Building the Nijhuis Lysander

Hi guys Many time past since this thread begins, and I'm very glad that you fellows continue it. Congratulations Darryl. Go on Jonners, we will wait for your Lizzie. Mine flyes time to time, this last weekend in a meeting in Sevilla - Spain. Regards Mário -
Hi Mr. Mackey Yes you are wright. In Portugal we put like I do separating the units from the decimals with an (,) 10400 gr = 10,4 Kg = 10,400 Kg = 104 dg = 1040 cg Thank you for fixing the video Regards Mário

Hi guys First thank you for your kind words ( those I haven't thank yet ) and then A.A.Barry forgive me for all this time without answer you. About using FS 40 in a way I think more power in the plane gives more confidence because you know that if you need power you have it and this is important, BUT if you have only the power to fly like the real one you have to fly like the real one and that's is a challenge for the pilot ( in almost models we fly we have much more power that are needed and that make us power adicted because power solve many of models flying problems) As a conclusion, and that's only my opinion, this Halifax don't need the extra power that gives the 40 FS, because she flyes quite well with the 30's. Regards Mário PS - I have more videos that I can put later.Edited By Supermario on 31/05/2011 00:39:49

Hi Michel The final weight of the model dry ( no fuel) is 10,400Kg That is the result of change the tail wheel servo up to front, put a NiCd batery of 15 A ( 6 x 2500 mha/1,2 v) for the glows plugs in the nose ( 400 g ), two lipos 220m mha (350 g ) also in the nose, and near a 300 g of balast lead for correct balancing point. Only 3 coats of acrilic resin upon the glass fiber, paint and one hand of barnish. Notice that I have more 4 servos Hitec Hs 81 in flaps, cables, hinges and linkages than Nijhuis prototipe. And cables to the plugs are quite many and heavy. About flying the model I must say that you have to fly it just as scale. Is noble but like a turbine jet. The response of the engines have some delay. For example if you make a low pass at the midle of the field you must apply near full engine for at the end have power to rise up. Anything else you want to know just ask. Ahhh, about the flaps, you can cut them out, make a leading edge in the flap and a trealing edge on the wing and make them work easily, without doing that scale work I do. Well Best regards Mário

Hi guys First of all thank you all yours kind words, I hope soon you be so happy with yours Halifax as I am with mine. JUst received a couple of photos of the second flight. Hope you like Another And the last Regards Mário

Just as a conclusion. The plane flyes great but the flaps are essential for a real scale flight. In the other flights after the maiden, when the model were correctly trimed we could clearly see that the plane passing low without flaps balance a bit the wings and need aileron correction. With flap half position, the speed was quite reduced and the plane were very stable, and the flight very consistent and scale. The OS 30 engines is the correct amount of power for the plane. The climb must be quite progressive in an angle from 15 to 25 degree. We are achieving a better aileron response and the elevator comand is quite sensitive. Congratulations to Tony Nijhuis for this design, but I just don´t understand how can he say that don't put flaps because he thought the model will be very " draggy" and in the RCM&E video that I saw a thousand times, the model flyes in a speed not to pretty for this plane. Guys if you are still in time put flaps. That make the diference See as I see the Halifax passing at a very low speed at 1m of the ground is an image we can forget. Best regards Mário ( Special thank for my dear friend Terry Whiting )

Hi guys Last photos before maiden Just want to say that Unitracts retracts are quite good. Not even one minimal failure Since the moment I aplied them always working perfectely. I don't use the servo valve they send I use one Air Power electronic valve. All working fabolous. And the running up I used 15 liters of glow fuel to put, with the help of my good friend Sérgio, those OS 30 running properly. To all of you that are making the Halifax, this point of tunning the engines is the most important. And now dedicated to all you guys that have been supporting since I begin this thread Edited By Tim Mackey - Administrator on 18/04/2011 19:41:46

Sorry This one was left behind Now the Halifax can take the sky with no fear because it very well armed. See you

Hi guys The plane is now ready to do the maiden flight I use all this time to finish it running and no much time to post. But I will try to resume all the pictures First, start to paint the wings, I gave the dark earth colour to all the surface and you can see the masks. Now painting the green colour Masks out and start to paint the roundels Some white colour under for the red don´t came to dark Now painting the red And the roundel done Now is time to work in the cowls Four of them is quite tedious Air intakes in place, test fit all and painting Another pic now with the coper colour in the front One more I think I left this one Painting and installing the UC doors The acess hatch in the outer nacelle Install the flaps and ailerons This is how the nacelle flap works Now begining to do the weathering work
-
Hi guys One more update For don't let you guys many time without news. Well, just start to finish the UC nacelle. After conect all the cables and tubes now is time to put the solid balsa block and gave it shape Trial fit the fiber UC doors And the work at the rear of nacelle I made some vacuum formed pieces for that That's what happen when the flap is down One part folds into the other Now a view of the all nacelle only needing the cowl and the intakes And at last doing the finishing works before fiber. And that's all folks! Regards Mário

Hi guys Just like I told on the last post I still have some pictures left in my camera that I can post. First i had started to fiber the wing, a couple of hands of acrilic resin and a primer and all I need to begin to make the panel lines Working near of the computer to look at the drawing and measure the width of the lines and spaces. And finnaly arrive to complet all the lines and very happy of the way the wings looks like Another picture Now is time to go back to paintings The under side of ailerons and flaps And the upper side with the camouflage Now I'll work in weathering and then gave the barnish So, now is everything I got...or no!!! Hi guys Thank you for yours kind words I just needed that extra motivation that you gave me. Michel About the weight I just don't look nothing, just keep saving were I can I think, the model don't have much weight, all the parts are extremely light, but when is all done I'll weight it and tell. Danny Yes the plain balsa is quite good for vacforming. With a great deal of sand you can obtain a very good surface. About the cuting procedure note that I glue under the pieces balsa sheet of 2,5mm and the dremmel tool you see in the picture is placed 2,5 mm high so the two halfs join exactely in the same plan. Terry my good friend This update is at your request. Thank you for your friendship. Best regards Mário

Start to nfiber the wings And make all the connections for the glow switches Note that I have to put one thing that calls diode and is an electronic device to make the energy to go in just one way Look all the cables I need for the glow switches And solder the interruptor that have 3 positions 1 - Off ( all disconnected 2 - Current direct to glow plug for start procedures 3 - glow switc ON, and glow plug ON on ralenti Well I have quiet more pictures and progresses but I will post it later Regards Mário
-
For the UC doors I made a foam box, glue the plugs inside and put quite some and of demouldant Frekote Then I use clay ( I think is the word ) And the moulds appear Used glass clothe and epoxy resin to do the pieces And the final result is not to satisfactory because I put little clothe and the pieces went a little soft. Well using the same moulds I'll do others with two layers of 200 gr glass clothe Test fiting the pieces in there place Also begin to work in the cowls

More glasses on windows and hatches Mount the rear undercarriage The servos for tail wheel and elevator And a steering arm for the tail wheel Because I need to do many equal pieces and I was decide to do that in vaccum formed parts I build for the first time a box for the vacuum Build the wood rectangls to secure the ABS The plastic in place And the first experience that turn to be a disaster Happens that with the heat the paint that iI used or the primer to finish the plugs, creat bubles and all messed up. This is how the pieces became Well, I have to clean all the painting from the pieces and try to do the vacuum forming with the pieces just in balsa. After many time, always observing the errors and triyng to correct, finnaly I arrive to the correct temprerature and the pressor from the vacuum and ther it is. And another Cut the pieces with a Dremmel tool And the pieces done

Hi guys Lately I don't post to much the reason is not I stop my building but last week finnaly the event were I want to present the Halifax is deted to 14th and 15 th April and going to fast and not much time to stay in the computer. And before I go to the event, that is in Spain and call Bellota Jets, is the greatest meeting in this zone and is for Jets and Scales, I have to maiden it and make a few flights to know better the model and is flight. So, I continue with paintings and do the insignias in the fuselage Quiet a job Another view And the last Almost finish the rear turret Only after do the maiden flight I will do the gun, for now it will fly like this Began to put all the cables and extensions for servos and glow switches Is quiet a mess of cables Start also to make the glasses. I use acriclic from CD boxes that have 0,8 mm thicknes

Hi guys Ton thank you, as is your first appearence in this thread I took a look at your models and I'm quite impressed. Many and good models and building and designing skill. Congratulations. Tony "putting us all to shame" NOOOO is not my idea. About costs you're wright. I go on buying things and desperatly always four or them. I had stop for some time to make financial exercizes adding all the parts for don't squeeze my good mood. But the last things I have to buy is an Emcotec power box and all rx batt and on board batt Regards Mário
