  1. Well Gangster that's a bit of good news; the last time that that happened to me (RBC Havard) the result was not pretty. It took me half an hour to find the parts. I did toy with the idea of making a balsa cowl but persevered with the plastic one save that I did reinforce the front of it with a plywood disc and that made a big difference. Mind you, mine is I/c and by the time you have cut out for the cylinder head and silencer there is only about 60% of it left. I'm
  2. I have just finished one Fergus; you will not be disappointed. The only issues that I had with mine were with the plastic cowling; I still have it, but it's very flimsy. The aeroplane flies really well. Trevor

  4. Actually I have just noticed that we have both been working on the same kit! A photo of mine with home made decals is below; I would have preferred to have painted them. I don't think the Reg letters are quite right and will probably do them again; fin flashes are painted but the little griffin badge by the cockpit was painted using a cut mask; I was very pleased with this even if it's not strictly scale.
  5. Geoff I bought one of these a couple of months ago having seen Danny refer to one in his Chipmunk build. I have been very impressed with it. The software is a bit crude c( but I am no expert) and I have found that drawing outlines in turbo ad and importing them works well. I have cut decals for 3 aeroplanes with it and have experimented with paint masks; these worked well but my airbrush technique leaves a lot to be desired. I used Frisket as a mask but did not have very good results a and need to find a better material. I have not yet mastered alignment of multiple cuts and rely on doing it by eye; using soapy water helps align the decals though; I am not sure that method would work very well with a paint mask but I have not tried it. Using thin card I made several laminations to make an instrument panel for my Gangster. I placed the instrument prints at the back and then built up the laminations with a layer of acetate behind the final lamination; this gave depth to the whole thing and worked really well save that it could have been a bit bigger. So far I have got through 3 blades, I find that as they wear, the depth serttings need to be increased; however I noticed that the white end cap does actually unscrew to reveal the whole blade; when I took an old cutter apart in t his way I found tiny shards of vinyl clogging the blade so it's worth checking for this before fitting a new cutter. All in all I am very satisfied with the cutter; it has opened up a whole new raft of possibilities. I just wish I could find some suitable aircraft fonts to get better lettering; some of the free downloads that you can find on the Internet do not seem to work - the letters need to be outlines.   6. I love it Stevo; did you use sticky foil or paint for the reflectors? I think that I will have to add lights to my next scale project. I quite fancy a sound card as well.
  7. Stevo I am impressed with those tips and the wing construction they look really good. Will you be making the nav lights functional?
  8. I decided to take the bandsaw to the tips and go for radical surgery. I think it will be easier to make two new ones rather than mess about. Hopefully two new tips will help improve performance. The plan shows the maximum rearward position for the centre of gravity; I have used a method for determining the correct position 25% of cord measured at 40% of the length of the distance from root to tip. This suggests that c of g needs to be 15mm further forward. I will give it a try and see what happens. I will also balance the aeroplane with wheels retracted.

Will o it's just the tips; I might be able to laminate some soft balsa with the tip in situ and then reshape them both. since my last post I measured the tips and compared them with the plan; if I project the line of the top and bottom of the wing they should slope down 15mm from the top and up 5 from the bottom. Apart from being unequal, the slope on mine is all wrong. Pity I did not do that to start with.
  10. Max, I like the look of your design; I use a magnetic board and if these could be modified to accommodate a pair of 6x6x25 magnets at the bottom I'd be interested TREVOR
  11. Thanks Alan My top picture is not helped by being inverted, but I get what you say - I have confused the issue. What I am trying to show is that if I line through the leading edge it is lower than at the tip so yes, washout - kind of . The other wing does not exhibit this difference so I agree, I should in the first instance try and get both tips to be identical. My inclination would be to mirror the left wing and tilt the ailerons up a tad as suggested by will-o.
  12. Thanks will-o; it might do and I will certainly try it, but having now realised the difference between the wing tips I ought at least to get them the same to start with. I was fortunate the last time and don't want to take any chances. Do you think that a couple of mm would be enough up?

I have tried sticking a flexible ruler along the leading edge of both wings; by bending the ruler around thetip I can see that the left wing tip is just about at the same position as the main l.e. However, the other wing tip is slightly above so I guess this is slightly wash-in as opposed to wash out. The plans don't show any washout, so I suspect its not built in. I could try cutting off the tips and tilting them down a little but fillI am not very excited abut that given the amount of filling needed. The other option would be to try adding some balsa and reshaping the tips to create some wash out - the question is will this make a difference? I could set both ailerons up a little (I will do that anyway) but does anyone have any bright ideas? I will also revisit the c of g and move it forward a bit.
  14. Apologies for the radio silence; I have been pressing on with the build and lost my way a little with the forum, particularly since there was nothing very unusual about the build. I finished the Spitfire about a month ago (more or less) and she had her maiden flight on Saturday. Before I tell you how that went, here is a photo of the completed aeroplane sans cannons - I have since fitted those. The propeller is temporary; I am going to try a Xoar WW2 type. I also have to fit some u/c doors but I thought I would try it first. To my surprise she balanced without additional nose weight although I think I could have been a bit more precise on my measurements. The plan shows the maximum rearward position for the c of g; it does not give a range. (well if it does I did not find it!) but I was probably at about the rearward position. After having run the new ASP in (no problems there) I persuaded my chief test pilot to give her a run. Take off was nice and straight and lift off good although she dropped the left wing a bit just after rotation. The flying was kind of okay but I could tell that there was something not quite right; she needed a fair bit of aileron trim and turns did not look quite right so a landing was attempted - all good until a tip stall (right wing) at an altitude of about 3 feet. Net result wings separated from fuselage and a bit of damage to the undercarriage - all repairable. Altogether not a very rewarding first flight. Collective view at the field and afterwards was that the c of g was too far back, but concern was expressed over apparent lack of washout. I have been looking at this tonight and will post some more pics for advice.
  15. Dear Manish That is kind of you many thanks. I have not got that far yet and the Moth project is still on hold; hopefully I will get cracking again in the Autumn. At the moment much of the cockpit area is assembled but not glued so I have time to learn from your experience. Trevor
  16. Dear Manish, good to hear from you. I had planned to use the thin servos as recommended on the plan; I have them ready to use but I must say that the idea of an authentic cable operating system does sound rather fun! I am now very ashamed to say I have not progressed the moth for several months; distracted by a Spitfire IX from Cambrian and now a Mick a Reeves Gangster. However I did dust the fuselage off the other day.... Best wishes Trevor
