Flying Foam UK - 46" flying wing - ??

I got this kit with a job lot recently and it's quite interesting. Basically hotwire cut EPS foam wing halves and wooden spars. The wing looks pretty decent now covered in brown paper.

I couldn't find anything about these kits online - maybe somebody remembers this company?

Also this is my first flying wing. Does anybody have any wisdom about working out CG and how much reflex I'll need?

Quite a speedy motor in shot but I might prefer more of a powered glider direction.

Cheers, Tom

Hi Tom,

Yes I remember these wings, I used to cut them as a bit of a hobby with some custom CNC equipment I developed during my Engineering days at University. I stopped manufacturing almost 10 years ago but I’ll have a dig around for the old manuals with CG details and website etc. I’ll post back once I have something for you, if you have any questions just let me know.

The wings fly pretty well, they don’t suffer from the ‘death spiral’ problems that plagued many of the other wings back in the day. You can pretty much pull full up elevator with no throttle and they just mush down in a benign way. That being said, I’d go with the speedy motor, they are quite rigid wings and very stable at speed. If you do go high power, make sure you use some fairly hefty servos (~18g type) as reflex on this flying wing puts more strain on the servos than a conventional airframe.

The website should be back up now incase anyone just needs to access the manual: www.flyingfoam.co.uk. The manual is very basic but it has the recommended CoG position and control surface throws etc. The correct thrust angle was achieved by mounting the motor parallel to the bottom surface of the wing, hence this is what the motor stick mount was aligned with.

Tom, I would guess your wing is a mk1 but can confirm with you if needed if you share a photo of the wing section at the tip.
