  1. Hi all, does anyone else on here join in with the fantasyleague formula 1?

Its open now and my teams in. I'm aiming to win this year. I got as high as 7th last season before my transfers ran out. I finished 110th. Not bad for over 7700 entrants (even though I say it myself). UMM

  2. I have a VQ Hurricane, just needs noseweight for balance which I will add today hopefuly. But it won't get a maiden until I'm really sure I can be in with a chance, could be agesfrown (see VQ Hurricane build)

I also have a Mresserschmitt 110 with twin SC52s but alas I still think thats a very long time away. (see 71" messerschmitt)

I also have the Dick Dastardly but have recently placed its engine back in my trainer as I need more stick time. (see Dick Dastardly)

Riverlandgirl Wow, I love some of the designs that you come up with your latest is fantastic well done

    UMM

  3. Hi Duncan, sorry mines a Kyosho and I think its about 120mm narower than the VQ and CoG is 85mm back from the leading edge on mine. Maybe you can search on the forum and use the Cog finder thats mentioned in 1 or 2 of the threads. Good luck Umm

Hey Derek, congrats with the baby any news on that yet as its been some days since I was last on this thread? I suppose you'll be really busy once he/she arrives. Good luck UMM

  4. Bill Working on a Mustang now, pics soon

Ruprect I believe the spinner was black and green with a gun in the centre. Unfortunately with my special technique to landing it would just keep filling with mud/soil etc. Ha ha, maybe one day!

BBC Nice, cheers for that. Here is what I managed..... Please note that this is a zoomed in image I just took from the above picture.

  5. Colin I'm not sure when I am going to fly this thing as I have to save up to buy the lead needed to balance it, (ha ha,) but when it goes up I'll be posting the result on here however it comes down.

Ace The paint work is all fuel proof paint and was just painted over the original. When it starts to wear off as it does in places you can see the original covering beneath which just adds to the battered appearance of a warbird, well in my opinion anyway. Oh and just in case anyone is wondering the retracts are electric and have a built in safety so if they get stuck in any position, ie a wheel binding in the well, the power just cuts to the retract in question until you flick the switch again. No more messing with fiddly retract servos and very scale up/down movement.

BBC I get a bit like that after I strip all the necessary covering of something that has nothing wrong with it, but once I am finished its well worth it. I have just finished my first wing on my VQ Mustang. I am changing it from a full length strip aileron to a scale size aileron and working flaps. I will be photographing the second wing as I go along. First wing looks well even though I say so myself.

  6. Having just posted a picture on the VQ Hurricane build of the"shelf mates" i realised that I would have to create a new thread so the 109 didn't hi jack the thread.

Here it is just after I bought and painted it.

and here it is these days

    I've built my own exhausts

    added guns

added a metal looking rivet detailed cockpit canopy

rounded off the originally flat underside of the fuselage

given an aerofoil section to the originally flat tailfin and stab

totally rearranged the wheel wells and put the wheels in a more original position

added an ariel (not in the pic)

added a more scale (ish) rear tail wheel (instead of a wire)

added machine gun bulges under the wings

    added radiators under the wings

and chopped the wings to add working flaps.

I then painted it in the Adolf Galland paint scheme with 2 hand drawn "Mickey Mouse images"

So not much of the original left......

    UMM

Edited to make the image clickable for folk to see it bigger

  7. Well the Hurricane has now got a run-in SC 70 and has had the necessary holes cut into the cowl to allow the needle adjustment allen key to protrude and idle adjustment should it need it.

I scowered all the internet for information about this plane when it came to COG as i thought crushing a small family saloon and cramming it in the nose cowl was a little exceassive, 500g, yes thats 500g of lead to balance this beast at 85mm from the L/E. (dont fancy that much!)

Then whilst looking for this info I read about people who had this plane and wrote it off on the first flight......Ooooooohhhh I fancy that even less. I love building 'em, and I'm not the best pilot so its looking like quite a few more flights with the Me 109 to "get my hand back in" then when the confidence level reaches normal I'll give it a bash, er actually I'll give it a flight and try not to bash it.

Heres a pic of the "shelf mates"

The Me 109 was a Kyosho but is now more like my own design as I have......

mmmm better start a new thread for that........ "UMMs 109"

  8. Hi all, again,

Steve....... when you wrote.. "Short answer is NO don't start drilling holes....if you did you'd have to seal it up when the engine is running or the engine would stop....there would be a massive air leak into the inlet manifold via the crankcase......IMHO your options are....."

Well on the SC52 there is a nipple on the underside of the crank case and its open all the time, I just connected a length of tubing to it and squirt after run oil down after every flight. Thats why I asked about fitting one to the SC 70.

The only reason I ask is because my SC 52 never misses a beat and I assumed that this may be due to the care i give it. I just wanted to do the same for my SC70. Unfortunately it is burried beneath a cowl and difficult to give an after run injection. I have heard so much about the fuel rotting the bearings and just wanted that peace of mind.

But as was mentioned in the thread, if it was designed like that well just leave it I suppose!

  9. Hi Myron, for me I build, repair, modify and create something for my planes every day for at least 1 hour. I imagine I do a 20 or 25hours doing this to 1hour flying. Its my favourite part of this hobby.

I actually managed to get my first flight of the year today. My Messerschmitt 109 has been overhauled and today was its maiden, well since the overhaul. I havent flown it for well over a year and the nerves were kicking in. The new engine obviously hadnt enough running time and cut out on the landing approach just above the ground. As I tried to land the wheels dug in and over it went. result, only two bent legs, obviously my retract securing blocks were spot on. half an hour in the workshop and its ready to go again when the weather allows.

I wrote in the 2013 goals thread by Cymax that I was going to get more flying in this year and improve my landings, well today was the first step in that direction. UMM

  10. So does all that mean I can drill a hole in the crank for a nipple to add afterrun oil to the bairings or not?

Or does it not need any because its dry sump?

It just got a bit much at one point but thanks anyway for all your ideas and suggestions.

  11. Wow seems we all like to do lots of other stuff. I like Myrons joke about medical grounds.... ha ha nice

At the moment I'm building a VQ Mustang to follow the VQ Hurricane I did recently, I am finishing off restoration in my house in France which involves plumbing woodworking tiling,oh and I love cooking. I cook almost every day. I like languages, i speak English, Dutch, and now reasonable French. I used to do a bit of drawing and still ocasionally like to draw the birds that come in our garden. I also built and electric childs jeep and then went on to design and build an electric Fab one. There is so many things that I want to build, and not just planes, batmobile for example is on my to build list. Oh and I make all the stuff for my models, stands flight box (with wheels drawers etc) I'm sure ther is more, Oh did I mention restoring old corgi toys..........I never have enough time and with reitrement a few years away......Got to go, I'm busy........ UMM

Its not a lubrication nipple UMM its a breather All these years in and I'm still learning. Thanks for that Steve.

Johnny, yes see what you mean, just noticed its the underside thats drilled and got the nipple on my 52 not the backplate.

I'll have a look at this tee fitting as the sc 70 does have a pipe (but no slippers, sorry couldn't resist!)

Myron, skippy, thanks (i think) I'll have to read those posts again when I've had less to drin..... er when i'm less tired.

  13. Hi Steve, welcome to the forum, your in the right place for good advice. I'm sure there are lots of better informed people on here than me but just a quick question, is the Aurora 9,7 on 72mhz? because I don't believe thats an aircraft frequency unless your able to use it on 2.4 g

As for the first aircraft, well there are lots of ARTF trainers but if you MUST fly for the first time without any instruction from people at a club then I suggest you try some sort of simulator at least.

There are so many things that a newbie can think are good only to find out that they werent quite as good as first thought after speaking to someone who has already made all the mistakes.

Its a great hobby but it only takes a couple of crashes to put people off. Have a go on a sim, go to the nearest club and have a chat with like minded people, have a couple of lessons, (covered by insurance) and then if need be you are at least a little prepared for that first solo flight.

Good luck... it really is a great hobby, don tget put off.... UMM

  14. Anyone noticed that with the SC 52 fs there is a lubrication nipple but with the SC 70 there isn't. I always lube my 52 after a run but cant with the 70. Well I actually put a bit down the exhaust but it doesn't seem right after the other has a special nipple just for oil.

If I drilled a crank backplate and placed my own lubrication nipple would this be derogatory in any way, or is it best to just leave it as it was designed like that?

Do the other SC engine sizes have lubrication nipples? please let me know.

    Opinions please...... UMM

  15. Thanks for all the comments it really is inspiring and IT WILL FLY how do I know......WELL..... an interesting development in the saga of DD&M........

TODAY I went to the club with DD&M and the new wheel to stop noseovers.

I lined it up and opened the throttle. My intention was to let it run until I had the speed to ease it into the air but Dastardly must have seen YD pigeon right above him and in true cartoon style he ran along the ground for about 5 metres and decided to go almost vertical... HOORAY it left the ground of his own accord.............BOO there isn't enough power to fly almost vertical and thus resulted in a stall, a wing drop and a truly scale landing according to if you ever saw the cartoon......Smash!

What happened really. It ran, The tail lifted and it sat on the mains plus the new skid wheel. It ran level for a short distance and then dived upwards about 3 or 4 metres and stalled by dropping its left wing. There wasn't enough speed to allow use of any of the controls and so it came back with a bang.

Damage report.... Vertical and both horizontal stabilisers completely snapped off. Wing bolt retaining nuts gave way which at least saved the wings (which came off) the main spar in the fin cracked and the covering had a few holes here and there. Also DD&M jumped free of the wreckage, but a bit of glue and they're back in

Repair report...... So far I have completely repaired the tail and repaired the wing retaining nuts. Just got to do a little re covering in the morning and its back to how it was, Oh I strengthened the tail where it snapped off.

What did I learn?..... well even after what happened I am actually more confident that it will fly. For starters it took off. Its obviously still far to tail heavy even though I thought it was ok. I am going to try again but next time I'm going to adjust the elevator to push the nose down when the sticks are centred. (advice and ideas on that appreciated) Then maybe itll be up to me when it leaves the ground.

All in all I imagined I was going to have days like this but it makes me even more determined to fly it now. UMM

  16. Pete Miller..... Here here!

Myron...... Health and safety and the PC Squad are all in it together, I heard about a woman who got done because she kept getting her house broken into by burglers who climbed over her back yard wall and she put broken glass on the wall. If they get cut because they tried to climb over her wall to burgle her house then hard luck to them, they shouldn't be there in the first place.........OOPS I almost went off on one.

La la la..... I had a lovely day today fiddling in my garage with my planes........Until I caught my arm on a long screw on the door on the way out ha ha ha...... UMM

  17. Wow I love the variety of this hobby.

Concorde speedbird...... Yes your right I love model engines I get a great buzz when they start for the first time and then as they run in and I fine tune them its a good feeling. I suppose thats why I prefer nitro to electric, the fiddling and satisfaction of getting the setup just right.

Hogster...... I still get nervous before flights but the more I fly a certain plane the less the nerves. Then i get a new plane and back come the nerves. One of my goals in the 2013 thread was to fly more and thus reduce nerves, so I'm just finishing my Hurricane and finishing a revamp on my BF109.

Captain slog....... if your ever unloading a bag of warbird bits then let me know

Del Wheatley..... Ha ha ha ha ha ha.....love it, engine in the kitchen, I'm not even going to tell my missus what you do in case I get in trouble for associating with you ha ha ha. keep it up UMM

Tony Bennett.... Thats OK if you have friends!........Have you been spying on me?

  18. Hi Riverlandgirl. I tried a hand launch when it was electric powered but due to it being underpowered it just didn't want to know. I haven't tried since the glow motor has been fitted. My reason for this is my train of thought is "if it leaves the ground after a run then its flying and will probably continue to fly" whereas if it leaves from my hand it may just be the last thing it ever does. I'm just a big scaredy.

The skid i fitted today will in effect allow the aircraft to lift its tail to the same angle that it will fly at before the wheel on the skid touches the ground. My theory being it stops the nose going to far down and the aircraft should then pick up some ground speed. Once it has enough ground speed i should just be able to pull back on the elevator and send it skywards.......All theory mind!

(did you mean AOA before? most of my aircraft are AOG ha ha) I think that keeping the wing at positive AOA will cause it to lift prematurely without the speed required to give control with those tiny ailerons. Again its all theory. As long as I try instead of just worrying i'll smash it up. Its been waiting to long now. ITS TIME!

  19. After reading Cymaz's flying goals for 2013 I realised that we all thoroughly enjoy our hobby but at the same time we all enjoy different aspects of it.

I am having a fantastic aero modeling 2013 so far even though I have only been to my club twice and havent yet managed to fly.

How is that possible I hear some of you scream?

Well for me the two trips to the club were 1) a test attempt to find out the next problem in the Dick Dastardly saga, and 2) A failed attempt at flying my Messerschmitt 109. which I have flown more than 70 times before but the last time was over 12 months ago and has since been fitted with flaps, and a larger engine, oh and I moved the wheels into a more scale like position which unfortunately was not quite far enough forward with the new engine to balance it enough for take off. hence a few days re modding the UC. Love it!

So what do I love so much about this hobby. I love going into my garage and building, modifying adjusting my planes to get a reasonable scale like appearance. I am in no way the same league as the "real" scale builders but just love the fiddling.

I hate having a plane that has flown and can't fly now for some reason. I have to repair it and make it slightly better than it was by giving it a little mod of some sort. Aerial, radiator, flaps etc....

Just last year I had the misfortune of crashing my trainer into a tree. The wing was smashed the fuselage damaged and the prop broken, THEN it fell from the tree....A club member looked at me and said "BIN?".... no way, home repaired it in the evening, covered it the morning and flew it again the same day. (the day after the crash)

I have a mate that has spent loads on planes and engines and has never flown, he just loves owning and talking about them, his catchphrase is "its a bit weathery to fly today"

So Whats YOUR favourite bit, it doesn't have to be as long winded as mine. UMM

  20. Tim, funny you should say that I have just reappeared from my man cave after fitting a sort of skid but with a wheel attached. I made it so that the tail can come up to where the angle of attack is at zero degrees. I dont like the idea much but if it stops the nose over and allows a build up of speed I dont see why it shouldn't leave the ground.

    Notice I didn't say fly.

Pros and cons of this model

    Pros

It has a lot of weight below the main wing causing it to have a pendulum effect keeping it balanced.

It has a large dihedral (see above)

it has a lot of wing area for a small plane

    Cons

It has batwing trailing edge ailerons

The trailing edges vary in thickness depending on where abouts on the arc you measure.

The tail fin is batwing style and points forwards

the main body has more aerofoil section underneath than on top (sort of like an upside down wing) Although this may not come into play as the fuselage is round and not flat like a wing?

I built this aircraft from my own drawing without reading up anything about model building techniques.

the horizontal and vertical stabiliser have a small amount of roll due to being fixed to a rear fuselage that is pointed like a bee sting.

Its piloted by Dastardly and Muttley and has me at the transmitter. (Mmmm so does that mean that a crash would be perfectly scale just like every episode on the telly?)

Weather permitting looks like tomorrow will be fly or die day, or at very least discovery of a new problem. UMM

I thought I would do the Turbulent as preparation for a Brian Taylor Hurricane build next year so if I can crack this then I should be ok on the Hurri?

    Terry

Hi Terry I've just been looking at your build and from what I can see you are a very good, I doubt you will find a problem that you couldn't solve with the BT Hurricane.

Get a post on the thread about what is your goal for 2013 and put down the Hurricane. I'll be watching. Oh and well done looks great looking forward to seeing the finished photos. UMM
