I have always tried to be careful when using cutting tools or drills since getting a small metal filing in the eyeball many years ago when drilling a hole in the floor of a car from above. (I didn't need glasses then).
A few days ago I was cutting the end off a 2mm steel control rod, held in a vice, with a mini drill and small abrasive wheel. I always try to ensure that the sparks are going downwards. Usually I am aware that the cut waste end just drops onto the floor or in the litter bin below.  This time I didn't hear or see it go but thought nothing of it.
The next day I found the half inch piece of rod, it was embedded in the hard plaster ceiling above the workplace. This had gone past my head, I wear glasses now, but it could have passed under them with serious results. So, don't be complacent, wear safety glasses even for minor routine work with power tools.

Hi Richard, I just hope that all the "forumites" be they "old hands" or "newbies" take heed  of your "words of wisdom" A few years ago I was machining a length of brass bar in my lathe when a small piece of swarf hit the righthand lens in the glasses I was wearing, when I removed the glasses I found the swarf embedded in the glass lens. The moral here is to follow your advice and Protect Your Eyes !!
