  1. View from underneath. I fitted a piece of ply to fix the wing retaining bolt to and also two bearers for the elevator and rudder servos.
  2. My motor will fit behind the firewall rather than be mounted from the rear like the plan. There is no down or side thrust shown on the plan so I have kept it the same. My construction method is different for the front end, which on the plan just shows a circular ring of ply which you somehow have to carve/sand balsa to get a circular front end. I have made a square piece of ply and will glue my top and bottom balsa sheeting to that and shape it after the glue has set. I also put some triangular fillets inside to strengthen the nose.
  3. Forgot to post this picture of the maiden of my Sabre - in the sunny autumn of 2020. Its only flight so far as I took it out a couple of times before the lock down but it was never windy enough. That's the plane's designer helping out with an excellent throw. I have since modified the elevator to give it more throw, mine was lacking in the up department. That's all it needed though. Flew on rails and the flaps are really effective - so effective that when I deployed them it just landed! I will know to feed them in next time. There is a minute of video here too - its a bit of a dot as it was from a phone and sorry about the wind noise, I think it was about 40kn. 237405113_Sabremaiden.mov
  4. Forgot to post my completed pictures of this plane after I flew it before Christmas on a rather cold and snowy hilltop. It flew pretty good even though it was quite a low and day - about 11kn. The balance was ok and the flaps work very well - landing was easy just behind the launch site even though it was still on the slope. I have since added more markings to make it easier to see. Lots more black on the wing and some fuselage stripes so I can see that - it kind of disappeared being all white (I should have guessed). Cant wait to get out again - hopefully next month.
  5. Next afternoon it was building the fuselage. I used cyan for the first two formers and then alphatic for the rest putting in some aplhatic webs alongside the cyano joints. Whilst that was setting I pinned the cut ribs together and sanded them so they were all a pretty close match. Thats as far as I have got so from now on post will be as the build progresses.
  6. I did notice a few mistakes in the plan - e.g. there is no allowance in the wing rib layout for the 1.6mm balsa covering on the leading edge. The built model differs quite a bit from the plan as well - maybe because builder and designer were on different continents! I also extended the plan for the wing, which actually could have been fitted onto the sheet if they had arranged it better. I don't know why there isn't a fuselage plan but I think I can do without. These issues are only minor though. My motor has a front mounting rather than a rear one so I omitted F2 and changed the design of F1. First job in the actual build was making my own 'kit' tracing off the components from the plan and cutting them to shape. This took only a few hours.
  7. As there doesn't seem to be much on this RCME free plan project I thought I might cover it here. I was looking for a smallish aerobatic model that would fit in the boot of my MX5, using the motor/esc etc from my very old and very well flown HK Kinetic which I retired as it was starting to become more glue than foam. This seemed a pretty little plane that would fit the big, and with the slightly more powerful motor from the Kinetic be quite interesting to fly. I will be making a few modifications to the design to suit my own needs but also because I think they might work a bit better. I will note these as I go along.
  8. Gary - that worked. I switched the channels around and it worked first time. Thanks
  9. Hi Gary The rx in this plane is a ‘brick’ with combined servos so this does not apply. It has just three channels so I assigned 1, 2, 3, and 2 and 3 are working - Rudder on 1 not working...
  10. I have been doing ok with setting up my models using OpenTX but have come across a brick wall with one of them - need some help. Its an indoor Flyzone SE5a which uses a Tactic receiver I believe. I have bound it using SLT V1 6 Channel protocol (it is only 3 channel but thats the lowest one available). The throttle and elevator work ok but no response on the rudder no matter what I do. The only switch I have set is on the throttle cut which is working fine. Tried rebinding it and its still the same. I used the same set-up for another indoor 3 channel (which is DSM) - no problem with that one. Any ideas for troubleshooting this?
  11. Thanks for all for advice and getting involved. I have moved a bit further myself by experimentation. I found I could update the Bootloader from within the TX so that seems OK. I have now added two planes to the TX using different older DSM2 receivers. I added curve (expo) travel within Companion too. I also found out how to do range checks today and found that the range seemed to exceed what I was getting with the old Spektrum DSM2 TX - great! I am not sure how to change the timer from countdown to count up (for gliders) and start it from a switch but Im working on it. Tim - thats good advice about adding and removing files from the SD card. It just sits on my desktop when I connect the TX and its how I updated the firmware so I should eb able to do the same on the Mac. I will try an image next time and see if that works. Gary - I will recalibrate them again now as per your advice. I must say so far I am liking OpenTX and my Radiomaster a lot so far...
  12. Hi Gary Thanks for getting in touch. So here goes... The OpenTX Companion software works fine and it is connecting with my TX (Radiomaster TX16S) without a problem. I did however have a problem updating the firmware. It was not possible within OpenTX Companion. I kept getting various messages that meant it wouldn't play ball. However, I found a work around. I copied the up-to-date firmware to the SD card (along with the up-to-date SD card data) and than installed it from that using the screen below. Two questions - on the screen it now shows the correct firmware on the bottom line but the old firmware on the top one 'OpenTX Bootloader' - does this matter? Also, despite the (Windows) advice sites saying once the new firmware was installed I would need to re-calibrate the controls the TX never asked me to do that.
  13. Hello moderators, I wonder if its time to update some of the headings for the different forum topics? I have one suggestion - in radio it lists FrSky. It might be better to rename this topic OpenTX as this can be used by other brands like Jumper, Radiomaster, HobbyKing as well as FrSky. Just a suggestion...
  14. I have recently started using OpenTX using a Radiomaster TX16S. My computer platform is MacOS and searching around the net I can find very little (i.e.virtually nothing) on the peculiarities of using OpenTX with this system, everything is focused on Windows with an occasional mention of other platforms limited to something like 'or do whatever MacOS/Linux requires'. Is it worth having a thread that can help out users with problems? Although much is the same I have had some issues with finding out how to update firmware for instance. What do people think?
  15. Hi Chris - I think they were before the cut-off date but no worries they weren't crucial.
  16. Hi - some of our posts went missing on this topic with the site refresh. Anyway, I have moved on a bit and have a couple of more questions that the experts out there might be gracious enough to help me with. First - this is just a general question about the throttle movement. On my TX screen it shows the throttle moving between -100% and +100%. This is much more than on the Spektrum system - is this normal? Does to make any difference? The throttle seems to work ok on the plane I have bound to. Second and more important - I am using OpenTX using MacOS. The software works fine and it is connecting with my TX without a problem. I did however have a problem updating the firmware. It was not possible within OpenTX Companion. I kept getting various messages that meant it wouldn't play ball. However, I found a work around. I copied the up-to-date firmware to the SD card (with the up-to-date SD card data) and than installed it from that using the screen below. Two questions - on the screen it now shows the correct firmware on the bottom line but the old firmware on the top one 'OpenTX Bootloader' - does this matter? Also, despite advice sites saying once the new firmware was installed I would need to re-calibrate the controls the TX never asked me to do that. Finally - is there anyone out there with experience of using OpenTX on a mac? All the info I have found is for Windows systems.
  17. Just checked an ongoing thread and the posts from the last two weeks are missing - pity as I had some information in there I wanted to recheck?
  18. My Radiomaster has arrived. First impressions are its quite chunky and solid. A bit larger than the Spektrum DX6, certainly in its depth. The gimbal arms are a bit shorter than I'm used to but screw in an out for adjustment. The tx is heavier than I am used to as well, especially because I bought the recommended 5000mAh 2S Lipo as they were out of L-ion batteries which I suspect would have been quite a bit lighter. I like a ratchet on my throttle so I hope I can add that option as its currently just a smooth throw (anyone know if this is possible?). The sliders on the corners don't have much of a centre but they feel solid. The screen is excellent. The rest of the switches are solid. You have to press and hold the main nav switches until they operate which I guess is a safety feature. See the cute key-ring! HobbyRC also put a boiled sweet in the box to add to my pleasure... I will be learning a lot more about the OpenTX system before I actually plug it into my computer. Edited By robk on 26/01/2021 11:52:55 Edited By robk on 26/01/2021 11:53:12

  21. Thanks to MattyB for posting that link. I have viewed quite a few videos by Painless360 and his are great for conveying simply how to do things in OpenTX we all take for granted with Spektrum et al. I was sold on multi-protocol because (a) it seems far more flexible (b) when you are increasing the number of channels you need it gets much cheaper for receivers etc. (c) you can buy add-on kit such as a variometer much cheaper (£15 for FrSky compared to £79 for Spektrum) (d) I can use my existing receivers (e) no limit on the number of models. My kit is arriving tomorrow - good price from HobbyRC here in the UK. I will let you know how I get on.
  22. Thanks again Matt - I have now ordered a Radiomaster TX16S, and FrSky 8XR and a FrSky variometer to play with. I have a few spare Spektrum receivers I can work with too. Something to do in lockdown...
  23. Thanks everyone - thats very useful information and so quick too. MattyB, thats a great analysis of the options. I have now had a look at the Radiomaster and that seems a good option with good reviews, sliders and touch screen coming soon. Two questions though... What receivers would you uses with that? Also, I have seen you can get a TBS crossfire version and there are receivers with that name. What doe this mean?
  24. Hi Everyone I have been playing with OpenTX on my computer think I can get along with it (using Spektrum currently) and now want to buy some hardware. I believe that all the transmitters use the same software and features, but what other kit should I buy to get started? I am planning to buy two receivers and use one in a full house glider and the other in a power aircraft - one 8 channel and one 6 channel should do it. Also, should I buy one of the cheaper transmitters or go for something a bit more expensive? I would like to try a tray type transmitter eventually but I understand the current FrSky model is out of date so I am happy to go with a normal one for now. Any advice welcome.
  25. Here it is finished but not yet flown due to Covid restrictions. I have set up control surface throws as per the instructions. I have a good forty degrees of flap with some compensation on the elevator. CoG is set at 90mm behind the trailing edge. It weighs 1.46kg including battery but without ballast. I might add some colour on the top wing and fuselage after I fly it if I find I am losing sight of it. Its a pretty plane.
