    I have a Tiger Moth of similar size with a 26cc petrol two stroke and chinese two outlet Pitts style silencer.   In out of the box state they are useless as a silencer.   I closed off one outlet completely and sleeved the other down to a smaller diameter.

    The  result puts the model into the 'very quiet' category for any ic powered model.  Sure it has lost some top end power but there's still plenty to loop and roll. As it spends most of its time wafting about at low throttle it's a solution that works for me.

    Thanks for the responses guys.  In the light of rocketing balsawood prices, threads like this are just what we need, well - just what builders need.

     

    Ron, I have tried a sample of the Lam film that you sold on, on a section of a scrap wing and been well impressed, but the section I sprayed with cellulose seemed to stick until a few days had passed and then it could be easily scraped off with a fingernail.  I'll order up some primer today and try that.

     

    I found two 150m rolls of lam film on ebay.  Only about a foot wide but £9.99 for the two so it seemed to be a win.  If I find a way to successfully put on a paint finish then between Lam film and Brown Paper / PVA,  I'll never have to use anything else.

    No, I'll be honest and say that I didn't know that plastic primer existed.  My chosen top coat would be Cellulose or 2K automotive paint.  Do you know  which might be compatible??

    Nice models.  I am only just discovering Laminating film following on from Ron G's posts on using and sourcing this material. I had not even considered using it as a base for tissue or other doped covering but I can see the benefits already, not least that it should give a traditional appearance with very strong puncture resistant covering and a good base for paint.  I tried cellulose based paint over matt Lam' film but it doesn't adhere well.

    This works fine with a pumped carb, like a Walbro 

    I have used this set up but if the plug comes out or leaks air the engine stops.  Since then I have avoided any potential interruptions between clunk and carb

    Hi John,

    It was a Topp (German) kit. Foam wings in a warbird are a bit of a nightmare once the large wheel wells  are cut out. In retrospect, built up would have been quicker.  Glass fus is nice - although hard to repair when the inevitable happens.  Haven't weighed it, It balances with no ballast and all the gear right up by the firewall, that's all that matters ?

    It has had several flights before the paint was applied and seem to fly well

    An amazing build!  I love the ethos behind your construction, cheap ply, white foam, brown paper covering, some great ideas which I have stored away for future reference.

    Question, What are you using to veneer the wings??  Doesn't look like obechi - which has become rarer than Unicorn droppings.

    Petrol two strokes and 82db

    I have petrol engines from 17cc to 75cc.  I confess up front to never having used a noise meter but I honestly believe that most would fall into the 'quiet' classification.

     

    All are over propped from the normal recommended sizes.  

    I have two or three fitted with the oriental Pitts style silencers which have two massive outlets.  They have all been modified in house by cutting off and plating over one outlet completely.  The remaining outlet is sleeved down to 10 or 12mm.

     

    This does restrict max rpm and power slightly. Most of my models tend to be scale   but the fighter types will loop with ease and the Moths bimble around beautifully and are super quiet.

     

    It is a case of horses for courses and what balance between power and noise you are willing to settle on.  As an aside, I think that the standard zenoah 23 silencer has 2 x 8mm O/D outlets and the z26 two slightly larger, but compared to what is being supplied with many engines, they are chalk and cheese

    The empty cockpit is a bit of a turn off for me too. 

     

    The Beaufighter featured in Parting Shot isn't the one built by who it says - which will have cheesed off both him and the true builder of the model in the photo

    Hi All

    I have a MPX Royal 9 still on 35meg, which I want to use with a MPX Cockpit TX, linked by a buddy lead. The Royal TX will be the master TX and the Cockpit SX the student TX.  I have the manual for the Royal set but not the Cockpit.

     

    When I use the trainer menu on the Royal it will link up to the Cockpit but somewhere along the line a wierd mix has appeared.  The Throttle/rudder stick works exactly as one would expect   with control being switched by the trainer switch, but the aileron/elevator functions are being mixed in the transfer so aileron control is moving the aileron AND elevator servo and vice versa. The only thing that I can think is that there is a delta mixer in the Cockpit set which is not being over ridden by the master set.

     

    The master set is operating the model as it should

     

    Does anyone have a manual for the Cockpit set available as a file so that I can look for clues? ------ or

     

    Has anyone else encountered a similar situation that can put their finger on the source of the problem??

     

    I've spent nearly three hours this afternoon trying to get it to play nicely but had to admit defeat for the time being.  I haven't found the Cockpit menu particularly intuitive.

     

    As an aside, I have found a tupperware box with around 20 x 35meg receivers inside, 'all deep sixed' 10 years ago.  Most of them are MPX IPD 9 and 12 channel types which never missed a beat.  I also re discovered three Weatronic dual receivers with inbuilt gyro & gps.

     

    I wouldn't use them anywhere but at our home field as frequency control has gone the way of the dinosaurs.  At our home field, (small club) I have no hesitation in returning my trust and putting them to use

    Power is supplied by an OS 91 FX.  I haven't actually weighed it but it should be 'adequate'

     

    Also my first use of HK film.  I dislike Solarfilm intensely, I found it a wrestle to get on and then it always looks tatty after a seasons use.  I found that this film needed a lot more heat than previous films but otherwise it went on well.  It seems well stuck down but time will tell on that score.
