Lucas.

the wing is finished, ailerons are made. Time to continue with the fuselage: Planking the bottom. Aft the formers are close enough that I can get the seams on the formers. Further to the front there is more then 100mm between them, so I glue the sheet together first. Cheers, Lucas

Indeed it does. I find build up wing construction pleasing to look at and to work with. Foam wings are not the same. By the way, do you know how many Rans S-9 have been build after the plan was published?

Autumn wheather today, so quite a bit of progress! I always let the spars extend over the last ribs top reinforce the tip. This give quite a bit of strenght for no weight. The supports for a the aileron servo's are done..... twice. I manage to mount one side to rib bays more to the center, even though I had taped the location.... I like rib capping! The center sheeting is glued together and can be put on the wing tomorrow. The weather will be miserable, so plenty of workshop time! Cheers, Lucas

Glued the winghalfs together. They fit well: Top sheeting on the port wing tomorrow (try not to forget the brace along the leading edge, although there will not be much wood left when the hole for the dowel has been drilled). Cheers, Lucas

Rich, about half a meter needed to sail. And no seagrass or other stuff that can tangle the keel or rudder. Total height about 1,4 meter. Other information you can find on https://www.joysway-hobby.com/big-fast-racing-rc-sailing-boat-for-adults-dragon-force-65-p00032p1.html. And now back to the topic of the thread!

It is a Dragon Force 65. 65cm long and the rig is not more than a meter heigh. The sailing club here standarizes on this type since they are not expensive and sail well. It is a big class in the UK too, with National Champignonships and quite a few clubs having an active group of sailors.
