  1. Hi Guys My latest creation. Nothing special, an SLEC Fun Fly, but it is the first ic model I have built in years. OS 40FP up front. If the wind and rain ever clears hope to maiden it soon. Wish me luck Jeff
  2. Hi Guys Yet another glo starter to add to the collection, but this one might be of interest. Only took a couple of weeks from China. Thing is, it works from 6v to 24v. so same source as 3s LiPo for the pump and starter. I have a couple of smaller motors I'm playing with, which hand start so don't need a starter. Support gear then is a small LiPo which will run the pump and the glo starter. Kind of goes with my minimalist approach to carrying extra gear. Only disappointment is it had a led indicator which comes on as soon as power is connected. If it came on when the plug started to draw current, it would have been perfect. Ho hum Jeff
  3. Hi Guys, couple of things Can anybody link me to one of those blue anodised glow sticks with meter. Found only one on e-bay, and that was £24.75. Second anyone tried one of these Can't have been around for long. Exactly what I was looking for when I started this thread back in July. Don't know of they have some sort of indicator when current is flowing, but betting they have. Got an e-mail into the seller asking that. We'll see Jeff
  4. Hi Graeme Just an add-on to my previous post. been tracking this parcel on Hermes' site. It is due to be delivered Thursday, but the site says 'We've got your parcel and it's on its way but a major event is slowing us down.' Not sure what major event that would be, but it might mean my letter arrives before the parcel. If so, still a chance. Jeff
  5. Hi Graeme Would be nice to think so, but it won't happen. Apparently the seller was unable to get through to Hermes to change the address. So, as it stands a mystery parcel is going to arrive at someones flat, with no idea where it came from or where it should really have gone. I have no way of getting in touch with the current occupiers to warn them. I have written them a letter, but whether that arrives before or after my motor I do not know. If it does, and the occupiers are good enough to let me know it has arrived, looks like a 160 Ml round trip to pick it up. Lot of pieces to fall into place before that happens. Jeff
  6. Hi Don Sage advice as always, many thanks. Motor also has broken fins on the head, so sure sign of an impact sometime during its life. Maybe one to miss out on. Currently only one bid of £9.99. Might put a speculative bid on of, say, £12. See what happens. Other than that, I'm not sure you're right about the carb. On the LA one the fuel inlet is plastic and either moulded or glued in place. Either way not removable, where the FP one is a threaded hole for the spraybar. Not sure about the spigot size, but certainly won't have the same part number. Good thought anyway, thanks. Jeff
  7. Hi Guys is it paranoia if they're really out to get you? So, bought the 40LA. Turned out to be an expensive paperweight, c'est la vie. Back to e-bay bought a 40FP instead. Seller managed to despatch it to the wrong address, one I moved out of 2 1/2 years ago. Lots more on e-bay, but having no luck actually getting one so far. Can anyone confirm whether the LA carb will fit an FP? Looking at one with a broken spray bar. Worth a punt if the LA carb will fit. Your thoughts? Jeff
  8. Hi ED, thanks Using the rear needle would be handy but not critical. As I said in my last post, current concern is to try to get the motor delivered to me here. Apparently it's being delivered by Hermes, and only the sender can change the address. Had a long conversation with him yesterday, but that cut short when he had to go to work. Waiting to hear back from him now. Fingers crossed Jeff
  9. Hi Nigel Yes I'd heard they were more powerful than the LA's. If I can fit the remote needle, would have the best of both worlds. Mind you, there's a snag (isn't there always?) Just heard from the seller. Apparently e-bay have given him an address that is two years out of date and was deleted years ago. So apparently my motor is headed for somewhere 100 miles away. Ho hum Jeff
  10. Hi Robin Little puzzled. The one you linked to was on an auction with 6 days still to run. How did you manage to buy it today? Jeff
  11. Hi ED Don't know if the spigots are the same size, but if so I can transfer the carb as well as the needle. Will know more when the new one arrives Jeff
  12. Hi Rich Thanks for the ideas, maybe not so much for that awful pun! However, you're a little behind the times. Since I have already found a cracked conrod, perhaps I have already stripped the engine down? Who needs an exploded diagram for an LA? Also, I don't have a new conrod, only seen one for sale. Final nail in the coffin is this. Spotted what looked like a spot of rust on the bore. Closer examination, it is the brass liner showing through the chrome. So, no doubt, this one's a write off. C'est la vie. Got a FP coming off e-bay. Would I be correct in assuming I can transfer the remote needle set up from the LA to this? Quite like the idea of keeping my pinkies as far as possible from the whizzy bits plus it would mean the LA is not a total loss. Straw clutching at its best, eh? Jeff
  13. Hi Guys Thanks for your thoughts, but I've found something else which puts the whole project in doubt. So first of all had the engine running on the bench. Seemed to be pretty sweet, although running rich and didn't seem to want to lean out. Probably just the carb wanting a good clean. Only reason I noticed the gasket was the amount of unburnt fuel collecting round the back of the engine, which led me to the backplate screw missing and from there to the gasket. However, checking the rest of the motor out, I find a crack in the big end of the conrod. Bush itself looks in good nick but has left me wondering what else I'm liable to find. Found a new conrod on e-bay, not too pricey, but means the motor not such a bargain as I hoped. If I find anything else, then costs could spiral. So, opinions please. Soldier on or cut my losses? Thanks Jeff
  14. Hi guys Got an OS 40LA with a blown backplate gasket (plastic backplate). Internet search suggests I can make a new one from, for instance, a glossy magazine cover. Can't imagine this being a high stress part, so what do you think? Anyone suggest a better material? Jeff
  15. Hi Wilco Was this the plan I sent you? Jeff
  16. Hi Rich £22 model plane, eh? What's that all about? Meanwhile, motor for the Blob seems to have sold itself. Scored a 15FP off e-bay for a very reasonable price. See what it's like when it arrives, but looks pretty much brand new in the pictures. Taking a bit of a chance, because it's listed as 'for parts or not working' but I think this is only because the seller has not tested it. We'll see Jeff
  17. Hi Guys Pat Yes, had considered sidewinder, but the issue is this. Model is a SAS Blob, now re-kitted by NJR modelling. It has 1.5mm ply sides, and no internal formers, so I would have to invent some form of internal structure to hold the motor in place. The model is all ply, with foam wings, so is going to come out fairly heavy anyway. Not sure if adding extra weight would help rather than hinder. I do have an electric set up that would suit, but rather fancy the idea of a diesel. Rich Thanks again. That's more like it. Wondering if the 1.49 would have enough power for the model. Did spot this little beauty on e-bay. Doesn't have an rc carb, but given the limited power, would I be running less than flat out anyway? Decisions, decisions. Jeff
  18. Hi Guys Thanks for your help, but I think it's a non starter. Rich Looking to fit it in a Blob sloper. This is the old SAS design, recently re-kitted by NJR modelling. As a sloper, it has a very narrow fuz, especially at the nose, and I think widening that would spoil the look. So with a width between sides of only 35mm, not going to fit. Shame really, pretty much a retro model, fancied the idea of a retro power source as well. Ho hum. JD8 Yes, that's the dimension from the PAW website, but it's not clear what that refers to. Looking at the measurement Rich has posted, I would guess the 33mm refers to the distance between the mounting bolt holes. Certainly it's not to the edges of the bearers. Thanks anyway. Did consider whether an 09 (1.49cc) would be powerful enough. Maybe so, maybe not, but still have the same issue. PAW site says 22.2mm between bearers, and 29.2mm across bearers. Assuming that is the distance between mounting holes, gives me 6mm to play with. So, extending the question to include the 1.49 engine as well. Anyone with one lying around, could they measure this for me. Interestingly enough had a look through e-bay to see whats available, came across this. Referred to as a PAW 100, but would anybody really pay £152 + £54 shipping, where a new 1.49 from the factory is only £84. Jury still out on this one. Jeff
  19. Hi Guys, quick question. Anyone got a PAW 15/19 diesel and can measure the distance between the outer edges of the mounting beams? I want to fit one in a fairly narrow fuz, which is only 35mm wide on the inside. So, will it fit? Thanks Jeff
