  1. Gentlemen, I am coming to the end of my Oodalally build, my first build, and it has been an adventure. I need one final piece of advice - is there an easy way to get the correct shape of the wind screen or is it a case of drawing and cutting it out free hand?
  2. My son is eight years old and I would like to get him into flying. Can anyone recommend a plane to get him started?
  3. I am fitting pin hinges for the first time and I would appreciate some assistance. 1. Do the tabs require a particular bond preparation, such as scuffing with sandpaper? 2. What glue do you recommend? Unfortunately some of the slots are quite wide and therefore i will require some gap filling. 3. How do you prevent glue sticking the pin section? Some people have spoken about Vaseline, is it a case of smothering it on or is there a technique. any other advice would be appreciated
  4. What is usually used for fuel proofing newly built models. Is wood varnish from the local DIY store ok?
  5. Could someone please remind be what sized spinner is required for the oodalally. I am off to a shop to buy one tomorrow during a visit to the in laws. I am going there direct from work this evening and unfortunately I forgot to make a note of it.
  6. I am currently building my first plane from plans. I need to create the semi- circular leading edge on the elevator and rubber. Is there an easy way to do this or is it a simple case of being careful with a sanding block. any advice would be appreciated
  7. I am in the market for a new reliable, reasonably priced 32 sized glow engine. Advice and recommendations would be appreciated.
  8. Thank you for the replies: SLEC does not list 3/8" x 1.25" trailing edge on their web site but I have emailed them. Also now that I have looked at the plan properly I can understand the need to stagger the undercarriage holes. However I still cannot see how the ribs are placed on the building board and be sure they are all at the same orientation, ie that they are all level and not tipped forward or back because there is only one point of contact with the board. Are you relying on the vertical leading and trailing edge of each rib butting squarely with the sides of the leading and trailing edge strips to set their position.
  9. I am completely new to building, I have not even completed a kit, but I have been looking for a project. From the first, I liked the look of this plane and decided to build. I have cut out most of the parts and starting to assemble but I need some advice. 1. I cannot seem to find any stock of 1.25" x 3/8" trailing edge stock - can anyone advise on a source, I have tried LMS and web searches. 2. The trailing edge spar(made from 1/4 sheet)- am I correct in assuming that the strip is simple cut over wide, such that it can rest on the building board and it is sanded to size and shape after gluing? If this is the case what is the best technique to achieve a good result? 3. People here are suggesting to scatter the under carriage holes- by how much? 4. When assembling the wing ribs, what is the best method for ensure the correct "angle of attack" and therefore make the wing flat- do you just rely on the vertical leading and trailing edges and the corresponding spars to get the positions. Thank you in advance for your help
  10. I have just purchase a Calmato Sport 1400, my first electric model. It mentions in the build instructions to join the two wing halves with tape. Am I correct to say that this should be ignored and that I should bond them with 30minute epoxy? Thank you in advance for your help.
  11. Thank you for the replies. I thought contacting Ripmax directly would be a good idea as I saw the part on their website site. Unfortunately, they do not sell direct (which obviously I can understand as it would undermine their retail customers), they do not have the part in stock, they cannot tell me when any would come in nor could they tell me whether any of the shops they supply to have recently taken delivery of the part, which would have enabled me to chase them.
  12. Due to a landing incident I now need to replace the engine mount on my WOT4. I would like to get the standard, two piece design that comes with the ARTF kit as it fits directly to the airframe and the engine (I believe the Ripmax part no. is Z-CF001/9). Unfortunately the local model shop nor any of the on-line shops I have tried have any. Can anyone advise on who to try?
  13. I am a learner pilot - I have taken my plane up a couple of time with buddy assistance. However, my club has no organised system for teaching new pilots it is just a matter of turning up and hoping someone is around that is willing to buddies. However, I appreciate this eats into time that these people had planned to use for flying and so I would like to reduce the amount of their time I use. Therefore I am considering purchasing a cheap transmitter that I can have available and ready set up for buddying. Can anyone suggest a good option considering that my main transmitter is a Spektrum Dx6i. I was going to go for a Spektrum Dx5 - but I read that there are a lot less features available (i.e servo reversing, expo etc), is the lack of these likely to be a big issue.
  14. I have ordered the slightly larger Irvine mount in case the firewall hole are at the same spacing. But i was going to have a go at filing the one that came with the kit to see if it looked too fragile afterwards
  15. Thank you all for your responses. From research the mount is the Irvine mount which should be suitable for engines size from 30 to 46 - but clearly the Irvine 46 does not fit. Irvine does another larger mount for sizes 46 to 60, which does have the correct post spacing. I will buy one of these to try - but in the meantime does anyone know whether the pre-drilled holes for the firewall mounting are in the same position as for the smaller mount.
