Well, I started my first build on the day that my number 1 son was born. I'm advised that it was probably a DB Mascot, but of course I couldn't fly.
In an attempt to clear out my garage I was planning to put it in a skip, but Number 1 son stopped me and said, I want to see that fly one day.So many years later, having got myself an 'A cert', I converted it to electric and with a pit crew of my flying buddies from Corfu, we took this 29 year old plane for it's maiden flight. It performed perfectly.

Like many others I never met BEB, but always enjoyed his postings and his clear understanding, plus his articles in RCM and E. I have learnt so much from reading his work.

Hi, hope nobody minds if I add a post in response to the original question 'is there a problem with the DX6?'
I bought a DX6 some time last year, G2 6700 (so single antenna version). Then reading about potential problems, I was reluctant to trust it with my main fixed wing models, so it became the 'sim' transmitter'. A bit of a waste really.
Then this year I noticed that HH re-launched the Champ, an old favourite of mine, but this time with lots of new features including gyros, GPS, and failsafe features like 'holding pattern' 'geo fencing' and 'auto landing'. So I thought, this is the ideal plane to give me confidence in my DX6.
Took it out yesterday, ground checks, range checks all fine. Take off was fine, once above about 20 feet the DX6 had no control whatsoever. The Champ went into its holding pattern, flying circles over my head. None of the Tx buttons or functions seemed to have any effect; most significantly I could not reduce the throttle. The Champ eventually 'auto landed'.
Today, I re-bound the Champ to my main flying transmitter (DX7s), went back to the same flying area and it behaved impeccably; smooth flying in circles, figure of 8's, well over 10 minutes of flying and 3 interim landings.
Conclusive - probably not.
Would I ever trust the DX6 - definitely not.
What can I do with it? probably take it to the local tip. Pity really, it's so smart in its black and red livery

Having read the article by Dave Phipps in the BMFA News regarding EASA Prototype Rules for Unmanned Aircraft, and the impact of this possible legislation, I can't help thinking that it's so incongruous to get a promo from Hobby King announcing their Quanum Follow Me Drone.
Anyone else have a view?

Yes, but you need to cut one of the red wires. George at 4-Max has a detailed set of instructions.

Guys, I've got rid of my DX6i and thrown the manual away, but I used the timer all the time and I'm sure the setting was not "Throttle Cut" but "Throttle Out" and you can set it to 10% 25% etc. That's also how my current Spectrum transmitters work.
So the timer does start when you put "some" power on.

Julian, I think what you get in Intermediate mode is not exactly self levelling, but a restricted roll.
So with full aileron, once the model reaches a certain degree of roll, the ailerons will flip back to neutral (or maybe even a little bit beyond).
I don't have the apprentice but I have a couple of smaller ones with the same technology

Martyn, you need 5030 and 5030r as a pair.
Don't know about HK, but I get these, 3 packs at a time, about 2 days delivery.other than props, nothing else seems to break (or should I not have said that!!!)

Its stability on landing would be much improved by having a wider base I think, maybe a sort of "spider" type thing bolted onto the bottom.
My experimentation with this was to use an old 'training gear' from a heli.
It does help (me at least), but you still need to come in slowly and level otherwise the 'bounce' will get you.

It's not easy, this.
Well rightly or wrongly I finally decided to blame the KK2.1.5 for randomly dumping me upside down onto the grass, so it's trashed.
The MultiWii arrived yesterday so I have a lot of catching up to do. So far it's looking good.
It's probably down largely to BEB's configuration guides, but it already flies much better (less wobbly, less "bouncing"
I've actually strapped a helicopter training kit under it, which saves a few props on landing - except when I forgot, about switching flight modes and flew it in manual!
So, 'not easy' but progress. Might even bring this version to the park BEB for a proper pilot to test it.

Unfortunately it's 2 steps back at my end.
Hovering quite nicely with only a slight wobble, wind dropped so take it up to about 8 feet (still below the neighbours fence
) and suddenly one or more motors stop, the thing flips over and hits the grass.Since the weight is in the base (battery), It couldn't flip over if all motors had stopped at the same time, so one or more must have stopped first, but the experience was that all motors had stopped. Maybe the Controller shut down the others.
Faulty motors? my soldering? faulty Controller?
Going to have to take the props off and mock up a simulator for this (i.e. me jumping in the air and throwing the thing around).
I'll let you know if I make any progress.

It looks like this is too late to help Nev, but there is another issue with installing drivers:-
"Microsoft doesn't allow you to install drivers which are not 'digitally signed' directly (or easily) on later versions of windows (7 and 8). To get around this you must temporarily disable the signature verification process."How? depends on you Windows version.
I hit this problem trying to install USBasp drivers on Windows 8.1,
(Couldn't get hold of a Micro-Wii, so I needed this to update the firmware on my KK2.1.5)
Currently waiting for replacement propellers

I took 2 models to Corfu with Easyjet last summer packed in a 'golf bag'.
LiPo's were carried in hand luggage in a 'safe' bag, didn't even get a second glance.

Just connected the watt meter to my Fun Cub setup described above.
with a 3s 2200mah battery at 88% of charge:
Max was 160 watts drawing about 16 amps.
probably a bit low for a 2 1/2 lb model.
maybe some 'Sparky' can confirm that is about the right 'milarky'.

Trebor, I got the 'factory built' Receiver Ready version over a year ago.
As I recall, it came with the C3516-0840 motor (840 Kv) and a 13x4 prop.
ESC is Multiplex 30A. I use the same 3s 2200mah batteries that I use in my Wot4 Foam-E.
I haven't used a Watt meter on it, or if I did I didn't make a note of the numbers.
As John Lee says - this setup works fine and it's one of my my favourite planes.

Mind you, I've always thought it would be safer to walk across the tarmac rather than squash into those buses. ahah
