Hi Nigel Regarding covering your model, you could take a look at the Solartrim website. As a total beginner I found the video very instructive.

Excellent reading. Must be the most dedicated modeller I have come across. If you fancy trying CAD for only a small donation try progeCAD2008smart.It is similar to Autocad and can be configured to look the same.
