  1. Yes it really is that popular and the price for what amounts to one of the most powerfull txs available is a real game changer. People who have used Frsky have reported a rock solid link, ive been using a Frsky mod on my mpx 3030 and its as good as my mlink stuff without a doubt. I bought into spektrum when it first came out and had dreadful trouble with it so was very reluctant to try another cheap system but it bears no relation to it.The only drawback I can see is that it requires a reasonable amount of study to learn to program it. Thats the only reason I have not been rrecomending to beginners. Really high end sets are starting to appear s/h because Taranis are making them redundant. Roger
  2. I too think that the video from the AMA is very good. I beleive it the AMA also have a magazine like the BMFA so its a nother positive way the AMA interacts with its members. Its a add on not instead of. I also like the way that the AMA has created a Parkflyer class of membership and is also encouraging Parkfly clubs. It indicates a great willingness to embrace new ideas and include anyone who flys model aeroplanes. Bandit please do continue to post positive posts about FPV, ive yet to see FPV in the flesh although I am sure there must be individuals in Cornwall flying it, I think they have gone a bit "undergound" because of the adverse reactions.I reckon an FPV slope soarer would be awesome around the coast of cornwall and when funds allow it is definatly something I will try. The only slight criticism I can make of it is the undercarriage can be a bit weak. The best cure I've seen is dowels through the fus and elastic band the undercarriage on. Roger Really! you think someone who has taken their 'A' & 'B' cert on a foamy is ok to fly a 100" aerobatic model in front of a crowd. Or am i missing something, is there a foame 'B'? Edited By Rick Tee on 02/11/2013 07:30:59 Yes your missing the point of the A and B acheivement scheme entirely! As long as the model weighs over 1kg and is airworthy then i dont care if someone takes the test with a paper aeroplane, dressed in a pink tutu with a dafodil up his derriere! More to the point any examiner who try's to impose any restrictions above and beyond the BMFA instructions has no right to and should be removed as an examiner. I neither know nor care wether the candidate is capable of flying a 100" aerobatic model in front of a crowd. That is beyond my remit as an examiner (ex examiner now as i fly in a non affiliated club). The responsability for who flies what, where is most importantly and legally THE RESPONSABILITY OF THE PILOT. Roger

  5. Patmc, it appears to me that whether its MANY, a TINY MINORITY or just the one FPV brave enough to stick his head above the parapit by continuing with disparaging remarks such as whinge etc, you have moved the debate away from what should be the focus, the safe and INCLUSIVE use of FPV in a manner exceptable to ALL. So perhaps you could explain why you feel the need to use derogatory terms, Is it to register your outrage? Because I am at a loss to understand how disparaging remarks will help the discussion in anyway. Roger Edited By Bearair on 02/11/2013 06:13:26

    Dirty Birdy

Thanks, Martin and BEB for the reassurance I am going to give it ago. My experience of Rossi's is that they run great flat out or at ideal its just the bit in the middle they are not so clever at typical italian engines in my experience (Laverda's more than anything). Its also the way I used to see aerobatics flown at the time the Birdy was competitive. Roger
  7. Posted by PatMc on 01/11/2013 19:05:53: The BMFA has always embraced new technologies in model flying whenever they've appeared. They keep the membership informed via the BMFA News that's sent to every member which is something a video message only viewable via the internet doesn't do. The fact that many in the FPV community have a collective chip on their shoulders is their problem not the BMFAs. Actually IF the FPV community have a collective chip on their shoulder, and I think that's a very big IF then it is everybody's problem including the BMFA. A disgruntled rebellious minority could cause a lot of trouble for the rest of us. How we handle them depends on your point of view. You could just attack them verbally whenever they post a video or dare to have a different point of view, use derogatory terms, say they all have a chip on their shoulder etc, etc,! or you could try to interact through sensible respectful dialogue, even biting your tongue occasionally. Having lived as part of a similar group in this country then I can tell you the later might work, but the former will just promote a greater go forth and multiply reaction. Roger

    Dirty Birdy

Thanks all my issue is that the model has the bulkhead glassed in so I dont wont to move it. I have 3 7/8" space to work with. So Iif I use a modern 60 it will not fit, hence im hoping this Rossi which has never run will give enough power. From the web I know it will turn a 11/5 at 16000rpm opinions gratefully acepted.

    Dirty Birdy

Hi Martin, Not sure what it will do not run it yet. Going by the forties ive had im expecting to need to rev it to get top performance. A forty works best with a 9 6 so not sure if a 12 8 will be to big for the 53. If anyone has expeirence of this motor it would be very usefull.

Been running Rossi 40s for many a long year, but the 53 will be new to me and so will a pipe!

    Dirty Birdy

Hi A few years ago I bought a Dirty Birdy for renovation. It is 60inch span with a glass fiber fus. I think it may be from the Svenson kit but im not really sure. I was thinking of using a Rossi 53 with tuned pipe for power. Weight is 4.5lbs without engine, tank or radio. What are peoples thoughts on the Rossi as a engine for it or can someone suggest a more "authentic" engine. Will post some pictures later. Roger
  12. With the Wot 4 I would agree with Nigel, if you want to slow it up for landing the best way is to learn to land using elevator to control speed and the throttle height. To do this you need to fly the model at an angle just below the stall. With the aircraft in this attitude the the model should be sinking at ideal. By opening and closing the throttle you should be able to adjust the models accent or decent. This takes practice and should be attempted at least one mistake high to start with. With the asw there things worth learning about, such as altering the camber to increase lift or increase speed (A very over simplified explanation.) Learnig it now will stand you in good stead if you wish to progress to more sophisticated gliders in the future. Spending time in front of a computer and learning what the functions can do, and how your controls effect you can be very rewarding if you want to learn to get the most from your model and gear. Having said that just flying and enjoying it is never wasted the more you fly then the better you become. Trying to find the right balance for you is the trick! Roger
  13. On the asw aws you have the elevator compensation the wrong way around. When the spolerons go up the elevator needs to go up. Try setting the elevator comp at about 15% of total elevator movement to begin with. On the wot 4 you have to much elevator compensation but it is the correct way around. Again I would start with about 15% of total elevator movement. Always test at height as im sure you already know. Out of interest what are you trying to achieve? Is it to slow the model up for landing?
  14. It was a smashing day for sloping here in Cornwall, wind was gusting to over 60mph on the cliffs at St Agnes. Got a couple of flights in before I cracked the tail on landing. Should be repaired for tomorrow though. The spray from the sea was hitting me even 250ft up! Personally I love this weather, best time in Cornwall when the north coast is at its rugged best. But it will be a frightening time for some and I will be very worried about my mates in the lifeboats and those who have to be out in it. Heres hoping everyone has a safe night. Roger
  15. Well all I can say is guilty as charged, didn't see the thread. I started modelling very young myself and it was because of the great encouragement I received from the older modellers I have had such a great hobby for life. From my interest in building radio gear I became a electronics engineer and was lucky enough to have a very successful career. So I owe a lot to aeromodelling. I will look for future threads by your son with interest. Ps, ignore the jibes about your hair, there just jealous because there getting old and bald!
  16. Sorry, dont understand your post. Did the young man make a post and not get much response? Roger
  17. I reckon she might pre date the Dara. I was suprised by the undercarraige being in the kit, but the fus is so wide there was plenty of room for a rudder servo so it has a steerable tail wheel aswell, luxury!
  18. Really looking forward to it, joined a local club and sorted a new battery for the flight box. Flew a bit of Club 2000 a few years ago but my health was deteriorating at the time, so had to give it up. Hope my reactions are still up to it!
  19. I have been flying gliders now for the past 3 years, before that i was pretty much all electric for 4 or 5 years, so the last ic model I built was a Sig Kobra. Anyway a few months ago I was attempting a clear up when I came across a Irvine 25 with prop still attached. I gave it a few flick's and there was just something about feeling the compression and the noise as the carb sucks in air. i wanted to fly power again and it was going to have to be ic!. A couple of weeks later I spotted a very old Club 20 design on E-Bay. I had never heard of this model but I had had a lovely Olympic Sportsman years ago. So i put on a bid and won it for less than thirty quid. nice kit, but the veneer had lifted on the wings so that was re-stuck. A few weeks of gentle building has got her ready for covering. So with a bit of luck she will be flying next week. Roger
  20. Although i'm ic/dc I have been known to dabble in rubber.............. The only really successful ic ducted fan I ever owned used a cox 0.49 td, and was in a Heinkel He 126, simply could not afford the hi spec engines for larger ducted fans. I agree this is one area where electric has left ic dead in the water. But I do love the sound of a real gas turbine.
  21. It was a group of silly old men who wanted to fly electric on a National Trust site, they were used to getting their way by bullying people with sacastic comments and veiled threats. Personally I think their threats of shooting me down and how they had done it to others was just more rubbish BUT I was flying F3F gliders and 4m scale ships so I was not prepared to put others lives at risk. Ironically they went to the BMFA saying I had bullied them, but that did not work either, and the last time I saw them I was no longer the target of their abuse but their old club chairman had taken my spot!
