There are a lot of THINGS we can make (after the idea hits the drawing board). It is just nice to know that we do NOT have to make everything ALL THE TIME....   Plus we can us an idea and modify it to our own liking.   Ps: ALL of MY ideas are GOOD! (but some IDEAS are a bit better than others)  

You may want to roll out a piece of laminate and glue it down. There are a lot of desirable colors & and surface finishes (hard,soft,shiney, flat)  to chose from these days.   Just the hassel of paints, varnishes, epoxy and end result would cause me to chose a good fancy plastic top.   BUT MY VERY-VERY-VERY BEST SUGGESTION IS:        ***** GO ELECTRIC *****      

We live on the shore of Lake Superior (The Great Lakes-USA).   It gets plenty cold up here in the winter and I just knew someone would eventually come out with Johnson Gloves.    

Hey Flanker, I don't want to be the 'Horse's Ass here' but we really like your work bench. It is like one of those pictures that ask you to find as MANY DIFFERENT THINGS as you can. Piston from a car...Toy Brass Canon.., Binoculars...Fry Basket from a deep fryer...Welding rods...and the normal stuff like Dremel goodies, pliers, cutters, wire,hammer... And a few misc. UNKNOWS! <wow>   Question: do you have a work schedule for all of these things ? Or do you JUST HORSE AROUND alot    The wife says it look JUST LIKE MINE.  and I hate it when she is right.  

 When you & Peter Miller look at a WOOD CHIPPER in action do you visualize just another ARTF without the BOX ???   Excellent motovation, and a few wonderful technical ideas (ie: WD40 on glass)   Ps: I was begining to think I was actually going to have to learn how-to-fly to enjoy this hobby.... no problem anymore thanks to you guys!  

Now this is way too good to ever leave the ground.
