  1. Hi Rob
    I'm a newbie too.
I went for 'total' reliability as airframe, engine and/or radio glitches would not be much fun whilst learning basic controls.
So, I chose 2.4G (Futaba as that's what my club needs for buddy-lead training), Seagull Boomerang (recommended by hobby store) and OS46AX engine - smooth and powerful.
I use a simulator but nothing beats actual 'stick-time'. Try indoor/park flying as an alternative to a PC but get your BMFA membership in and join a club first.
Best of luck with this fabbo hobby.
  2. I tried the same materials as Gemma.
I have a problem with the 'clear' decal paper: it won't go through my HP Laserjet2600n printer.
The 'white' decal paper is fine. The supplyer doesn't know why and I can't see any reason either.
Anyone else had this problem or can suggest a solution?
  3. Hi Erflog

Yes, the suggested power setup comes out at over £200. The servos (HS65MG) are £20 a pop and you need four of them = £80 right there.
You can no doubt make do with much cheaper items, but wouldn't that defeat the object of making a well performing, sharp flying model?
I'd be interested to know the minimum cost you can get away with though.
  4. Cheers Phil.

However, I've costed out the bits for the Beretta and it comes to £430.  Too rich for me at this time.
However, I've found an EDF/depron Hawker Hunter in a sister mag, costed it out at £120 so I'll have a go at that.
Good luck to all with the Beretta.
  5. Hi Dave

I really enjoyed making, and flying, your Tiger Moth, in fact it was my very first build. So I've got to have a go at the Beretta.

Can you tell me wher you got the EPP from?
I've done internet searches but can only find the low density stuff and 8 or 10mm but not 9mm.

    Whats going to be next??
  6. Can someone please help me with a very basic problem?

When connecting servos to the Speky 6100e receiver, which way round do the plugs go?
The instructions simply say 2in relation to the polarity2, but without stating the polarity of the Rx.
What I'd like to know is: white/yellow wire up or down?

    Thanks for any help.
  7. Hi All

Can you bind the Ember (not the Ember2) to a Specky DX7?

If you can, can someone please explain how? I've tried Tx on first also Rx on first, but in both cases the Tx bind plug shows green but the Rx blinks red and no connection.
    Any help appreciated.
  8. Hi Dave
I've started with a Belt CP then TOTALLY modified it to get it to perform better. Then I got a Copter X and replaced ALL the plastics with Trex parts.
So, if you want to fly rather than tinker, go with the Trex. The other machines have cost me a lot more than the 'real thing' trying to emulate the 'real thing'.
I've got a Futaba T7CH. Fine Tx, Rx's rather expensive though.
If starting from scratch, I'd go for a Spektrum 7.
  9. Timbo
I take your point about only needing one Tx if it's a Spekky or a Jr. Fine if you're starting afreash with 2.4, but I'got a Fuby set as that's what my club uses for training.
I think the problem is too many different types of 2.4 equipment with little or no compatibility between them.
I've currently got four different 2.4G Tx's. Thats almost one per airframe!
And I'm looking at getting two more!!
  10. I've ordered the Planet budget 2.4 from Galaxy. They're not in yet! 'Expected mid April'

I've got 'proper' Futaba 2.4G (T7C). My problem is the cost of receivers for fomies and indoor 'toys'. Cheapest Futaba is £49, with full range stuff £15 or £20 dearer.
I think that a TxRx for the price of a 'proper' Rx is worth a punt.

What's more annoying is that there seems to be a number of models offered as 'binf-and-fly'. However, you need a DSM2 Tx. Not Futaba! This means getting a Spektrum. Just how many Tx's will a chap need?

  11. Hi Dave and all I'm a newbee. With so much else to concentrate on, I wanted a really reliable engine with enough power to pull me away if I needed to. So I got the OS 46AX to attach to my Boomerang trainer. My instructor showed me how to start, run-in and tune the engine and it works wonderfully. I could have saved money by not buying an electric starter, and also not having a power panel and 12v battery; the glowstart is all that is needed.
  12. Hi

I hope someone can give me a bit of advice on disposal of LiPo's.

Whilst clearing out one of my son's cupboards in preparation for a house move, I found  box of electric heli 'bits' including four LiPo battry packs. Three of them are OK (used a tester on them), but the fourth is VERY swollen - like an inflated balloon.

I've buried it in asand in a ceramic pot out in the garden, but I dont know how to safely dispose of it. Any comments would be of great help.
