UBEC supply to Ignition system

Hi All, Does anyone know if it is OK to use a UBEC for powering the receiver and servos as well as an ignition system (Saito FG14a)? I have a Dr Mad Thrust (?) 5/6v UBEC which has a switchable output for auxiliary items. I would like to use this to power the ignition system (good safety as I can use it as an engine kill) - is that OK?

I have been using a Ubec on petrol engines to power Rx and ignition for a number of years. I power from a 2200mAh 3 cell lipo. This has proved to be very robust and I have never known the battery to be depleted to less than 60% even after 6 flights of 10 minutes each. This setup has been used on warbirds with electric retracts as well without issues.

On smaller models, my lipo is a 1300mAh 2 cell which is easier to install. I have had similar results when checking the level of charge at the end of the day.

Hi Matty, it’s a 2A 5v output and the rating on the ignition system is 600mh so hopefully it will be ok.

Errr, no, not really! Individual servos can pull 2A, especially if they are fast ones (contrary to popular belief digital servos don’t always pulls the most current, but all high speed servos seem to). 2A BECS are really only suitable for parkflyer electrics IMO.

That supply might be ok for the ignition alone, but do yourself a big favour and forget running the RC off it - that needs a separate power supply that is definitely up to the job. Given you are running a petrol engine the extra weight of a small 4 cell NiMH or better still a 2 cell LiFe should be insignificant.
