  1. Lots of interesting reading; many thanks to all who contributed.

Oddly enough I've now come to the conclusion that the best solution for me is to mount the ESC's in the fuselage. I only need to solder on some extensions from the ESC to the motor and no other mods apart from a simple wiring harness to the Rx and Battery.

I will also cut out an air exit hole in the bottom of the fuselage to aid cooling.

  2. As a short break from a balsa glider build I'm finally putting together a Mpx Twinstar that I've had for 5 years.

I know this has been discussed many times but I'd like thoughts on best practice between lengthening the wires between Motor to ESC v Battery to ESC.

This will dictate whether I mount the ESC's in the fuselage or on the wing directly behind the motor and need to make a decision before I go any further with the model.

    Cheers.

  3. Some fitment issues and other minor little niggles.

The minor niggles to begin: The kit is supposed to contain a couple of templates, the first to help obtain an accurate circle when shaping the nose of the fuselage and the second as a guide to shaping the tailplane pylon. Neither were present in my kit. Not biggies and easily overcome.

On the plus side a template is provided to help the positioning of the wing ribs although this is not mentioned at all in the instructions. Related to the jig, both it and the main spar rib slots match perfectly however the plan does not match them exactly.

Which leads into a small matter of parts not fitting accurately and needing modification in some way or another............see the following photos for details.

That's interesting, the shear webbing in your kit has the grain running the length of the spar, the one supplied with my kit had the grain vertically aligned which is why it broke so many times in assembly.

I recall you saying something along those lines Shaun.

Do you have any tips about gluing the wing joiner bays?

  5. Having more or less completed the various fuselage parts, apart from a few minor bits to shape and hone it into an aerodynamic masterpiece, I'm going to put things aside and have a look at the wing centre panel next.

However, I'm going to spend some time carefully analysing both the plan and instructions in the persuit of more anomolies before joining any balsa to balsa.

Look out for the next exciting episode courtesy of your favourite magazine and forum.

  6. Geoff, I know very little of classical music but I generally like "most" forms of music - if it lifts the soul then it does it for me.

Metallica are a very well known "Heavy Metal" rock band and the piece the girl arranged and played is one of their best known "quieter" songs.

The second video was a random piano at a public place. However, the pianist guy is well known for going around the country and mostly pretending that he can't play and encouraging others who can to "teach" him. I particularly like the video because it just shows that it proves the saying "don't judge a book by it's cover."

I watch and listen to many street musicians of all types who clearly have fantastic talent and it amazes me how most people simply walk on by. I guess everyone must be too busy with modern life or simply ignorant and not truly aware of what's going on around them.

  7. While a despotic man wreaks havoc upon another nation a young girl of his country displays absolute mastery of an instrument to deliver a stunning musical performance that displays the pure talent, creativity and beauty that the nation posseses.

I could have picked from a variety including Stairway to heaven, Bohemian Rhapsody but this rendition of Nothing else matters by Metallica does it for me.

  8. I think I'm going to go down an alternative route for my lipos too.

Recently looking at some 3S 1800mah Turnigy's to replace some that I have had for a couple of years which now show signs of puffing and reduced power output.

I was shocked at the prices HK are now asking and they certainly don't seem to be the bargain they once were, and when shipping is added it gets worse still. And, that's from the European warehouse to Spain.

CNHL offer good price/performance on their lipos but stocks are almost non existent on most of the common sizes.

Agree with you about the elevator slot. The control horn slot in my elevator is a couple of mm off-centre, makes the pushrod run slightly easier. I built an earlier version for bungee launch and the slot is very off centre on that one as the pushrod exits the tail boom at the side rather than the centre/top.

Shaun, the control horn slot is 10mm off centre. The photos in the manual still show the pushrod exiting the pylon and boom on the left hand side which adds to the confusion. In my opinion the manual needs to be re-written with reference to this part of the build and the parts need to match what is shown on the plan.

I know the model was updated with the wooden pylon to meet competition requirements but I imagine the original boom with the moulded in pylon would probably be a better bet for the average sport flyer and probably lighter too. My pylon comes in at 5.4 grams which will increase when bonded to the boom.

  10. A little more progress with the completion of the tailplane pylon.

Although straight forward, careful study of the plan is important as there are a few areas where the plan is inaccurately drawn, the parts don't match what is drawn and the instructions for this are woeful and confusing with very poor photos which also don't exactly correspond to what is written.

However,  the pylon is complete and fits the boom as it should with the tailplane mounted. Nothing glued in place yet though, that comes much later.

  11. I arrived at my club at 08:00 this morning where it was dead calm and 18c; perfect for some final trimming/set-up flying of my recently completed Marabu by Topmodel CZ. By the time I left at 11:00 the temp had risen to 27c which I can just about tolerate while standing in the middle of a flying field.

With temps set to increase between today and Sunday it will be a 7:30 start for me from now on.
