  1. He he! I can't wait Kev. To be honest Tim, I don't think Thurstaston is to great for touch and goes. Can't quite get enough height to be able to get up speed when you come behind the slope. I will practice them at the big rock. Mikey
  2. Thanks for all the compliments on my flying! I can't wait to get to the Orme next to show off my new skills. (and flight) Mikey.
  3. Alex Leigh said Don't be scared of the downwind speed, that's what I've learned. I'd say that's the best way for a near beginner, which I still am (unless you dont mind going for a nice big walk) I can land pretty well now but my first few landings were downwind, hence my new nickname. Had a little bit of flying time today with my dad (Polyphilla) at our local site. Great fun! Few decent landings and one or two downwinders. Which was either for the excitement of the speed, or because the wind had died off and I was forced to come In QUICK!. Also had a good go of ridge soaring. Almost managed to tickle the hairs on my Dads nose a few times with the WT trailing edge. Damn i love slope soaring hahaha!!! 4. Not to mention my one successful "Touch and Go!" and a number of successful landings. Not bad for a beginner. I wonder how long I can hold onto the beginner title haha! Lets not go into detail of my crashes . Seriously though, great day! Lots of combat and a few nice pricey models flown. Looking forward to the next outing. Mikey "Mid Air" Matteo
  5. So the Poly-Proto Team don't get to take your new WT's virginity In combat just yet Timbo ? Looks like we'll just have to welcome the old one back in open arms he he. You've got to love a bit of confidence lol. Seriously though, I said to Dad the other day. I wasn't really bitten by the bug until last weeks fun, I think I just enjoyed It before - But now I can't wait to get out there again. Mikey "DL"
  6. You where the 500th post in this thread Dad! lol Pointless information but i just noticed it. Mikey DL
  7. My 'ald man (Polyphilla) and I have just gutted our WT as some of you may already know. We've given it a few organ transplants and we're now working on a skin graft. We need some good idea's for catchphrases or slogans to adorn the wings. As I have access to sign making facilities, graphics and text Is easy. Things like "Wildthing, I think I love" and "Wildthing, you make my heart sing"  have been done on its previous cover job. The slogans don't have to be to do with flying or WT's, just anything funny. Any Suggestions?   P.s. Rude ones are welcome but it may be best to PM those Mikey "DL" Matteo Edited By Downwind Lander on 24/03/2009 16:41:03
  8. Yes, GREAT DAY!!! I surprised myself many times with my flying ability. I think I surprised Dad aswell because he kept asking if I was ok. I was busy trying to chase Timbo, and doing (quite) a successful job. WON'T BE LONG TIM' Can't wait for the next one, Will be fun to get Kev In the fight aswell. :D Mikey

  11. haha I'm working on that one Ben. Give it another year. Many thanks everyone. DAD lol
  12. There are the odd few, one being x-plane. I havn't used It myself but does seem to be top dog In the market. There is also SSS (Slope Soaring Simulator) for PC but there is a patch to let it run on OS X. Great considering It Is a feebie but you do get what you pay for (£0) and thats a quite difficult setup. I'll talk you through if you want to go down that route. Obviously you can also emulate windows on most macs now be it "boot camp" or VMware Fusion" but if you have a windows computer already then there's probably no need for that.
  13. I should be so lucky Tim. That's the 1st time I've been out to the clubs in a LONG time. I'm not the clubbing type to be honest. I can cope with once every now and again but It gets boring. Plus, I'm to busy with the music for going out, so It was a good opportunity for a break from routine. I should be fighting fit for the 4th though
  14. Here's Timbo and Kev (Iawnski) landing. To damn close If you ask me! Good indication for the need of life insurance Andy.
  15.   Timbo battling the wind...... Videos to come soon, i will do some editing.
  16. HAHAHAHA! I never realised that was the reason for Polyphilla. I thought It was just a play on words for Phil. Hi Andy, I'm Mikey - Also a newbie. I'm Polyphilla's better looking son. Welcome to the forums. Mikey.
  17. I may be wrong but, When It comes to the sales of the magazine (I mean this magazine In particular, not other beauty, or Pop mags) It doesn't matter about the cover, If you have subscribed, your getting It despite what the cover Is - Job done, SOLD! If you're buying It each month at the local shop -  If It didn't have a picture you particularly liked, you're not going to put It back on the shelf and say "Nah, It looks %$*&, Not buying It this month" Maybe that's why there has been all these big BRIGHT, flashy looking pictures each month. The magazine Isn't trying to sell It to YOU with the cover - you're already going to buy It. Maybe they did It to make the magazine brighter and more noticeable - To stand out on that shop shelf for the possible newcomer. Whilst this months picture Is a wonderful one, that the majority Is happy about, It is more likely to get lost In the magazine shelves because of the colours - Quite dull compared to bright pink "THIS CELB BARES ALL NOW" Last months was the bright yellow one If I remember rightly, that stood out. I think If they follow the theme of this months In the next few issues, people will be complaining saying "oh not another one, can't we have a nice bright spitfire " (maybe not ) Really, It doesn't matter to me what RCM&E do with the cover. Somebody Is ALWAYS going to complain. One person may want to see a spitfire cover, the other may say "I'm going to scream If I see another spitfire" Some may want naked girls In an airbrushed studio shot, the others may want a scale model In a field. This thread could go on forever, why RCM&E chose the covers they did, when the only real answer will come from someone who works for the magazine and who knows the actual reason why.  Mikey.
  18. I'm completely new to modeling and flying, so bear with me. I noticed a few posts mentioning the decline In popularity of modeling hobbies. It got me thinking. The following aren't necessarily my views or beliefs, more thoughts and hypothesis. I'm thinking the loss In popularity Is down to a lot more things than just the magazine cover Isn't appealing enough. Particularly the building side of things maybe more to do with these "ready made" £30 Argos things. It Is similar to that of home cooking - People are cooking less due to fast food and "ready meals". I know a nice looking cover Isn't going to make me buy the magazine If I haven't been introduced to modeling In the first place by a friend or relative. I'll just walk past the shelf where It sits, lost between the endless amounts of other magazines. I've just done my first build! I haven't got a "ready to fly" thing. I was introduced to modeling by my Dad, and I believe If I hadn't have helped him with his models the past few weeks, i would have not known how much I enjoy doing It and therefor would not buy the magazine. I guess what I'm trying to say by that Is - Someone might not even realise they're Into building models. When you get these ready to fly things, you don't have the feeling of achievement when It's completed, or the worry and excitment of it's maiden flight. The only way to keep It alive Is pass on your knowledge. Another possible reason Is this "health and safety" world we live In. I couldn't get a taste of flying unless I got insurance, then join a club because you can't actually fly a "park flier" In a public park. As well as have to pass an exam to be able to fly In the club. Soon are the days where we will need insurance to ride a pedal bike or to push a pram - anything.  The only reason I managed to get a taste of flying was because I was taken slope soaring. Just threw It off the edge and flew the damn thing (on a buddy lead of course). I wouldn't mind giving powered flight a go because of it - not just yet though, lets get sloping aced first. I don't think it matters whether there Is a female model wearing a belt for a skirt or just the prop of a plane - It's the content, the stories, the crashes, the reviews. Also RCM&E can not please everybody. I'm sorry If people disagree, heck - I'm not even sure I agree Its just some thoughts.
  19. Also there is a Slope soaring simulator - Oddly enough called SSS that works on Apple Macs. It's not the best graphics in the world and again, is generally programmed for slope soaring but i think it would still give you some experience with how to control a model. I'm very much in the beginner stages of model flying myself.  It can be a bit hard to set up, so if you think you may want to give it a try, just let me know and I'll be happy to talk you through.  Mikey
