Hi Martin I tried your triangle calculater angle a=1degree leg b =52inches half of wing, which gave me leg a 0.9 inches distance under one wingtip.hope this is right I never was any good at maths.
0.9 inches under each wing tip.
-
Thanks Steve Balsamart looks good, bit costly on postage.
Martin if I have 1 degree of dihedral what would that give me under each wingtip ?
John no rear brace .

The Sig 1/4 scale clipped wing is almost the same as my J3 I believe ,the newer version of mine does the 2 types I think.
I shall cut a straight brace, just thought I need one on the back that's missing as well.

Hi John, thanks for the pic yours looks like I would expect mine to be,in the instruction manual it looks straight(flat) and the first 2 ribs are supposed to set the angle of dihedral, not sure though.
Which cub have you got?
-
Thanks John, should the dihedral wing brace be a straight piece of ply normally they have the dihedral angle built in.
-
Thank you John and Dennis,SIG must have forgot to put it in ,Have seen some Birch ply on ebay, needs to be 15 inches long,so I shall need a sheet 12" x24" might get some 1/8 sheet, can I only get it from model shops?
If I laminate 2 sheets of 1/8 ply would that be stronger than 1 sheet of 1/4 "(more laminations)

I need to get some 1/4 plywood for my 1/4 scale cub, what sort should I buy,I have some here but it doesn't look up to the job.it needs to be strong.

I might see what I can do with a lemonade bottle and my hot air gun.
Your plane looks great in your pics

How easy is it to do the front windscreen? I also have one to do on my 72 inch near scale Cessna 172,been building this from a plan for 30 years was going to be powered by an os 40 but thinking of electric power now.

Hi John,The Sig kit was good value for money, been building it for 10 years now on and off, need to get on with it now and try and get it finished this year if I can.I bought a Magnum fs 120 xl at the same time as buying the kit, never built anything this big before. I built an 84 inch Radio Queen 28 years ago, still flying now.
Hi Martyn, thanks for the offer but I think I will use some of my pine
-
Thanks John ,hard balsa is out,so its ply ,beech or pine,I have plenty of pine.
Thanks Martyn will have a look at Hobby craft,

I need it to screw the elevator horn on to,does it matter if its hard balsa, ply pine or bass wood, its not going to take much pressure.Normally I would put in a bit of balsa but being such a large model I want to get everything right.
-
I have some small pieces of ply I shall try that
-
I am building a 1/4 scale sig piper cub. I need a small piece of basswood for the elevator horn insert as it is missing ,would hard balsa be just as good?

I have only used nicads up till now ,ran the batteries till they were flat then fully charged them ,should have bought a smaller battery.
I shall just keep them topped up 8 hours over night.better than 36 -40 hours.
So theres no memory effect on NIMH batteries like there was supposed to be on Nicads.

Need a bigger charger I think,I have a GT POWER V5 for my Lipo`s which will charge NIMH would this be ok ?

I shall give it a go on my 35 year old OS 25 that runs realy well ,what ever fuel you put in it.
-
I have 7 old cans of fuel in my workshop, anything from 5 to 15 years old ,would any of this be ok to use?if not what should I do with it?
It is surprising what you find after a good tidy up.

Hi Ken thanks for your quick reply, last time it was flown was 12 months ago.flying well no problems,I should think it is set somewhere near. should I leave the needle valve alone once set.
I don`t mind blowing the plug, but was worried about blowing the engine.
-
My ASP 52 4 stroke was run in last summer .
Where do I set the needle valve for normal running now its fully run in,i have been told that too lean could blow the engine?
-
Thanks to caveman,Graham and Bob after reading this at around 9 ish this morning I went out with a list of things to check, first of all there was a blockage in the needle valve, silencer was loose and i took spinner off prop, eventually got it run in 2 1/2 turns out leaning out at 2 1/4 turns.
Jon I think you are right about the engine throwing props my MDS 40 did exactly the same, screwed the needle valve in 1/2 turn more than what the instructions said and it was fine.I wish i could build an engine.
Cuban 8 thanks ,I also have a Magnum 120 fs to run in sometime for my 1/4 scale cub, probably next year, still lots to do on this ASP

I began running in my ASP 52 4 stroke today ,as the instructions said that came with it.First tank was fine but the second tank cut out after 2 minutes and then it wouldn`t start again fired a couple of times but wouldn`t run, then the prop kept coming loose,is this from being far too rich, needle valve 2- 1/2 turns out, throttle half open.

I have a MDS 48 on a Gangster hoping to start it tonight for the first time, came from Weston Park 3 years ago.box of 2,just hope one of them works.
