  1.   I have an Irvine .46 bought with a complete set-up from ebay in a Twister low wing sport trainer. I removed the servos and engine ( without the mount ) and installed them all in my Chris Foss trainer, after fuelling up, charging etc I filled the tank for the first time ( after loads of grief trying to get the hand crank to work ) attached the glow plug and electric starter and nothing happened. I increased the throttle a tiny touch tried again and away it went. I found the engine faultless, it starts 1st time every time and is very responsive. This is my 1st aircraft and engine so can only comment on this one, I did start it with a finger flick on several subsequent startings because to be quite honest I felt the electric starter a bit pointless because it starts so easily.I can recomend this engine to anyone from my experience.
  2. Thanks Richard    having dragged the box out for a closer look it looks like it is a Super Flying Model own brand. The Insignia is an SF in the centre with half a wing either side making it look like RAF pilots wings on his breast pocket. The flight box is made by Super Flying Model so I assume it is an own brand, that means I suppose this question is directed to David Ashby really. I would think then that wherever you obtain your flight boxes from that they would be able to supply the Power Panel attached to it.   You can email me direct if you don`t want to put there name up here for general viewing otherwise I can put my direct email address here which I don`t want to do at present in case I breach any policies for this site.
  3. Didn`t think about the fuel spillage, white spirit removes the sticky so I suppose that the fuel would too. Looks like the paint brush is gonna come out after all,oh well never mind still looks good anyway.
  4. I have a hand crank fuel pump and battery for the glow start. The panel in the pic is blue and white with a symbol very similar to the RAF`s double wings insignia.
  5. I would like to know if the flight panel pictured on the free flight box from RCM&E is available to buy, if so where from ? how much ? and does it have a built in fuel pump ? Yeah I know I don`t want much but somebody must know. I have recreated the box pictured on the lid of my freebie flight box and just thought it would look nice with the same one as the real box looks so much better than the piccie. Thanks guys (and gals probably some  somewhere)
  6. I subscribed to RCM&E and got the free flight box which came in a box in kit form. Instructions are in the form of pictures ( no written instruction at all) but very easy to assemble. My biggest choice was to decide on how to paint the box, paint it, varnish it or what. I decided  to recreate the box pictured on the lid but instead of painting I have covered it with fablon (sticky backed plastic) most impressive if I do say so myself. Fablon was purchased from Wilkinsons 1 X roll white & 1X roll blue @ £3.50 per roll. Only tools reqd are a steel ruler, craft knife and a cutting mat ( or scrap of hardboard ) to cut on.
  7. I used to sail an R/C yacht so when I saw the article about flying from water I immediately thought great and read the entire article. It is on this website somewhere, I don`t remember where exactly but it sounds like a goal to aim for to me. Get myself flying first, take my tests and then worry about the wet stuff. My local park has a nice big field and yep you guessed it a big pond at one end. I think a letter to the parks dept might be in order soon, then i can have the best of both worlds.
  8. Have not joined BMFA yet because there is only a couple of months left for the current years subs, I am waiting for the new year. I already have a club lined up but again they charge a one off fee each year of £28 subs again not going to pay that just for a few remaining weeks of this year. I have done my homework and not just jumped in feet first, I did state that I had visited 2 clubs both quite different. One the members were very friendly and extremely helpful but thier flying field is ( I thought ) very small approx 50` x 20` trees in front and very long grass all around the actual strip, a footbridge very close by and a fairly busy road. On the opposite side is a field full of horses. I didn`t think this was a very good situation. The other club has a massive field open on all sides with plenty of clear visibility and no obstructions or hazards nearby ( except other members ) so I know which i will be joining.
  9. Hi as it says above my name is Ed, or Eddie I don`t like my given name of Edward.   I am a total beginner having not yet joined a club ( I have visited two local ones ). I have asked those all important questions and received in a very friendly and helpful manner all the relevant answers. I have taken out a sub to RCM&E got my free flight box which I have duly assembled and read several articles in the mags and online. Based on all my newly found info I purchased a Chriss Foss trainer from a very helpful Paul at a Hornchurch Model Shop who also told me of  my other requirements for essential and non-essential eqpt. Money is an issue for me because of illness I can`t work so with an agreeable Model shop owner I set about obtaining the essentials by instalment payments. The intention was to go 2.4 ghz as this seems the most obvious for today and the future of R/C flying.  The trainer was paid for and assembled although the instructions are wrong because the control rods come out the opposite side to what the instructions say. This is where my plans changed because listed on ebay  was a complete set up for £225 all new and totally unused a bargain I knew. I sent the email asking if he would accept payment by instalments which he agreed. A month later my wife and I drove to the New Forest ( I`m in Dagenham, Essex ) and paid the final instalment and collected my  new purchase. This consisted of an aeroplane ( Twister retail price £139.99 I am told )  an electric starter, glow starter, spanner, spare glow plug, hand crank fuel device, silicone tubing, battery, Irvine .46 engine all the associated chargers etc  fuel and last but not least a futuba radio set which I thought was a 6ex, on examination of my newly acquired parts when we arrived home I noticed the radio is in fact a 6exp not an ex even so still a bargain price. I know someone is going say that is the wrong plane to learn with, I knew this before I asked about buying it. What I have done is transferred the engine and radio gear into the trainer with the twister to either be retained and flown once I have learned how to fly or to sell on. My trainer has not as yet taken to the skies but I have had it running and taxied a couple of lengths of my garden.  I was surprised at the ease that this engine fired up. The only thing I have purchased in addition so far is a refuelling nipple which I mounted on the side of the fuselage to aid re & de fuelling. I would like however to change the transmitter & receiver to a 2.4 set. I would be grateful to anyone that could assist in my learning to fly or would welcome any suggestions as to something I may have overlooked. Thankyou all in anticipation
  10. Just to confirm we should buy british,I have just bought a Chriss Foss ARTF Trainer. This is my first go at R/C and must say I am not impressed with the quality. For those of you reading this then please excuse my ignorance on naming some  parts. Admitted assembly is easy and quick rapid, even for a beginner like me. Starting inside the fuselage I found that once assembly was complete and I had installed the radio gear I  had to make some adjustments. The plastic tubes that carry the control wires to the servos from the tail were too far back and the rods jammed up, same with the throttle linkage. I have an Irvine .46 mounted on the supplied mounts, these I had to file away a small amount to allow the engine to seat properly.( the rounded part of the engine below the mounts was too fat ) Finally the covering film has lots of little bubbles in it especially on the underside. Apart from that this is quite a smart looking aircraft. It has not as yet taken to the air but the engine is running and it has done a couple of lengths of my garden. I am more impressed with the engine than the actual plane, starts first time every time.
