  1. Very kind. This particular engine I didn't make but typical of mine. The carriages are incorrect for the engine which were scratch built from 1840 drawings in brass, to go with a correct period engine. Just hooked up together for a quick steam up.

So given that background is anyone interested in my experience of construction of the DH2 over on the scale section?

  2. Mark,

    It's a MicroAces kit.

Quite a novel construction method, a combination of flat foam components, covered in fine pre printed stickers, pre printed foam sheet, carbon fibre, and thread.

Happy to posy some live steam pictures but might be more appropriate elsewhere

  3. Flew a trusted park flyer that I'd had for about 7 years, straight into some branches. That'll teach me dusk and loss of perspective.

Repairable with replacement wings, but she was getting tired.

In stock at Sussex Model Centre

Ordered online about 9pm Monday evening, order confirmed and shipped next day.

    Received this morning (Wednesday).

Excellent as ever. It was really in stock: None of this 'we have to ship from supplier stock in 3 to 4 days'

Hello Robin, Bob, yes, it is a President, DR 500/200i to give it its full title. There is a long story behind it which I will summarise as briefly as I can. I learned to fly in the 1970s and joined a group flying a Robin DR315, the first nose wheel Robin. It was effectively a DR220 Dauphin with tri-gear. Absolutely gorgeous little aeroplane, only had a 120 horse Lycoming 0-235 and 4 seats but really a 2+2, not a mean bone in its body. Solo with half tanks it was great fun. I started an own design model but life got in the way and it sat neglected until the lockdown. In the early 2000s came the opportunity to share a 500 with another chap from the 315 group and I have been flying “MAGZ” since, 700 odd hours on the 315 and 400 and something on GZ and you could say that I’m something of a Robin fan. She has a 200hp Lycoming 0-360 with a constant speed propellor and is a very capable aeroplane. Part of the reason the model stalled (not in the aeronautical sense) was the canopy, over 2feet long but I decided to carve it out of pink foam and paint the glazing. The airframes are very similar but MAGZ has wing tanks and a very different engine cowling. It is about 80 inch span, between 1/5 and 1/4 scale, electric with 6s and a 60mm dia motor. The spats, which are quite distinctive, were a pain but unavoidable. I’m really pleased with the finished article (and will be more so if it flys!!). A couple more pictures attached.

    Thanks for you interest,

Well, that's 3 of us Robin aficionados of Avions Pierre Robin.

Indeed first tried one in the 90's, then joined a group with 2, an HR200 and an ATL, and flown a few R2112 and DR400's too

Once you've tried one, you're smitten. Excellent visibility in all variants.

No wonder they're the most popular light aircraft in Europe, well certainly France

Going flying tomorrow, first time this year. Had cataract surgery to both eyes, left in January and t’other a couple of weeks ago and the results are truly amazing. So got to try them out tomorrow and then screw up the courage to maiden the fruits of my lockdown labours.......

Very Nice DR400. Is it a Precedent?

Well, here's my latest effort. I blame the lockdown for it!

I've always had a fascination for pre WW1 aircraft, so I thought I'd combine bits from various aircraft of the era (a sort of aeronautical Frankenstein).

It spans 36" and weighs 42oz ready to fly. I've used traditional construction for the airframe.  It's covered with tissue over Doculam, using Wilco satin water based varnish, an idea I got from PatMc. I'll perhaps leave it until I've got my thumbs and brain back in sync again before I try it when we're allowed to play again though...

Like yourself, I like pioneering aircraft. I'm just in the throws of constructing a Microaces Airco DH2, but yours lloks more sturdy for ordinary conditions.

I'll be pleased to hear how the test flight goes, and interested in something similar if you could share.

  7. I have a Durafly Stuka, where the motor has shorted internally (and blown the ESC , but that's by-the-by)

Bought secondhand but never flown, good job.

Seems to have been the stock motor in most 1100mm Durafly's. Now defunct.

How likely is it that I can source a form fit function replacement for the motor. I'm not familiar with terminology, but I think that the 3536 is motor can dimensions.

    It's here (discontinued):-

Brushless Outrunner 3536 850Kv With Propeller Adapter (hobbyking.com)

Listed as 5mm shaft with prop adapter (which I've measured to be 5.8mm dia and fits the scale spinner) which also has a hex base.

Would i find a stock 3536 motore with the same spacing holes for the prop adapter and rear mounting plate?

  8. I'm more than grateful John.

I've joined the INAV group, already familiar with Ardupilot, watched hours of Andrew Neall and followed through with painless360 as a cross check.

The original Nano Talon wasn't very good quality, but looks as though the Evo has fixed those issues.

It's small enough to chuck on the passenger seat of the Spyder, and easily into the somewhat limited interior of an otherwise massive Maserati otherwise I would have gone with your suggestions of the glider like things that you recommended.

And looks an easier (safer) launch than the AR wing, and has a wide speed envelope, and plenty space to put the pitot in the nose, compass away from interference, and enough space for VTX for OSD, small FPV camera and a Lollypop antenna out of the way.

Also has a reinforced skid underneath which I can beef up for concrete landings.

    Very many thanks again

  9. My goodness, thank you John.

I was on the point of committing to the AR wing when I logged onto RC Groups.

The manner of launch looks horrible, and although I was going to implement the INav 'launch' mode, it would need experimentation and tuning.

And, and this is a big AND.

It looks as though most of the wings fly hot.

    Now, in perspective.

I do fly fixed wing, have done for decades. My current hack is a Pitts S2a with AS3X (Thank goodness).

I do have a Stuka waiting to be test crashed, and a Muliplex FunMan which is utilitarian and doesn't handle very well, together with about a dozen indoor fixed wing and micro heli's.

I could probably handle the AR wing, with stabilisation switched on, but that is not the point.

Most of the examples that I've seen have a stall speed of at least 30 mph. The Piper Warrier that I fly full size has a stall speed not much more than that (around 55 pushing it ideal), and the Robin R2112 even less.

    These must be flying bricks.

Not what I want at all. So thank you for warning me. In order to experiment with patterns that I want, most would be in circuit join, downwind or approach configuration speeds. These wouldn't even understand that.

It looks as though I'm going to have a serious think.

I would prefer something as you suggest. Bixler However, I suspect that it's flight envelope is good because of the low wing loading, and I'll take a look at it's assembly, but that wingspan is big, and the space and fitment seems cramped.

I'd prefer a pusher, as I wish to fit the pitot in the nose, or somewhere on the fuselage.

I have briefly looked at some of the twin boom models and this, the ZOHD Drift:-

I presume that the smaller ZOD Dart is even more of a bullet.

Difficult when shops aren't around. I've certainly wandered around the INAV fixed wing group.

    Some quiet thought me thinks.

If you have any more suggestions as to airfames, that would be really helpful

  10. I'm new to drones, but not RC.

    I'm considering the following setup.

The aim is to explore 'autonomous' flight but within line of sight and primary control manually, exploring replicating correct circuit join, approach and finals.

FPV isn't desired, but merely a means to view OSD of key parameters and observe behaviour.

As such I don't think I need a powerful long range.

I've followed Painless360 and found it helpful

I shall use my Spektrum satellite rxers.

So I'd like to setup around the AR wing 900 (larger wing, lower wing loading - I'm not interested in fast racing)

I'm trying to keep costs reasonable. Even so we're breaking £230 ish

Does this seem a reasonable setup?

Am I cutting cost too much?

Is the GPS accuracy sufficient, or should I invest more (desired 50cm CEP)?

Any advice for someone coming new to fixed wing very welcome.

    Robin

Is the Beitian GPS accurate enough?

  11. I wonder if I could ask for some advice.

I've been intrigued by fixed wing autopilots/stabilizers for a while after using the EagleTree AS3x variants in most of my fixed wings models.

I've discovered Painless360 on youtube and found it enormously helpful.

My interest is not in FPV, but line of sight, employing fencing, stabilisation RTH, but more experimenting with flight planning. emulating proper circuit join, approach and landing (we'll see).

It's an experiment, with a view to enhancing some traditional aircraft if satisfactory.

As an experimental set up I think that I'm settled on:-

SonicModell AR wing 900 PNP, perhaps the 600 if it's not too small, employing 3S 2200mAH LiPo

Matek 765 wing if it has built in OSD

My Rx is a Spektum satellite rx

Middle of the road GPS, Video TX, and camera.

For OSD I think I've seen a RX with plug into Phone and phone mount on radio, but I'll take advice

As to whether INav or Arduplane is more suitable, I'd like to experiment.

    Does this sound viable?

    Have I missed something?

and most importantly, where does one source these compnents.

The SonicModell AR 600/900 doesn't seem to be available from any UK supplier, only from Bangood which fills me with dread from others experience.

Can anyone suggest where I might source these items from a reliable UK store please?

and do put me right if I've made some mistakes above

    Thanks

    Robin
