DH Venom style, cut off the tail, twin booms and an EDF behind
Now that would be something, and very pretty! Ducting the airflow for edf would be the difficult bit. You'd want it in the middle to look right? You build one ? 😉

After 12 under my belt I'm trying to figure out my next #Lidl project. Help! 😟

Mine all come from my daughter-in-law, in worrying quantities but at least its not tobacco. And at least I know where they've been 🙂
I've given buckets of them away at the Ponty club but I've still a stash of fifty or so and yesterday she presented me with another carrier bag full, some with charge ports.
Most of my PP3-powered test gear now has a 2S home-made PP3, used them in loads of projects, bicycle light pack etc - but theres a limit to how many you can use so I still have mountains of the things. The recent ones are nice little 300mA oblong lipos ideal for a Lidl glider or mpx Fox. The 18650-sized ones you can adapt to use in a torch. My SAS Wildthing has ex-Vape 18650s in the nose, two in parallel for the weight. You cant post lipo cells now but I could take some to the next big meeting - OW? anything but throwing them away!
Cheers
Phil
Most of mine have come from a woman I know who gets through loads of the 'one use' vapes and she saves them for me. The batteries are usually the cylindrical 360mA type but I've also found the oblong flat ones and bigger ones. I've been considering using a pair in parallel for slightly bigger motors too as the C rate doesn't appear to be very high.
but theres a limit to how many you can use,
yup it's such a waste that they are being binned all over the planet.

I must be odd because I've never seen any discarded vape batteries. I don't walk in cities (or even towns) very much but my wife and I sometimes litter pick on our local strolls.
I don't see many but according to reports I've seen on tv they are becoming an environmental blight.
Should disposable vapes be banned?BBC

Brilliant, just love your experiments and "make and mend" attitude.
We have our very own Jack Hargreaves on the forum!
Looking fwd to seeing that jet fly.
The joy of retirement (if there's such a thing) coupled with a lack of flying weather! 😒
But yes, the foamie jet has been interesting, especially making a cavity inside to get rx, battery and esc in. I'm just waiting on the servos, but then I'll be waiting on the weather for a maiden! 🥴
Model shop sold it to me for a fiver, but I see they're more like a tenner online. Build blog will happen sometime too.

I posted a video a short while back about vape batteries and their usefulness for small RC models. I picked this up in the street the other day and it's even better. It has it's own charger!Just saying, keep your eyes open, there's some useful stuff lying about!

Probably a topic on its own, but quite a few people I know and myself included set up a rate switch (either individually or Elevator & Ailerons) on a switch (3 position).
50% 75% and recommended throws that way if you get something that's super lively and a flick of a switch you can reduce the control surface throws
PS There is an unwanted effect of using low throws via the TX and not mechanically adjusting and that is the control surface becomes more notchy in its travel, so post maiden review how much travel you really want/need and set it up mechanically correct with 100% travel in the TX
Hi Chris, thanks and yes, I always set up dual rates on both ailerons and elevator, regular and 'sport' mode. Shop bought kits, and even the Flight Test foamie builds usually advise what the throws should be in degs, but with an experimental own design you have no idea until you fly it how it will respond to inputs. Too little and you may not even have enough control. I like to have a good throw on elevator to start to be sure I can get off the ground! This was very responsive hence I could reduce throws a lot after first test which was a bit scary! After I reduced it was a joy to fly, easy but still very quick and manouverable! I'm dead chuffed with it.

Finally after all the problems and frustrations I had with this build, including the train wreck maiden, I enjoy a blisteringly good 2nd 'maiden'! 2nd test after I'd trimmed was amazing. Quick, stable and very maneuverable.,I'd say this is the best of all my 9 Lidl RC conversions. Motors, props and other details are in the build blogs and in video description.

In the section of the video where investigate the CG position, you talk about plank and swept flying wings interchangeably. They are aerodynamically very different, so I wouldn't put much weight behind the calculation from the swept flying wing calculator. This may be of interest, though there is quite a lot of maths involved!
https://www.mh-aerotools.de/airfoils/flywing1.htm
What you have there is very definitely a plank - there is almost no sweep at the mean chord point, and based on your build video you did not put any twist into the tips. Based on that you should probably seek to stabilise it with a more forward CG and reflex (assuming you are not using the elevator any more - I could not tell whether your flight videos were with or without that operating, sorry). Even then, I suggest you investigate whether you have some wash-in that was introduced by the "cut and shut" when you removed the dihedral during the build.
Very interesting article you linked, thanks. Reflex was mentioned by the guy I met at the strip. Definitely a combination of factors were preventing a successful flight for that creation. It's all a good learning process!

Thought this might appeal to you.
Thunderbob.
The original plan was for a 70cm Depron model.
I turned it into a 1100mm span Foamboard cartoon scale job, three sheets of board = £15.00.
Interesting laminated three piece wing, resulting in a wing "section".
AUW LB4.
Nice one Simon, thanks. Any pics of your creation?
PS I love foamboard! Cheap building fun.

Well done Bonzo.......always enjoy your stories!
Thanks mate. I found it quite interesting and maybe useful to share my learning experience!

My Lidl Stumpy RC conversion had yet another redesign after a few too many fails. Here's the story and why it has gone to the great RC plane graveyard in the sky.

My Lidl fusi foamboard Vulcan had another test flight. It flies well but really needed a motor upgrade. Watch this space, a new test will be coming soon with bigger motor fitted!

Hi bonzo,
Interesting. May I ask please, what prop, motor and speed controller are you using ?
3c 300 battery ?
Thanks.
Also, have you tried any of the 4 max economy flight pack bundles, prop, motor, ESC, 3 servos etc. £25 ?
Hi again, build blog is here ...
props changed since that of course, and speed controllers!

Hi Rich,
I think I mentioned it in my build blogs, but motors are D1806 2280KV 2-3S Brushless Motor CW CCW which is the same as BR1806.
these were £13.43 the pair from Ali Express. I think they are cheap Chinese copies of BR1806.
props are Gemfan CW CCW 5" 5045 5x4.5 fitted counter rotating of course,
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/192629894865?var=492770721681
Speed controllers Simonk 12A from AliExpress, £12 the pair. But they took 26 days to arrive in UK! It said 12 days guaranteed delivery!
Lipo is 800mA 3s Zop Power. More than enough power here with a 3s, I think this would fly with a 2s, but still have to try another maiden as the first was a disaster!
Don't know the 4 max economy packs, sorry.

After a disastrous maiden, I got a lucky break and discovered why my twin motor , twin fusi latest RC build had such a huge difference in thrust between the two brushless motors. You never stop learning in this hobby!

@Bonzo Moon, rather than creating a new thread every time you post a video to your channel, why not post to a dedicated bobflyman video thread a bit like Essential RC does?
This would keep all your content in one place and make it easier for those of us who use the "Latest posts" view as our default. Just a thought.
It's an idea, but my videos have varied content, Lidl chuck glider conversions, foam board builds, flight tests and problems I've had with a build where I wanted feedback. If it was all in one video thread people might miss something they might have appreciated? If it's in latest posts it's just as easy to pass by and not click on it, or alternatively you might be grabbed by the title and decide you do want to see it?

Here's how you can make an RC battery for free.
Obviously test them first and use the same capacity batteries.

Nevertheless, well done for grabbing a bargain.
It will probably be okay for indoor flying.
Wow, every weather site I go on to see whether it's going to be flyable I get Temu ads thrusting stuff at me, other people I know in the RC hobby have the same. It was one of my mates with an RC modelling building YouTube channel got one cheap first, which prompted me to try it.
You have to be a new user to their app to get the deal and order through that. It worked for me.
Ideas for my next foamie build please?
