  1. Blimey. I opened a preverbial can of worms here.   I didn't realise that it would make that much difference, and was going to take the TX on a drive to see how far the range would have been.   However, having taken John Privetts advice, i'm going to TEST the following combination. Futaba TX with Futaba 82 crystal. Sanwa RX with 82 Sanwa crystal.   As for Phil Wood's post about CB alpha channels......... ooops. Nuff said.
  2. I intend to use my Futaba TX's, so Iv'e ordered a Futaba 82 TX crystal today. The Sanwa stuff came with 82 installed already, so I'll put the 82 Sanwa Crystal back in the Sanwa RX.   I might sell the Sanwa TX on Fleabay.. if nothing else, it will pay for the Futaba Crystal I guess. Shame, as it feels lile a well made, if not very basic, piece of kit. I just don't have a requirement for 3 TX's.

    GP42 Engine

Folks   I think i may have fixed it.   I stripped the engine and checked the bearings for excessive wear. To be honest, I was really surpised how clean it was inside. The Piston top doesn't look like it's done a great deal On Reassembly I replced  the rear cover gasket with a new homemade one. Both carb screws were lazy, not really tightening up, so I made a new carb gasket and replaced the screws with a few small self tappers. And replaced the fuel hoses.   Although it now ran a lot better, it still rattled like a can or marbles on low revs.   In the end I had nothing to lose really, either try and fix it, or chuck it in the bin.   So I skimmed a little bit from the collar with the dremel, resulting in the collar being a little tighter against the shim. The end float has gone from about 15 thou to maybe 1 or 2 thou. Still has a tiny little bit of end float/clearence. Runs really sweet now. I guess the correct way to do it, would be to add some shims, but as I don't have any and was prepared to chuck the engine anyway, I thought, what the heck.   I guess some people will frown, but rest assured, I'll be giving it some serious ground testing before it goes in the air.Edited By Keat on 02/08/2009 22:24:19
  4. maybe i'll look at buying another futaba crystal for th tx then. thanks for the info.
  5. I think I've just answered my own question. The Futaba TX would not transmit either in PPM or PCM mode with the Sanwa Crystal, or if it did, the model had no response   But switch for a Futaba Crystal in the TX and another futaba crystal in the Sanwa RX, and the combination seems to work. I guess I just now need to do some ground safety and range checks.
  6. Folks.   My latest model (used low wing trainer) came with a Sanwa TX & Rx setup. However,  I'd much prefer to use one of my Futaba TX's.   Can I use the crystal from the Sanwa TX in a Futaba TX, or similarly use a Futaba Crystal in the Sanwa RX ?

    GP42 Engine

Guys.   I recently bought a used low wing trainer, which came with a GP42 engine. The engine sounds rough at low revs, but sweet on full chat. I also can't get it to tickover nicely.. I've changed the plug, and flushhed he tank incase of any old residual fuel. The crank shaft has tons of end float, wheras my other 2 engines have no end float what so ever. Can this end float be the cause of my problems, and would I need to shim it out ?Edited By Keat on 02/08/2009 09:53:50
  8. It's starting to get on my nerves a bit now.   I've drilled matching holes in the new mount, and mounted the engine to it, only to find now that the new mount, is a tad too big for the engine bay.. it just catches the quadrant, so it's either off to buy another slightly narrower one, or out with the dremel, and shave a little from the mount.
  9. Guys.   My tutor 40 didn't come home last weekend... due to a mid air collision, not with me fortunately. My model was being trimmed up by a club teacher, when the mid air happened above our heads.. of course, during the panic whilst diving for cover, we lost sight of mine. We did eventually find it...as 10,000 pieces of match wood in the ploughed field. To be honest, that's where most of it still is today.   I'm not too concerned however, as it had been in a scrape in the autumn and was rebuilt.   So to my problem.. I've come to put my old engine into my new Tutor 40, but the engine mounting holes are in a different position (offset).  So I can't use my old alloy mount, and the single plastic mount i do have isn't wide enough for an Irvine 53. I presume, this is known, and I'll pick one up pretty easily ???   Edited By Keat on 20/03/2009 17:42:46 Edited By Keat on 20/03/2009 17:43:37 Edited By Keat on 20/03/2009 17:44:11
  10. Guys.   I bought a second hand, but in great condition 35 mhz T6EXA, to be used mainly as a buddy box, but no doubt a second transmitter later down the line.   S/N 470508. Lot No 03043   One of the officails at my club, seems to think that these may have been subjected to a recall at some time or another, and for obvious reasons, suggests, I have this confirmed, before I but anything in the air with it.   I can't find an email link on the Ripmax website, so thought I post the question on here ..   Thanks for any info you may have   Keaton

    Futaba 6EXPA

A piece of cake.  For anyone contemplating this, and I wished I'd taken a few photos, it's really very simple. The Detent on the throttle is in the shape of a small flat metal clip held on with one screw. Remove the screw, remove the clip, and transfer to the other stick... Note that it fits the the opposite side. The spring is fiddly, I used a pice of copper wire with a hook on the end. Remove the spring, remove what looks like a plastic cam, (just lifts out). Fit the cam on the other stick.. note that it fits the opposite side, and refit the spring. In all honesty, the hardesy job was getting the four screws off the back cover

Tha manual says to hold down Mode and Select whilst switching on.  The LCD will display the current stick mode. Use the mode input button (the little black one on the right) to change the mode. It also says you need to change the detent.  General consesus is to move the ratchet from one side to the other, and swap the return spring around. I found another thread that suggests, tying the spring with a cotton thread, and using the thread to remove it, otherwise, there is a chance it will ping off, and you'll lose it.
  13. I love this sport.... much more exciting than football or fishing
  14. In my experience, landings up to press have been a breeze. The first one.. it all happened so quick, I don't notice how I did it. What a buzz though. The second one was easier, then by about landing 6 or seven, it all seems so natural. Not sure how i'll cope with side winds and dead sticks, but it all adds to the excitement.
  15. Stephen. I'd been getting praise from everyone at the club, on how well I was doing. My instructor would do the take off and landings, and I was flying solo in between, with him stood beside me just in case, after 1 session on a buddy lead. Everyone remarked, that I must have been doing this in a former life. Then after half a dozen successful flights, I attempted my first solo take off. To cut a long story short, it went home as a bag of matchwood. I rebuilt it, and 2 weeks later was back on the field, with no confidence what so ever, I flew it like I had never flown before, all over the sky. I gave in after 2 minutes, I couldn't cope, so my instructor landed it, and I went home. What with bad weather, and family commitments etc, I didn't get back up to the filed until about 2 weeks ago. Last week, I performed my very first solo landing. Today, I performed my first solo take off. And trust me... I was bricking it. In fact I made 3 aborted attempts, before I finally got her in the air. In total I've got no more than about 90 minutes flying time, so from the sounds of it, we are both on the same par. Of course, I'm no where near qualified to give advice, but if I could, I'd say " It's only money". Good Luck buddy, and stick with it.... what a buzz.
