  1. Anyone still looking for a Flair SE5a kit..... Balsa Cabin had one on their stall at the Nationals this weekend. Don't think it sold. So if you can't get one from elsewhere, touch base with Balsa Cabin.
  2. Whilst viewing a few You tube videos of Flair models flying, I came across one of the Bristol Fighter and got side tracked. Looks a beautiful kit too..... but I guess its out of production??? Anyone know if its still available? I know.....finish this one first but always nice to have next project in mind!!!
  3. Thanks Rob, Off on Sqn detachment so not had time to do anything to the model for last week. Have just bought a large board though. So I can start on the wings next week. Will be really interested to see your report on the performance of the OS 52 when you eventually get it airborne.
  4. Early stage of tail skid design. Brass or aluminium cross bar for the springs. They will attach to bracket at top of skid (eventually) rather than to tube drilled through skid. At lower end will be a brass bracket with centre pin, drilled though brass tail post. The brass pull-pull end is simply there right now as template to experiment with geometry. I knew there would be a use for the discarded rear fuselage frame!!
  5. I think the weight addition of adding the 3 stringers should be negligible, especially as the scale profile used less of the ply sheet. Just need to convince myself now that the sprung tail skid is also weightless!
  6. Rear decking applied. took several attempts to get it positioned absolutely right. Leave overnight for the wood glue to harden properly.
  7. I liked the quote I saw beneath someone's signature block last night on another forum. Quote:.....'It ain't broke until you can't fix it any more!'
  8. Braddock, An '80' up front??! i bet it climbed vertically with that and performed prop hangs like a 3D machine. Not exactly scale but it would bring a smile to your face!!
  9. Better photo of the stringers positioning.
  10. Here is the rear fuselage from above with 3mm x 6mm stringers added. Outer ones are flush with fuselage top and will give 1/32 ply rear decking a base to key on to.
  11. Hi Jon, Many thanks for the info. Never too late! As lots of people have built using '70' size engines, I am going to wait until as late as possible when I can assess its weight almost complete to see how it compares - especially as I intend adding a few scale details. But with an OS 52 sat begging to be used, I am sorely tempted.
  12. I don't want to 'over-engineer' the skid in order to minimise the additional weight. I guess it may need an extra couple of coats of fuel proofer at the front end to counterbalance ------ ever the eternal optimist!
  13. And I think I have a solution to the sprung tail skid. Just have to fettle the joint at the tail post. The springs chosen are almost scale size, appear to give the rigidity required and looks like mimicking the full size with springs set at a toe out angle will add to the self centring of the skid if there is any sideways load on landing..... I can't ever imagine such an inaccurate landing myself (), but you have to cater for all eventualities!!
  14. I think I may add 6mm x 6mm stringers to align with the edge in order to give the ply edge something to glue against, just as in the non-scale version the ply would be glued against the longerons. Will cut ply first and see how structurally firm it is without the edge stringers.
  15. Re-worked the rear turtle deck to reflect the scale outline of the real aircraft rather than the compound curve of the kit issue parts. Cardboard template of scale profile made before cutting the thin ply (expensive stuff if I make a mistake!). Will cut the ply tomorrow!
