    Using ca

Hi, I’m attempting the 72” Mosquito by Tony Nijhuis and thought I would try using thin CA. Nothing unusual in that I hear you say, true but I’ve mainly used Aliphatic resin up ‘til now. So will CA be enough on its own or should I go over the joints again with the Aliphatic for greater strength? Thanks, any advice will be appreciated
  3. Many thanks John, will probably have a go at this for my latest build, the TN 72" Mossie.
  4. Can someone please advise on how to do this, I’ve not done it before. Thanks in advance TH
  5. Thanks Everyone who replied to my enquiry. Engine Doctor and PDT, you've got me thinking about tissue and dope again. Thank you Don, haven't heard of Ceconite before, what is it, where can you buy it please ?
  6. Hi EarlyBird, Model is 92" span - thanks for your interest. Hi John, very useful info, will definitely follow this up at a later date when model is finished. Hmm. Many thanks.
  7. Hi All, Has anybody any suggestions about covering my Fieseler Storch 156, from a plan by Dennis Bryant / Model World. I was thinking of completing the tailplanes in 0.8 balsa but don't have any idea what else to use on the Fus and Wings. (Having got back into building fairly recently, the last thing I covered was using tissue and dope so ignorance reigns with respect to what modern stuff is available for this). Any help gratefully considered. Many thanks in advance Tony.
  8. Hi All, Trying to avoid going stir crazy, I'm thinking of setting a flap / down elevator mix on my, as yet unflown, Carbon Z Cessna. Has anyone any advice on this, is it necessary, if so what % to set and how will affect performance on take off. Thanks in advance, Regards, TH Edited By TH on 02/04/2020 12:04:50

    Changes

Hi All, I'm just assembling my second Wot Trainer after the unfortunate demise of no.1 when the ground broke its' fall, both models being electric. Has anybody experienced problems with the nose wheel assembly and the motor stand-offs, whereby the lower stand-offs foul on the nose wheel brackets to the extent the they cannot be secured to the bulkhead. There is also a change in position of the nose wheel operating pushrod, it now exits the bulkhead on the left hand side (when viewed from the front), and this also fouls on the standoff pillar to the extent that it is rendered inoperative. If anybody has any suggestions to overcome these problems it would be very much appreciated. Many thanks in advance to all who reply.
  10. Hi All, I'm thinking of buying a 12v battery for on field charging, anyone got any suggestions on best price, best supplier etc. Thanks in advance, Tony
  11. Hi Guys, I have to correct my latest bonding error, no, not my wife. Does anybody know a way to break a joint bonded with aliphatic please ? Thanks in advance. Tony
  12. Thanks Percy, you're certainly right about the amount of detail on the plan. What I'm finding most confusing is the lack of build instructions, I'm finding I have to think about two steps ahead to make sure I don't do the wrong thing, which believe it or not has already happened more than once. Also, thanks for the info re Old Warden.
  13. Hi All, Has anybody out there ever built the Dennis Bryant plan version of the 93" Fieseler Storch from Sarik Hobbies? If so would appreciate a general chat about the build. Cheers in advance. Tony.

    Laminating

Many thanks to all who replied offering advice. Thanks, Dennis, so that's why I experienced some delaminating, I didn't know about the releasant on ply. I'm going to try 'Titebond Extend Wood Glue' - after lightly sanding the ply - see if that's successful.

    Laminating

Hi Everyone, Can anyone help ? I need to laminate 1.5mm ply sheet onto 3mm balsa to form part of the fuselage of my Fieseler Storch. What would be the best adhesive to use to avoid warping. Thanks in advance for any suggestions Cheers Tony Hobson

    throttle lock

Just like to say thanks to everybody who tried to help. Dennis, tried your suggested link but no joy so I emailed Spektrum direct and I've just received a reply telling me that it's not possible to do this on the dx6i as it has a 'throttle cut' button. So, having snatched defeat from the jaws of victory I set it up on my di7 instead. Cheers
  17. Hi guys, does anyone know if it's possible to program a Spectrum dx6i transmitter to have a throttle lock on the 'flap' switch please. A clubmate has set this up for me on my dx7, using the 'Mix 1' function and the 'gear' switch, but despite following the instruction manual and trying to copy the settings on the 7 I can't get it to work. I'd appreciate being 'talked' through the procedure. Thanks in advance, Tony.
  18. Thanks very much Dennis, I've sent an email and will wait and see if they can help. Much appreciated Tony.
  19. Hi Guys, can anyone help. I'm thinking of finishing off this model which I started to build about 20 years ago, but checking it out revealed that the front canopy was badly cracked in multiple places, although still all in one piece. Checking on the Top Flite website shows that they no longer have any spares for these models. Does anybody know where I could get a replacement or, alternatively, know of a vacuum forming company that would be prepared to manufacture a one-off replacement at a reasonable price. Cheers, Thanks in advance, Tony Hobson
  20. Hi All, Has anyone out there ever electrified a Maule ? I have a 74" Skyrocket which got shelved about 10 years ago. I recently got back into the hobby and thought this would make a good project. If anyone's ever done this I'd appreciate any know how available. Thanks in advance, Cheers, Tony Hobson

    covering

Hi Chris, That's interesting.I bought this one from SMC and I'm certainly not going to buy another Pichler kit, very disappointed with both the quality of the kit and the level of instruction provided, I understand these kits originally come from China. Please explain your abbreviations, BMK and Banggood, I guess these are websites ? The prices look good. Cheers, Tony.

    covering

Thanks to all of you who replied to the query about covering. I had another look at the Solarfilm video today, thanks Peter, already got it but forgot about it until you reminded me. Some very useful stuff on basic techniques for us beginners / dinosaurs. Another question though, my instructions/manual (laughable, who writes these things, they've never actually built anything, sorry foaming at the mouth here after another evening of trying to relate instructions to reality,) is a little economical with the instruction bit, and as far as I can see there are no specifics about holding the wings onto the fus. Yes, its got the usual CF rods but no actual physical means of preventing the wings pulling off in flight. Are the rigging wires really intended to provide this function, or are they just for show?

    covering

Hi Everyone, I'm nearly ready to start covering my Sopwith Camel (by Pichler) and have just realised that I don't know what I'm doing. I remember many years ago covering models with tissue and liberal applications of dope and emerging from the man cave in a decidedly happy frame of mind. But now it's all different and i've not used Solarfilm etc before. If anyone can help with a query about covering this type of model I'd appreciate it. My query is this - how do I achieve a good finish around the area of the cabana struts, should I cover first and then insert the struts, in which case how do I gain access to fix the struts to the wing ribs without messing up the covering. Or ..... ? Thanks in advance to anybody who can help with this
  24. Hi Guys, I've got a query - what's the best thing to use to glue carbon fibre to balsa ? Should I use CA, if so what grade or would aliphatic resin work ok ? Appreciate the help, Cheers, Tony.
  25. Hi Everybody, my name's Tony and I'm an old newb who has recently returned to the hobby after a layoff of several years. I'm currently building a Sopwith Camel kit by Pichler, has anybody else had any experience of building this kit ? It may be that the old brain cells have recently retired but I've had several problems with this kit regarding parts missing, incorrectly cut parts, lack of clear instructions, basically, is it just me or have standards slipped since my younger days. Any comments/help greatly appreciated. Cheers guys.
