  1. Not much today - just sanded the bevel on the frontend of the tail boom.     I'll be away for a few days so I'm afraidthats it for a while. Cheers, Rob
  2. Well, I couldn't be happier with the way the tailboom turned out.  OD ended up at 40.05mm.  Unfortunately I didn't get anything more done today but I will try and get the fuselage floor and top cut out tonight so its ready for when I get back from my trip.   Cheers till next time, Rob
  3. Hi guys.  Been a bit busy at work so haven't had time to post anything.  I've pretty much finished the wing - only have to shape the leading and trailing edge, add the wingtips and sheet the top.  I've decided to add individual flap servos; the price of them doesn't warrant mucking about.  Spent a bit of time cutting and shaping ply plates for the servo bays but all done now.   I think our water pipe is a bit bigger than what you have in UK - 42mm OD which would have made my boom about 4mm oversize.  Just happened to have an unopened roll of Profilm at 37mm OD - perfect so Ive just finished glueing up the tailboom and set that to dry overnight.   Looks like no flying tomorrow - rain, rain, rain.  I'll need to take my pilot's test before I fly again it's been so long.  Oh well, more time to press on building.       I'll post whatever I get done tomorrow then won't have much chance to do any more for the rest of the week as I'm heading up north to Townsville (Queensland) on business.   Cheers, Rob
  4. Hi Guys   An "Australian Made" Siebel is on the way in Sydney (perhaps the first downunder?).  Thanks for the design Tim - as soon as I saw it I knew I had to make one.  Loved browsing through your build Ton - between the two of you I have some catching up to do.   I'd intended starting some time ago and have collected together servos, motor, speed controller etc,  but I had a bit of a "whoopsie" with my Peter Miller designed Luciole so had to build a new set of wings.  I've also taken the opportunity to convert it to electric power from the wildly overpowered OS Wankel that I originally had in it.  Anyway, the building board is now clear so away we go.   I usually like to start with the wings so that is what I've done. I first made some ply templates and produced a set of ribs (plus a few spares).   Next, a trial assembly to make sure I understand how the centre section goes together before comitting the sticky stuff.   and thats about it for now.   Ton I hope you don't mind if I join on to your thread? Doesn't seem any point in starting up another.   Cheers, Rob
  5. I'm an Aussie as well!!!  No, not my particular type however I have prescription glasses with fairly small lenses and I found that the "Model Flying" glasses sat over them quite comfortably without touching lenses and it works quite well - not sure if that's what they intended.   Having said that, they do make a set of frames (Innovation Plus) in which you can have prescription lenses fitted and the various filter lenses provided fit over the outside.
  6. All  As mentioned in my original post my glasses broke a while ago (about 4 weeks) after owning them for approximately four months. I guess I was lapse in not contacting Model Glasses immediately to make them aware of what had happened. I stumbled across Bruce’s post and that stirred me into action and I duly contacted Model Glasses via their website. As I said, I found the glasses themselves to be fantastic and in fact they greatly enhanced my flying enjoyment as I was able to where them around the outside of my prescription glasses.   Please all be aware that John contacted me this morning, less than 24 hours after my original website contact so, allowing for time differences I think that was pretty responsive. He was most helpful in trying to confirm what specific model my glasses were. John, I was not intending to cast any aspersions on either the product or your company – it was just that stumbling on the original post prompted me to post a reply and stirred me into action. On reading back over my posts I will say that I didn’t intend anything negative, although  I can see perhaps that saying “nothing heard yet” may be interpreted as a negative comment on your customer service. If so then I apologise and reiterate that is not what I intended. Other than my broken frame, I cannot recommend these glasses highly enough for their functionality and at this point can only say that the company’s response to its customers is very prompt. Thankyou John.   Regards, Rob (and I never had any problems with the nose pieces)
  7. Interesting.  I contacted them via their website yesterday - no response as yet.
  8. Bruce   Guess what!!  Mine are the red ones and I wouldn't say I even got a dozen uses out of them.  Glad I've spoken to you - I'll contact them from their website and see how I go.   Do you mind if I refer to your experience if I feel it may help?   As you say the glasses (when they are in one piece) are great.   Cheers
  9. Bruce   I just stumbled across your post.  I have a set (can't remember which model at the moment), which after around the same period broke halfway between the nose bridge ad the arm when I was changing lenses.  I don't consider I was using excessive force and was doing it as per the instructions.   I've been meaning to contact them re a replacement but didn't hold out much hope.  You've now prompted me to have a look on their website where I found this statement  - "don't be afraid to do this - the frames are shatterproof and will not break)."  http://www.modelglasses.com/change.htm.   All that aside, I found them fantastic whilst they were still in one piece.   Cheers, Rob
  10. Yes, never tried flaps before but as you said, absolutely no change in pitch.  just as well because my Tx doesn't have any flap/elevator mixing available.   It looks like its going to be a great weekend flyer - the engine starts instantly, sounds great and everyone wants to ask questions about it.  I guess it spoils the lines of the aircraft without the cowl and spinner but I kind off like it - what were you saying in your build article about it not being ugly - just different.  Mine's "differenter" still.  Also helps with keeping it cool until it gets into the air - I have heard they can overheat very quickly without good airflow.   Still haven't made up my mind what to tackle next.  I have a Pica Jungmeister which I bought second hand (untouched in the box) and that is calling.  I also have a Precedent Stampe kit which has a few bits missing but nothing that cant be recreated.  I'm sure I can fit a Super Trooper in quickly first - I'll have to get someone else in our club interested in CL though as its pretty much died out.  You may find the following website dedicated to the early years of the Control Line flying in Aust of interest http://www.dkd.net/clmodels/.   Glad you're still churning them out - I avidly await each RCM&E issue to see what you're doing next   Cheers
  11. Hey Peter, saw your comment on our website.  Yes, it was pretty scary however all is tamed down now - have just gotten home after a brilliant mornings flying.  The weather has been terrible here, raining over the last 3 weekends so this was the first outing for the Luciole in nearly a month.  During that time I've managed to get a nice managable idle after fixing an airleak due to a hardened carby O ring and installing a new glow plug and a 10x4 prop.  Landings are much more scale like now.  It tootles along nicely on around 1/3 throttle but if you open it out during a low flyby it's spectacular.  I'm flying it myself now and am having no troubles at all.   Thanks again for a great design - now you've got me thinking about breaking out my control lines again.  I just love that Curtis Hawk styled Supertrooper and happen to have a little 4 stroke sitting in a box that should do the trick nicely.   Cheers, Rob
  12. Hi all - finally got around to posting some video of the Wankel powered Luciole on our local club site - anyone interested can see a takeoff and landing (warp factor) here http://www.freewebs.com/wpmac/apps/videos/channels/show/1475519-general-wpmac-flying-at-mulgoa.   Feel free to have a look around and leave a message (decorum please) in the Guest book.   Rgds, Rob
  13. Hi all, well its its finished, looks great in my opinion and has flown twice now - both times its been the centre of attention down at my club.   The maiden was 2 weeks ago and everything went splendidly. However, not being familiar with the Wankel I had the idle much too high (you can't trust your ear because what sounded like a low idle was 4,5k when I tached it.  End result was a exellent flying characteristics at half throttle but a landing approach akin to a spacecraft re-entry.  The right wingtip touched the ground during the rollout and broke the aileron servo horn so that was it for the day - no damage to the servo luckily.  I'm thinking of adding wingtip skids as the horns are pretty vulnerable on our rough field.  Here's a picture prior to the maiden.   Second flight was last Sunday - I'd dropped the prop from a 9x6 to a 9x5 to try and bring the landing speed down to something less scary but couldn't get a reliable idle below 3.8k.  I'd like to try a 10"diam prop to get more of a flywheel effect in an attempt to get the idle lower but will need to bend up a new set of undercarriage legs first to give more ground clearance. Climb out   low pass     & in the opposite direction   landing approach   and taxi back Cheers all, Rob
