Fuel Proofer

I have finished my model using epoxy cloth followed by Halfords car paints (these being acrylic). Having researched originally was led to believe that this should be fuel proof, however, after finishing the model and test running the engine all was fine until I trimmed a fuel tube and a little neat fuel splattered onto the fuz and it softened the clear coat, so obviously not proof against 10%+ nitro fuel.
So now I am having to look at adding a coat of tougher fuel proofer, but concerned as to what product would be safe over the existing paint.

I have experienced compatibility problems before so nervous of this happening again.

Has anyone any experience of this finishing method with modelling fuel proofers on top?
