  1. Is that a belt driven 450 Steve ?   On the ones i have built there's a slot in the boom which aligns with the notch in the block, The block screws always seem to grip tight enough to hold it in place.  One of mine did have constant slipping problems, which obviously slackens the belt, so I just tensioned it & put a servo clamp tight behind the block to stop it moving in,   Servos ..   if yours is a SEv2 clone with the servo's fitted horizontally in the frame, yep they align spot on.  The pro does too but it's a different way of doing things & threw me off guard LOL  @import url(http://www.modelflying.co.uk/CuteEditor_Files/Style/SyntaxHighlighter.css);@import url(/CuteEditor_Files/public_forums.css);
  2. Having owned quite a few 450 size heli's over the past year, I decided to try the pro version & ordered myself a clone.   All my 450's apart from one have been clones & to be honest, I think unless you're into 3D or a very very good pilot, there's little difference from a genuine Align model, except the price.   It took me longer to build than I am used to, probably because it's narrow frame means it took me time to decide where the electronics should go & it wasn't just another SEv2 to build.   Likes: I love the torque tube drive system for the tail, so much easier to assemble than the belt system.   The frame is neat & sleek, although personally I think it looks no better or worse than the SEv2The fixed upper links (washout to blade grip)   The new battery tray   Flybar paddles fixed with grub screws rather than just wound onto a thread.   Tail servo mount  -  much better in the new "underslung" position fitted to the frame, rather than hanging on grips around the tail boom.    Would be nice if there was an adapter plate to allow a micro servo to be fitted -  the larger E-power ES20 i have fitted is far heavier than the mico's on my SEv2's.   dislikes: Servo mounts  - although they look easier to fit, I think changing a servo will be at least as difficult as it is on the SEv2   Motor mounting  - although the motor mount is metal, it looks as if changing a motor will involve either removing the whole mount or both servo's.    Routing the cables seems a little trickier & I'm not 100% happy with mine yet, but I prefer not to bury cables inside the frame, it is too much work to change components after a mishap.   Other than the niggles above, I really like it.      I havn't had a chance to fly it properly in a sports hall yet, but did a bit today in my spare workshop room & it feels very precise, probably on par with my copter-x which has always been excellent.   All my own opinions which might change in time !
  3. @import url(http://www.modelflying.co.uk/CuteEditor_Files/Style/SyntaxHighlighter.css);@import url(/CuteEditor_Files/public_forums.css); Most of the above sounds pretty awful to me, except the bigmac yummy     I'm certainly no veggie but like to think what I eat is killed in a half humane sort of way.   To have a crab served alive just doesn't appeal to me & to be honest I wouldn't know the etiquette for dispatching it  (does one just eat until the poor little soul dies, or is it better to beat it's head in with a spoon first).    I know abbatoirs are not quite the "go to sleep gently" type of place for the victims, but on the whole it must be a better ending than being popped in a frying pan alive.   If my family were hungry, yes i could do it but only in the most humane way possible,    Don't even get me started on the reasons for halal meat production being permitted here !   On my soapbox ??  ...... yeah maybe & prepared to listen to others views.                    Edited By john haz on 23/12/2010 18:20:30
  4. touched by OCD      If only everything in life was as simple as numbers !   Black & white, no grey areas - perfect LOL   All 15 of my models are in a spreadsheet, motors, esc, watts, prop speeds, flying weights & more  ...........  maybe i am more than a little "touched" !  @import url(http://www.modelflying.co.uk/CuteEditor_Files/Style/SyntaxHighlighter.css);@import url(/CuteEditor_Files/public_forums.css);
  5. Sounds good to me MM,  reckon the best way is to do as you say & run a couple of tests   My *problem* is that I like numbers, if it is something that can be calculated, that's a done deal for me, but like so many things with this model lark, it's all dependent on other factors isn't it !   80% of a 1500 =   1200 usable  ....  6 mins = 200 per min   80% of a 2200 =  1760 usable .....  8.8min (@ 200 per min)   so taking a bit of extra weight, i reckon you are spot on @ 8.5 mins   EXCELLENT !!!   Cheers MM,  you have cleared up one of those little mysteries for me & it all makes sense.  i will try it next time i fly, just to see how the theroy adds up i practice   @import url(http://www.modelflying.co.uk/CuteEditor_Files/Style/SyntaxHighlighter.css);@import url(/CuteEditor_Files/public_forums.css);
  6. Cheers MM, interesting stuff   I assumed that the full capacity couldn't be used (flat lipo = dead lipo)  & have never heard of anyone "putting 2200mah back into a 2200mah battery).   I (probably wrongly) assumed that maybe a 2200 battery might only have a usable 1700 and a 1500 maybe only a usable 1200  etc.       If it really is just a maths calculation then that must mean that the 2200 rating is 2200 usable ??
  7. Just wondering how much of a battery's capacity is usable.   I understand the basics of lipo's, mah rating, discharge C rating, charge rates etc but am wondering how much of an advantage a bigger battery is.   F'rinstance ..   If my aircraft flew for 6 mins on a 1500mah battery, how much longer would it fly on a 2200mah  (for the sake of argument, ignoring the additional weight carried).   Assuming both flights were ended when the batteries had dropped to 11v.   I'm fairly certain it isn't as simple as doing the maths  --  360 seconds divided by 1500  *  2200.    I always try to time my flights on both heli's & planes to end when the battery reaches 11v or just under, although I don't think my chargers tell me how many ma I have used.
  8. Your sabre is awesome David, any idea what power you're getting with the screamer & 3 blade fan ?   If mine @ 165w is anywhere near the performance of that, I will ba happy @import url(http://www.modelflying.co.uk/CuteEditor_Files/Style/SyntaxHighlighter.css);@import url(/CuteEditor_Files/public_forums.css);
  9. It's good to hear it might fly nice Tim, can't wait to get it in the air.   I'm just hoping the first launch goes ok, once I get it trimmed & know how to launch / land it, I will be a happy bunny.   I have done the elev - rudder mod, and managed to get it balanced without adding weight (lots of hacking around, the canopy is now removable & the batt sits under it.   I had to evict the weeble from the office but have tinted it black which I prefer   Maybe next week
  10. I think if yours flew as you have shown, I will pop a bit of ballast in the nose & try it.   Would you suggest a level elevator (straight edge along the tailplane & elevator) ?   Obviously I'm edgy about maidening this one, it looks so nice I really don't want to break it first throw.  Pretty confident i can handle it ok in the air IF it's trimmed somewhere near right.   I will ask a friend to adjust the trims in flight for me, then at least if it rolls or pitches, I can hold it under control & he can trim.   Looking forward to flying this one and the sabre with the new setup, just gotta wait for the weather to improve !  @import url(http://www.modelflying.co.uk/CuteEditor_Files/Style/SyntaxHighlighter.css);@import url(/CuteEditor_Files/public_forums.css);
  11. @import url(http://www.modelflying.co.uk/CuteEditor_Files/Style/SyntaxHighlighter.css);@import url(/CuteEditor_Files/public_forums.css); @import url(http://www.modelflying.co.uk/CuteEditor_Files/Style/SyntaxHighlighter.css);@import url(/CuteEditor_Files/public_forums.css); I thought you were a bit quiet this week Tim, assumed you had gone away to see Santa   That mark is interesting, looks a lot further forward than the 23" from the nose I have been reading, but if it works, that's good   Obviously I don't want it too tail heavy, had bad experiences with that in the past, but I also know that hand launching a nose heavy edf isn't too easy .....  sweet spot is what I need !   With the std fan, upgrade motor & a 3S behind the pilot, my cog is about here (black line)      As much as it pains me to do it, i will have to add some weight up front !   Thanks for the help, again       @import url(http://www.modelflying.co.uk/CuteEditor_Files/Style/SyntaxHighlighter.css);@import url(/CuteEditor_Files/public_forums.css);Edited By john haz on 16/12/2010 08:00:24
  12. Job sorted (I hope)   As per my other thread, i butchered a shaft adaptor & made the 6 blade impeller it all fit   All back together & on test I got 360w on a 3 cell 2200 (relocated to a new hatch on top, behind / under the canopy).   Holding it upright it will almost hold it's own weight, so hoping she gets away ok.   COG seems to be on the second moulded line back from the leading edge of the wing (top), I am guessing it's a bit tail heavy at this so may have to add a touch of weight in the unused battery bay.   Tim:  where did you set your COG in the end ??   I saw your message questioning this yourself but not certain what you decided was best in the end ?  @import url(http://www.modelflying.co.uk/CuteEditor_Files/Style/SyntaxHighlighter.css);@import url(/CuteEditor_Files/public_forums.css);
  13. Thanks Dizz.     i have gone square eyed looking over the GC stock but they have no matching shaft & impellers in stock @ 64mm.   Emailed 3 different RC suppliers today to ask & got the grand sum of 0.00 replies   But, I put my thinking head on (difficult when one is terminally stupid) & have sorted it   I had an impeller and shaft for a 2mm motor shaft which was a press fit.   I carefully drilled it out to 3mm & then drilled the sides, tapped them & inserted grub screws.   Spun it up to full power & it seems fine - no vibrations   @import url(http://www.modelflying.co.uk/CuteEditor_Files/Style/SyntaxHighlighter.css);@import url(/CuteEditor_Files/public_forums.css);
  14. Hi Chaps,   I have just fitted the new turnigy motor to my F18 fan housing & it seems almost impossible to find a 4, 5 or 6 bladed fan & adaptor to fit onto the 3mm shaft !!   Anybody know of a good source for EDF fans or completed fan + housing units that might do the job please ???     Don's wicked is the only one that appears to have the bits I need but I really want it quick     Advice appreciated, thanks        @import url(http://www.modelflying.co.uk/CuteEditor_Files/Style/SyntaxHighlighter.css);@import url(/CuteEditor_Files/public_forums.css);
  15. @import url(http://www.modelflying.co.uk/CuteEditor_Files/Style/SyntaxHighlighter.css);@import url(/CuteEditor_Files/public_forums.css); Well, my 4500kv motor arrived today & after sorting out the sabre, I thought it was going to be a 15 min job to get the F18 upgraded.   No, it's never that simple is it   The new motor has a 3mm shaft, I have two shaft adapters for a 3mm shaft, but neither of my impellers work on them   The only one I had that would fit the shaft adap was a 70mm impeller     OK, no problem, i will buy a new impeller, or a different shaft adapter, or maybe even a whole new 64mm fan unit suitable for 3mm ..........  Even that isn't easy unless I wanted to spend silly money on one !   Why can't these things be standardised a bit    It makes prop planes look easy !  @import url(http://www.modelflying.co.uk/CuteEditor_Files/Style/SyntaxHighlighter.css);@import url(/CuteEditor_Files/public_forums.css);Edited By john haz on 13/12/2010 20:46:06
  16. Look forward to your video Steve, it's been a while since i saw my sabre fly (nearly 2 weeks now !).   Finally got it sorted this evening, fitted a 5 blade fan on the 4100kv motor & it's pulling 165w, so hopefully she will have enough power to get away nicely.   Keeping my options open on batteries, Tim got on great with 1250 or 13oo's, David Perry suggested 1000mah, which i will admit fit much easier under the canopy  -  certainly worth a try, if I can get 4-5 mins reasonable flying then it might be better than the much heavier 1300 tipples I have used.  @import url(/CuteEditor_Files/public_forums.css);
  17. I'm taking your word for it  David & will certainly try my 1000 packs on the sabre, adding lightness a Tim says @import url(http://www.modelflying.co.uk/CuteEditor_Files/Style/SyntaxHighlighter.css);@import url(/CuteEditor_Files/public_forums.css);
  18. I ain't gonna win here am I    Maybe I should go slope soaring, no engines to fall out of them  @import url(http://www.modelflying.co.uk/CuteEditor_Files/Style/SyntaxHighlighter.css);@import url(/CuteEditor_Files/public_forums.css);
  19. Excellent stuff, cheers David.   i still can't grasp how it does so well on a 1000mah pack but will try it - anything to reduce weight on the sabre will be a good move (you & Tim both sing the same song about weight, so that's good advice for me ).     Panther --  Mmm maybe a touch above my skill level for now.  i'm pretty confident in the air now & getting ok at low passes, rolls, loops etc but not sure I have enough control during landing to bring that one down properly.     Most of mine will let me shut off fairly early.   The jetiger & Roo like to be flown in a bit further but still fairly easy to land.    Will get my sabre fixed tomorrow & try to get out with that this week, maybe even maiden the F-18, hoping it doesn't end up being too much of a handful !  @import url(http://www.modelflying.co.uk/CuteEditor_Files/Style/SyntaxHighlighter.css);@import url(/CuteEditor_Files/public_forums.css);
  20. Was quite funny to watch BEB, the prop & motor carried on for a few feet & then dived for the ground.   The model behaved a bit strange but it came down in one piece & all I have to do is make a new mount@import url(http://www.modelflying.co.uk/CuteEditor_Files/Style/SyntaxHighlighter.css);@import url(/CuteEditor_Files/public_forums.css);
  21. Posted by Stephen Grigg on 12/12/2010 19:23:44: At least they stay in the model John    I guess the motor mounts are better than the stuff AT supply then  (although I guess they don't reckon on upgraded motors being nailed in    @import url(http://www.modelflying.co.uk/CuteEditor_Files/Style/SyntaxHighlighter.css);@import url(/CuteEditor_Files/public_forums.css);
  22. wrong heading - OK so I'm a clown   Deadstick club ....  Aaawww  be fair lads,  how much closer to deadstick can I get, the motor and mount left the aircraft completely LOL         Don't want one of those sticky, oily, unreliable things just yet,  happy with my lipo's   @import url(http://www.modelflying.co.uk/CuteEditor_Files/Style/SyntaxHighlighter.css);@import url(/CuteEditor_Files/public_forums.css);
  23. Now you have my attention   A sabre and a panther  .........   you might have seen my posts about my alfa sabre, she's now waiting for a new edf / motor to liven her up a bit.     I am interested how you fly it on a 1000mah    has it got the standard alfa 3 blade fan,  what motor etc ?         The panther ....  I have a brand new boxed one sitting here (HK) & only bought it for a later date, but if they really are that good  ....  i'm tempted to pop it together         I have a feeling that the HK panther is the starmax model ?    Interested in anything you have to say about it, or the sabre ........ need more input   @import url(/CuteEditor_Files/public_forums.css);
  24. Excellent days flying today with only one minor mishap on 19 packs.   Roo was excellent as usual & I had a bit of fun with the warbirds.     I Did have a bit of an "issue" with the mustang,  the motor mount disintegrated & the prop, complete with motor, left it @ about 50 feet !!     Got it down without damage, so I'm now in the dead stick club i guess LOL   I really must make a new mount for the mustang, those plastic replacements from art-tech are made of something about as strong as a matchstick !
