Peter Christy
Went up to the inaugural "retro" event at the BMFA centre at Buckminster on Wednesday (27th Sept). What a fantastic day, and what a glorious site! The runways were like bowling greens, and allowed plenty of take-off and landing runs, even allowing for the unusual south-easterly wind direction! Plenty of unusual and beautifully made models there. Lots of Sharkfaces, naturally, but lots of other classic designs too! Not just single-channel, either! Some very nice retro aerobatic models, Martin Briggs' Astro-Hog, a Vertigo, and (ahem!) my own KingPin. The highlight for me was seeing Martin Briggs' Schluter Huey Cobra flying superbly, having been electrified, but there were too many other lovely models there to itemise. There were also the retro radios - reed sets that have been "Gigerised", 2.4 GHz single channel sets, Galloping Ghost, you name it, someone had one there! It was a long journey from South Devon - 4 1/2 hours each way - but well worth the effort, and we were lucky with the weather. And as for the site, well, if you have not been there yet, its well worth a visit - whatever discipline you support. It must be the best dedicated model flying site in the country! Some of the buildings are still a "work in progress", but it is already a superb facility. -- Pete
