Custom RC Folding Prop Adapter for Brushless Motor in 1 Hour!
Bonzo Moon replied to Bonzo Moon's topic in Hints and Tips
Thanks , but it looks to me they are nearly all designed to go on to a motor with a shaft. And are not suitable for the short threaded shaft on a brushless motor, which was the problem I wanted to solve. I Googled folding props for brushless motors and didn't come up with any answers! The one in the picture attached is similar to the one I modified though I reckon you'd still need to file it down (and 3 times the price of the Ali Express ones! ) -
I came up with a fix for putting a folding propeller on a brushless motor and can now put a folding prop on my Lidl Big Bird RC conversion! Better for soaring, and better video when a small camera is mounted on the plane. This should work on brushless motors with a bigger shaft too by drilling out the centre with a bigger drill before filing it down.

Can an RC plane be jinxed? More fun and games with my twin fuselage Lidl RC build last week. Only just survived this one, but at least I got some onboard pilots' view video of the action! It all comes down to differential thrust mixing on two motors and some conflicting advice I've seen online, but I'm hopeful I've sorted it now! Watch this space for the next episode ๐คจ

I get a SURPRISE when I test my old Wot 4 lipo batteries!
Bonzo Moon replied to Bonzo Moon's topic in All Things Model Flying
Doesn't really seem to work that way? There's a noticeable reduction in thrust as a battery capacity level starts to deplete. IC has full power until the tank runs dry. And yes, that was my first attempt at at an IC to leccy conversion, half power is more than enough as I found out when I tested with a fully charged 3,500 mA yesterday! -
Decided it was about time my old Wot 4, one I converted from IC to leccy 12 years ago, got some air over the wings so I got it out, checked it over and decided to check the state of a couple of 3 or 4 year old 3,500 mA 4s lipos. They were only at half charge but thought a run up would let me see if they still had any life in them. Came up with a test idea and it scared the life out me when I remembered just what a spicy conversion I'd made. And the keyboard warriors told me it'd never fly with my motor and prop combi. ๐ It's got a 12 x 8 on but the motor will take 14 inch. ๐. And that test was a half charged battery! I didn't risk a full charge run up indoors! Some nice aerial video at the end shot from the plane a few years ago.

I've been watching quite a few videos on inav and it looks interesting and if Iose FPV signal and lose the plot it'd be nice to be able to flick a switch and have it go around in circles above the airfield or return to home. As I said in my video I did 'lose' sight of a drone once flying it and RTH was very helpful!

I wish I could tell you! That was last Friday. BUT in the West country in September we've had the equivalent of a months worth of rain in just the first few days of the month. Cloud base's of 600 - 700 ft, which is the height ASL at my flying site AND if not that, strong wind. Today 32 mph gusts and rain. VERY FRUSTRATING! I am brave enough, but want a day where my 250g plane isn't going to blown away. ๐ค Friday is looking a bit hopeful, though TBH I would like a bit of sunshine to get some good video and a good screen view of the airfield! Saturday looking even better, but who knows, it'll happen when it happens and unless it's a half decent day there isn't going to be anyone up at my strip to ask to be a spotter! ๐. I am investigating inav and autonomous flight so that I can flick a switch and get the plane to fly round in circles overhead.

A fairly short and hopefully useful video I've put together sharing some of the things I've learned after 20 Lidl Glider RC conversions over the last 4 years. Methods, techniques and advice based on a some of the questions I've seen on forums and groups over the last couple of years. Comments and questions welcome.

My smallest ever Lidl build, the 15 inch wing span Micro - Mini , 56g AUW, had it's maiden yesterday. How did it go? ๐ This is my 20th Lidl build, 14 big ones and 5 mini builds, and now the micro mini, and it's a darling! Part one and two are mini build blog and parts list in the video description. Also maidened my no. 14 big Lidl. It was OK, but needs the right prop for a proper test. The Royal Mail managed to lose the props I ordered. ๐คฌ

A while back I saw on an RC group some asking if anybody has converted the really small, 15 inch wing span cheapie Lidl glider into an RC plane? The Micro Lidl glider. Someone replied that it would be a challenge. I've built 14 of the big ones and 5 of the mini Lidl's but I had one of the micro's kicking around at home and decided to give it a go. How did I get on? Plus a top tip when rc plane building. ๐

OK folks, I'm now well on the way with my no.14 Lidl RC glider conversion. Been through singles, twins, biplanes, edf's, etc. you name it, I've done it, let alone also 5 mini Lidl's! (Build blogs on my channel.) Different idea for this one and it's an almost 'pure' Lidl. They are such great cheap gliders to experiment with! Update and mini-build blog so far.
