John Stainforth
I tend to go with what the manufacturers say. So I listen to John re Lasers, but refer to the relevant manuals for other engines (e.g., I laboriously follow the procedure recommended by OS for their two strokes). Raises the question as to what really is "best practice".
Jonathan M
The good news is that the engine is now back in the model and running perfectly! Tops out at around 11,000, settles down at about 2,200, and opens up with very little hesitation even when its been ticking over for quite a while. The bottom line is that it was a simple plumbing issue - the fuel pickup tube had moved slightly down the metal pipework inside the tank at original installation and was touching the back wall, now prevented by an additional 1/4" shortening - and this had me scratching my noggin thinking it was a myriad of other causes! Good to hear though that the tightening at TDC is normal, and that modern sports engines are actually quite tolerant of just being run!
