  1. That is going to be a missile then Stuey ! If they are only 170w standard & you nudge it up to 700w !!!!! I still can't believe they go "ok" on 170w & the hand launch seems to be fairly easy at that !   Matt - overlander sell the fan + motor combo for about that price (4S or 6S about the same price) @import url(http://www.modelflying.co.uk/CuteEditor_Files/Style/SyntaxHighlighter.css);@import url(/CuteEditor_Files/public_forums.css);
  2. Stuey,   i would be very interested to hear about your upgrades to the F15 - after reading the reviews & learning that it's only 170w, i think this might be the route i have to take too !   Having said that, there's one or two YT videos & to be honest it looks as fast as my F18, which is 360w (on the standard HK fan with a 4800kv turnigy outrunner)   My main niggles with it are the strength of the foam, (as David pointed out in his review), and the silly little battery compartment underneath.   Maybe upgrading the motor, poly-c and possibly a hatch cut behind the cockpit might make it a more usable jet ?? @import url(http://www.modelflying.co.uk/CuteEditor_Files/Style/SyntaxHighlighter.css);@import url(/CuteEditor_Files/public_forums.css);
  3. i wanted to go there yesterday Tony, but work etc just wouldn't let me   shame i didn't know that earlier, I think a friend of mine went, he would have grabbed one for me - never mind, will get one ordered off the website, gotta be a cheap jet at that price & if it's not quick enough I cna always upgrade it.   Read the review by David Ashby & it seems as if it's a good one ! (and the F-15 is one of my favourites to add to the hunter, F16 & F18   @import url(http://www.modelflying.co.uk/CuteEditor_Files/Style/SyntaxHighlighter.css);@import url(/CuteEditor_Files/public_forums.css);
  4. cheers Nigel, spot on thanks
  5. Ah! more candidates   nick - i havn't seen a habu fly, but from what i have read, aren't they a bit of a racer ??   stuey - nail on the head there mate that Gruapner F15 is perfect & if i can find one anywhere near that price, it will be heading this way shortly ! (done a quick google search but no dealers showing up - thanks for the suggestion, back onto google to find one     thanks again chaps @import url(http://www.modelflying.co.uk/CuteEditor_Files/Style/SyntaxHighlighter.css);@import url(/CuteEditor_Files/public_forums.css);
  6. I might just do the same Tim ! Although i keep looking at the little Alphajet from century, looks very well behaved & quite fast out of the box.     @import url(http://www.modelflying.co.uk/CuteEditor_Files/Style/SyntaxHighlighter.css);@import url(/CuteEditor_Files/public_forums.css);
  7. I agree mark, the HK F18 is a little cracker & i have had dozens of great flights with mine. I can't decide if to do anotehr F18 & run 4s (similar to Tim's 700w beast) or go for the lander F16 & use 6S the same as my hawker.   Obviously cost is an issue but the right plane matters as much to me.   I see your point about 2 for 1, but replacement of a total loss (less electronics) is the same for both isn't it   Oh well, no doubt I will make my mind up over the wekeend     @import url(http://www.modelflying.co.uk/CuteEditor_Files/Style/SyntaxHighlighter.css);@import url(/CuteEditor_Files/public_forums.css);
  8. @import url(http://www.modelflying.co.uk/CuteEditor_Files/Style/SyntaxHighlighter.css);@import url(/CuteEditor_Files/public_forums.css); what's your opinion on the best VFM edf's out there then chaps ??   I have always favoured the HK models, purely down to cost, but after buying the Lander hawker hunter, my mind has changed a bit.   To compare two ....   HK's F-18 with all the gear in, about £60 delivered price from their German warehouse. But, the standard motor isn't up to much, so even to upgrade to the spec of mine 40A cheapie ESC & a 4800kv motor + £20 makes it a £80 plane RTF. The standard servo's are cheapies & i had one fail already, but still a reasonable jet for the money.   or   Lander F-16 kit delivered for £60. 6S lander fan & motor, another £60. 4? MG90s servo's @ £6 each. Decent ESC £25 - A total of £169, so quite a bit more than the HK F18 but considerably bigger, a lot faster & all round a better model (imho).   Now, when the worst happens (assuming the electronics survive), replacement airframe cost is about the same on both !   Isn't the lander a better all round option ??   Are there better ideas out there ?   Yes .......... again i'm thinking of building a new jet LOL   When the worst happens @import url(http://www.modelflying.co.uk/CuteEditor_Files/Style/SyntaxHighlighter.css);@import url(/CuteEditor_Files/public_forums.css);Edited By john haz on 06/05/2011 17:34:00
  9. I have just read birdy;s link & am now a little wiser.   I can now understand why they heat up when used at less than 100% throttle, although it seems the only downside of doing this is the heat & if the ESc is running quite cool, there shouldn't be any problems looming (as others have said).   the part i wasn't aware of was the ESC to motor matching. i had (wrongly) assumed that if I fitted a max 45A motor, had a max prop load of 35A then a 40A ESC would (just about) do the job ! It seems that the motor might still draw intermittent high current, therefore cooking the ESC.   Better get some 50 + 60A esc's on order soon for upgrade purposes LOL   Thanks again to all that have contributed. I often come across snippets of info but rarely take anything as correct unless it's been posted on here - once others have picked holes in the theory, I reckon it's good enough for me to base my choices on.     @import url(http://www.modelflying.co.uk/CuteEditor_Files/Style/SyntaxHighlighter.css);@import url(/CuteEditor_Files/public_forums.css);
  10. Steve - i don't think it was a heli specific comment from him, just that with the heli in stunt, it really is a flat throttle curve, whereas a plane would be used with the throttle moving more.   i think it's a case of people thinking that a given figure (85% or 90%) is correct without understanding why they say it. @import url(http://www.modelflying.co.uk/CuteEditor_Files/Style/SyntaxHighlighter.css);@import url(/CuteEditor_Files/public_forums.css);
  11. excellent, thanks chaps   Cooling: I am pretty good with this, tend not to mount them under the canopy of heli's - have them strapped on the side to catch downwash from blades.   exceeding max current: I usually do that one pretty well too - both 500 heli's have turnigy Platinum pro esc's, rated @ 80A / the 600 heli has the same @ 100A The two EDF's & the Roo all pull around 350w & have 40A esc's, but although nearer the mark, they are air cooled very well & don't get more than warm.   thanks again for all the advice - It just didn't make sense to me that running les than 80-90 would kill the esc when a lot of us run planks at 50% for a lot of the flight.   Appreciate the quick replies too     @import url(http://www.modelflying.co.uk/CuteEditor_Files/Style/SyntaxHighlighter.css);@import url(/CuteEditor_Files/public_forums.css);
  12. Hi chaps   maybe somebody can clear up this conflict of information I keep getting ?   i keep reading that the esc should be run as near to max throttle as possible, anything less will cause problems with it overheating.   Then in the next breath, experienced modellers are saying "use the throttle" .   I only ask because one of my 500 heli's has a high (1900kv) motor & to get the headspeed I want with a 12t pinion, I run a flat 70% curve in stunt. Most seem to favour 80-90% but this gives me too much headspeed (for my preference).   I appreciate that 90-100% might be more efficient, but 2 people (both experienced heli and plane pilots) have told me that running max 75% will kill my esc !!!   My "theory" is that when i was learning to hover, i ran just over 50% throttle on a linear curve & never burnt one out. And .... flying my edf's, I spend half the flight at 40-60% throttle, again no problems.   Am i missing something, or is it acceptable to run an esc at a continuous 75%, or a varying 60-85% ???         @import url(http://www.modelflying.co.uk/CuteEditor_Files/Style/SyntaxHighlighter.css);@import url(/CuteEditor_Files/public_forums.css);
  13. mike,   i like that chart - excellent !   I too rely on voltages & more often than not run my 3S Zippy's down to under 11v, so i assume that chart is based on usable capacity ?   If we're only supposed to run down to the 20% mark on that chart, then I have been abusing mine for a long time & they are still good !!! - my oldest zippy's are between 12 & 15 months old & still run a 450 heli doing sport / scale flying for a good 7 mins !     @import url(http://www.modelflying.co.uk/CuteEditor_Files/Style/SyntaxHighlighter.css);@import url(/CuteEditor_Files/public_forums.css);
  14. Yep -100 both ways works, but doesn't add up in my head ! I would have thought that one should be zero & the other -100 (then each figure deducted from the throttle stick movement, but it obviously doesn't work this way).     the -125 offset seems to be ok at -100 or more.     @import url(http://www.modelflying.co.uk/CuteEditor_Files/Style/SyntaxHighlighter.css);@import url(/CuteEditor_Files/public_forums.css);
  15. Well, i found a mix that works on the R/DR - MIX switch but have no idea why it has to be setup like this - think I need to understand mix's a bit better   This works   Mix : Thro→Thro, Rate -100% -100%, SW:mix, offset: -125   Why do both positions have to be -100% ??   Wouldn't a -100 or -105 offset work the same ??   Why don't spektrum let us choose the switch WE want to use instead of having to use either the flt mode or rudder DR @import url(http://www.modelflying.co.uk/CuteEditor_Files/Style/SyntaxHighlighter.css);@import url(/CuteEditor_Files/public_forums.css);
  16. Posted by Tim Mackey - Administrator on 15/03/2011 08:41:13: Posted by David Gilder on 15/03/2011 07:24:40: If there's a demand, I can post the full procedure here for both DX6i and DX7. Just ask.     I would be very interested to see that mix Tim always found it a nuisance that I can't throttle hold my planks when I use it all the time on my foodmixers.   Tried it myself but it's not working as it should. Is there a way of using the aux 2 to thottle hold a plane ?     cheers,   John @import url(http://www.modelflying.co.uk/CuteEditor_Files/Style/SyntaxHighlighter.css);@import url(/CuteEditor_Files/public_forums.css);
  17. Hi Ant,   i have just built one with 6s motor & fan unit & she seems fine. Not much help i know   here is th 3575kv 4S MOTOR & fan unit   here is the 2399kv 6S Motor & fan unit which i have fitted in mine.   At a guess I reckon yours was the 4S setup, which would obviously be pulling very high amps on a 6S lipo !   Hope my info is of some use to you @import url(http://www.modelflying.co.uk/CuteEditor_Files/Style/SyntaxHighlighter.css);@import url(/CuteEditor_Files/public_forums.css);
  18. Mowerman - i agree 100% (fwiw). Seen a few models with IC engines hanging out ofr the front, one being a lovely Vulcan, completely spoilt imho. The pusher I can just about put up with because it's transformed a cheap docile model into something very lively !   Tim - LOL. Reckon it wasn't SO long ago, wasn't the first F-16 order delivered to the RAF in late 70's early 80's ? and from memory, in '75 petrol was 37p a gallon (only know because i used to work on the forecourt of Dad's garage & £2 worth was over 5 gallons ..... if only it was now !)
  19. After a few hours with some foam, glue & patience, she's 3/4 repaired After looking at Tim's damage & the end result, i just couldn't throw her in the bin.   So, i took her to work today & inbetween jobs did a bit of cutting & sticking. The canopy doesn't fit right, it's no showpiece & i still have to sand the filler & repaint, but i'm pretty confident it will fly another day   I like the idea of the ceremony for deceased models, maybe i should save mine up & heat the workshop all winter with them @import url(http://www.modelflying.co.uk/CuteEditor_Files/Style/SyntaxHighlighter.css);@import url(/CuteEditor_Files/public_forums.css);
  20. Haha !!!   i just KNOW how to get a response form the gods don't I @import url(http://www.modelflying.co.uk/CuteEditor_Files/Style/SyntaxHighlighter.css);@import url(/CuteEditor_Files/public_forums.css);
  21. Colin & Alan,   Sounds good to me   My flying buddy is a guy that flew back in the 70's & 80's, builds his own & generally a lot more knowledgeable than I am, he suggested converting it to a pusher.   So far it'a all good news, still looks like a f16 in the air, goes pretty well and i don't have to think about landing 2-3 mins after launching.   Of course, if it keeps going as well as it is now, the F18 & sabre might just get the same treatment (but my beloved hawker hunter will remain edf )   @import url(http://www.modelflying.co.uk/CuteEditor_Files/Style/SyntaxHighlighter.css);@import url(/CuteEditor_Files/public_forums.css);
  22. points noted from you both - thanks   I suppose a bigger esc & higher C rating lipo would help, but this one really is a budget toy & not worth the extra expense.   See my other post, problem cured now (probably not the "correct" way, but it works) @import url(http://www.modelflying.co.uk/CuteEditor_Files/Style/SyntaxHighlighter.css);@import url(/CuteEditor_Files/public_forums.css);
  23. Hi Peeps,   just wondering what the general view is here ? To be honest, it won't make much difference as i'm no "scale perfect" freak & if a plane looks like a plane, that'll do me.   My F16 foamie was a really cheapo purchase from a BMFA member & I am really pleased with it except the duration & power !   Running 2200/3s on the standard HK fan & a 4800kv motor, i got just 3.5 mins & it was pretty slow. Upgraded the fan to a 4 blade HET & got a bit more speed but still only 3.5-4.5 mins depending on throttle use.   Batteries (20c) coming off it cooked !   So ........ I have commited the cardinal sin & ripped out the edf unit & fitted a 2700kv outrunner with a 6x3e prop on the tail end ......... Transformed !!! goes like a rocket on 3/4 throttle & after a 3 min flight the battery was cool & had 50% left in it !   I know it's "wrong" but do I suffer a slow jet, spend a lot of money, or put up with a prop hanging off it's exhaust !   Tin hat on - do your worst @import url(http://www.modelflying.co.uk/CuteEditor_Files/Style/SyntaxHighlighter.css);@import url(/CuteEditor_Files/public_forums.css);
  24. Well, after a fantastic weekend of flying, out Monday wasn't quite as good   I powered up my f-18 foamie for a quick flight & noticed one of the aileron servo's was twitching, should have unplugged the lipo & put it back in the car but no ! it settled & seemed ok so I flew it.   2 mins or so into the flight i lost all control, I thought it was me with orientation as it was a long way off but then I got it out of the problem & brought it back for a landing.   Turning onto my final approach, she went into a spiral dive, no way of recovering ! It looks as if the twitchy aileron servo decided to go full travel down   Maybe have a go at repairing her today, looking at Tim's "problem" with his F-18 a week or two ago, this one might fly again if I have enough epoxy, foam & skill !   Not to be outdone by an amatuer, my flying buddy decided to upstage me by trying to kill and bury his biplane in one spiral dive - real shame, lovely little plane that will never see the air again   Next please ....... @import url(http://www.modelflying.co.uk/CuteEditor_Files/Style/SyntaxHighlighter.css);@import url(/CuteEditor_Files/public_forums.css);
