Type approval

Recommended Posts

After 20+ years away from the sport I am now ready to return.I have purchased a couple of Jr Max 6 Txs but also still have my Futaba M series. I also have a Terry Platt design RCM&E set built in the 80s.I would like to use this set as well as the new stuff but it has never been type approved. Is there anyone out there who can and will do this as the 6 main people listed back then (ie Viking, DJ&D Modelgear ,Trio Instruments,Model & Control Specialists,Teleradio & Mr AP Simmons all seem to have gone defunct).I can use it in NI without it but most clubs nowadays don't allow it unless type approved. Any Help welcome

From different articles about a lot of other equipment "Type approval" is a complex and very expensive thing to aquire. I doubt you would find any firm accredited to do this who would be willing to do it. If I REALLY wanted to use such a set I would get it checked/sorted by a firm current in communication and control radio. Castle Electronics is one which I have used for Amateur Radio. Will still cost more than practical worth though.

The original design in this case has already been type approved. It was only after a set had been completed that it was sent to one of the aforementioned companies who had the proper equipment such as frequency meters and spectrum analysers to tweak for best performance and check for spurious sideband radiation before issuing a certificate. So I wouldn't have thought that it would be terribly expensive as the charges back in the 80s were just nominal handling charges. I know that it was 25 years ago but some clubs do wish to see a certificate.I am sure that most technical colleges that do electronics would have the gear but are they accredited to issue the paperwork?

I am sorry I do not know the detail. The articles I remember were about type approval under more recent EU regulations. If you can get a copy of the original certification it is likely still valid for your TX, although getting the Tx checked would perhaps be worthwhile to you. I believe that you are correct in that some universities do technical work in relation to type compliance. Talk to one or more. Interesting question this.

Does anyone out there have a copy of the original certificate that could be photocopied or scanned to me with the details and I can take it from there. I believe that many of these sets were built. As flytilbroke said Castle electronics may be able to help but some more information might help before I contact them.
PS does flytilbroke mean flytilskint or flytilsmashed.
