Aero tow line characteristics
andy harrold replied to Grasshopper's topic in Gliders and Gliding - General Discussion
I do not know the Mentors tow position but I guess it is on top of the main wing above the C of P. As models are weak at the rear this is where towlines tend to be positioned.low towing is a NO NO. the glider must stay high and keep above the tailplane. make sure the line is over the top before you commence take off.very exciting if you dont! At my club we have done a fair few tows this summer/ autumn with an electric Rainbow, with a 2826 motor on 4s and with a Boomerang trainer with an Irvine 53 for when it is windy! as for the line, we use kite string, 30m i think.and no weak link. each model has a release servo and top tip. keep your finger ready. when it goes wrong, it goes very wrong, very quickly.! However , with a bit of practice and teamwork you will be smiling from ear to ear as you succeed in a high tow. GOOD LUCK.andy -
TBH Phil, i do not need to alter the controls as that is not my problem. i can still use the AR500. i only took it out and replaced it because the AR500 has to go back for a minor repair, so i slipped the other rx in just as a temporary so i could go sloping. once its back from HH it can go back in again. it was the difference between the 2 that surprised me. andy

hi there ,hopefully the title says it all. i recently removed an AR500 from my WT glider and installed a n other spektrum rx.( the one with the satelite that came with the dx6i, 6200 i think). however, when the new receiver binds, which it does readily, is sends my servos to a position adrift of the AR500.full trim to the left being required to centralize the control surfaces. as the servos are buried under layers of x weave tape inside a taped on fuz recentring is not easy. when i rebind the AR500 , bingo , straight as an arrow! try again with 6200, adrift, rebind AR500, perfect! any thoughts. is this normal? andy Edited By andy harrold on 17/11/2009 18:22:52

Seagull Boomerang Trainner ARTF
andy harrold replied to Alex Hasell's topic in Build Blogs and Kit Reviews
My Boomer lives on 2 years after i started flying./ crashing/ rebuilding/ did my A / son did his A / father in law crashed it / repaired it. it presently has an Irvine 53 up front and is used as a glider tug. ( BoomerTug) pulling EGs and also has a side mounted digital camera (Photo Recc. Aerobatic Tug) the covering does not like fuel so fuel proof all the seams well. and enjoy . a great trainer. SC46 will perfect. -

andy harrold replied to Big Bandit's topic in Gliders and Gliding - General Discussion
there are some sea cliffs near west runton and hunstanton but you need a Northerly wind. i haven t tried either but saw it in another posting. inland i think you'll be struggling. -

How to tow a glider?
andy harrold replied to Ben Mullins's topic in Gliders and Gliding - General Discussion
i have converted a merlin. it is very lightweight , 6oz, and i am not sure it will handle an aerotow unless you use a very lightweight tug. i have got 2 servos in mine ele and rudder .there is no room for a tow release servo. the wing is very light and with no ailerons i reckon will not tow from the grass well. (i also have a nebula 2000. without ailerons it did not tow up at all well. but it did come down well once the wings had folded!) my merlin has been hand towed with cotton thread and floats quite nicely. i think on a very light wind day it would work on a slope. good luck, i hope i haven't put you off . at present i am having great fun aeotowing an easy glider. it hand tows well, aerotows well and flies well. sloping it soon andy -
Hi Gary, i flew a Nebula 2000, it is electric but I didnt use the motor all day and i had 5 flights with a total duration of approx an hour , before i dinked it on a landing and cracked the tailplane! I also flew my 109. It is a GWS foamie. The wind was blowing SSW and I had a less than successful flight. I was probably a bit too keen to see if it would be OK on the slope as the last time i flew it on the flat I had control difficulties with poor aileron response. well I know know that the control problem is still an issue as in the blustery conditions managed to lose control and snap the fuselage in half.! it will fix.! My pal flew a Virage glider and a Windrider Fox. Even with 15-20 mph winds the Fox struggled to find lift. we both went home with sheep on our shoes but having enjoyed the day all the same. Do you own / have a share in that 1:1 scale Moth? andy Edited By Phil Wood - Moderator on 20/05/2009 19:39:20

Alastair, Thanks for the tip on the control rods. I used the spare to make cannons!! A much better idea than replacing the ailerons. The request for varnish info was not from me, I just cut and pasted another posters question as I couldn't Quote him. and I then answered his query. thanks once again, andy

I would be interested to know what varnish other people are using on acrylic paints so I dont have this type of hiccup on the next warbird. I used cheap acrylic art paint from a craft shop and then used Wilko Quick Dry clear matt varnish, the cheapest i could find! It paints on like milk, but dries clear. I only used one coat because i was afraid of adding weight but it is proving to be resilient . It has had a few somewhat unorthodox arrivals but has survived well. I did tape the canopy on with a bit of tape for one flight,( the magnet arrangement is poor and the velcro replacement had come loose) which was a mistake. When I removed the tape it pulled some of the varnish and paint off. I think the experts call it "weathering" slightly off topic. but my latest problem is that I am suffering asymetric aileron. the hole into which the torque link rod fits has become worn and is causing the left aileron to become sloppy. i intend to try a balsa patch of the inner 20mm of aileron. if this fails i will replace the whole aileron with balsa, but that will mean having to rehinge. watch your six spitfire pilots. andy.

Blizzard for field and slope
andy harrold replied to Andy Freeman's topic in Gliders and Gliding - General Discussion
andy. Do you have an update to your quest? I too would like a flat field/ holiday sloper. cheers andy.h -
I am a bit late to this party but have to say "That is a nice Spit you have there" Did you consider replacing the elevator with a balsa one ? The ele on my 109 , which has now flown some 10 or so sorties, is becoming pliable also I would be interested in what throws you have decided on after a few flights. (A pal is building one as we speak). regards Herr Galland.

Ultimatey - I feel you were a little harsh on GP1. As a newbie he asked for advice and you tried to make him look stupid and as you have not posted to the contary I believe you have no knowledge about the planet product to which he was enquiring about and therefore had no reason to post. Maybe I am wrong, if so I apologise but it appears that way to me. Moving on........ I know GP1 personally and although he is a newbie to the forum ( I introduced him to this one) he is not a newbie to flying, is a club instructor, always helping others at the flying field and all round decent chap. He evens subscribes to RCME! Having flown my GWS 109 he has bought a GWS foamie Spitfire( to dogfight my 109) and was just enquiring about the new cheap option for 2.4 which he had read about in the mag associated to this forum. My foamie has BRC esc motor battery servo's. Not a Hacker/ axi JR, top dollar battery. AND so do most peoples. Slightly inferior products but up to the task in hand , and that is what he and most of us wants.
