  1. Great suggestion and someone else has had the same, I will take a look, thank you.
  2. I have returned to the hobby after about 10 years away. I have learned to fly a 46 size trainer (Irvine Tutor 40) and can take off, land and do circuits. I want to develop my building skills with something fairly easy in balsa to start with. I have a 15 Thunder tiger engine I used many years ago as a kid, Ideally I would like to build something to match that engine - any recommendations? I confess I am less a 3D flyer and prefer scale or planes that look like aircraft. Any suggestions very welcome. I like the look of the Vintage model company cub (https://www.vintagemodelcompany.com/42-balsa-basics-super-cub-4ch-trainer.html) but I think it is too small for a 15 engine. Its AUW is around 700g. Thank you in advance for any suggestions.
  3. So spent last Saturday cleaning the engine with meths. No rust on the inside but gooey oil and some dirt. Have it a good scrub. Was so enjoying myself I forgot to take pics. Anyway next day went to the club to run her up and she started first time. Ran for a minute or so quite rich then got a another very experienced member to help me tune it up. Then had three flying sessions, not a single missed beat. I confess I was so pleased with it. Thank you everyone for the advice. IMG_8544.MOV
  4. My weekend project. Will do the photos.
  5. Fantastic advice thank you all. I will probably go for meths as I have a large bottle handy. Keen to take it slowly and see how it goes.
  6. That is very encouraging! I must resist my urge to tinker. I will have a go and see what happens. Glad to hear they are tough engines.
  7. I have just bought a trainer from a very kind gentleman who is no longer able to fly models. It has come with an Irvine 46 2 stroke engine. He assured me it was in good running order and It looks in reasonable condition though there are signs of rust on some of the screws. I suspect he hasn’t flown it in a while. I would welcome any recommendation on getting the engine up and running. Should I just whack in some fuel and see if it runs or would you recommend I do some maintenance first. If so what do I need (oil, cleaning agent spares etc.)and how do I go about it.

    Flaps with 6EX

Long overdue update: I did as I described and used channels 5 and six to programme the flaps on my funcub. Much trickier than I had expected as it is frustratingly difficult to get right (both flaps dropping the same/right amount) and to adjust. The flap trim function doesn't seem to impact the slave servo as you would expect. However after much trial and error I got it right. Without servo slow the flaps do snap down so lowering them requires having some height. The fun cub doesn't really need them, it floats along as it is, but it is fun to really slow her down into the wind.  I am contemplating swapping to the three way splitter to simplify things ...  Edward
  9. I have had my Breeze for just over nine months and have flown it regularly. I have the upgraded power set up and with the 1300 battery as far forward as possible to combat the somewhat windy last few months in London it has been brilliant to fly.  Robust, I get 15 minutes plus flights with the throttle around 50% and slightly less if I hammer it. one really hard prang so far and aside from a dented wing tip, nothing to show for it. At full throttle it is quite quick and climbs with aggression.  I am relatively new to the hobby and would not recommend it as a first plane as it is a little too "slippery" but as a second plane it gives you scope to do so much more than with a stable trainer and it is so easy to chuck in the car and go flying.  Only modification i am thinking of making is to put a hatch into it so you don't need to remove the wings every time to swap batteries.

    Flaps with 6EX

Hi,   Sorry for delay in thanking everyone for suggestions - been a long week and it is only wednesday ...   I like the Turnigy 3 way splitter, as I need to reverse the one flap servo and my 6XE has an on off switch for the flap channel ....   Kinda fun to master programming the Tx.
  11. Thanks Tim, that really helps. Any recommendations on a wattmeter or can I just go to Maplins?
  12. Chris, I understand from the excellent guys at Steve Webb that Multiplex are just completely sold out of Fun Cubs and spares hence the additional delays. I acknowledge that parts may be missing as this can happen. What I don't understand is the attitude of Multiplex that I just have to wait for the parts without in some way compensating me for the inconvenience ... and delay. The flying season is now upon us and I will lose at least a month of it ...   This is so different to the excellent service I have had from Horizon and Britflight.  No more whining. I flew my Britlfight Breeze this morning (between showers) and the more I fly it the more I love it. Cheered me up no end.  Edward
  13. Thanks Tim, Have just gone through the beginners guide and got my pen and calculator out. Based on the AUW for the fun cub (1130g) , I need around 250 watts to power the model. From the article that means I need 23.8 amps. (based on 100w/lb)   I have an outrunner motor capable of 350w and 20,000 rpm and a kv of 840 rpm/v (though this doesn't make complete sense if its max RPM is 20,000). I have a 30a ESC. This is the powerset provided BTW.    I also have an 1800 25c 11.1 3s1p lipo. so what I still can't figure out is the best propellor as the provided 13X4 is too big in diameter (according to many reviews). I want to be able to figure out that if I do run an 11X6 prop that I won't destroy the motor and esc ...  What bit am I missing? apologies for being thick ....  Edward

    Flaps with 6EX

I am thinking about how to programme my Multiplex fun cub (when the missing parts finally arrive) for the flaps with my 6EX as follows:   Channel 6 servo for flap 1   Master mixed with channel 5 as slave for servo for flap 2   I wondered if anyone had any thoughts on two questions which have come to mind:   1. does the flap trim function for channel 6 (reducing the throw %) affect the slave channel as well?   2. if I need to mix in some down elevator to compensate for the attitude with flaps down, can I mix the same master channel (6) to the elevator channel?   Any similar experience or thoughts would be welcome. BTW am using y lead for the aileron servos.   cheers   Edward
  15. Thanks Chris, that's really helpful! I must learn more about the power/prop/esc/ battery bit. Re the flaps, my futaba 6 channel only has on or off for flaps so I am going to use the flap trim and start with around 45 degrees and see how it responds and mix down elevator trim if neccesary. Still waiting for the missing parts from multiplex who say it will be another 2 weeks. .... Cheers Edward
  16. I got mine last week - can't wait to start construction but the kit has numerous missing parts that I am waiting for ....   I got the Multiplex power pack - expensive I know but I have been time poor but resource rich ...   I have two questions - I have seen some comments eslewhere around the prop size in the standard setup - 13X4, being too big and regularly results in prop damage and a bent shaft. Any thoughts on a smaller prop that would make sense with the standard power pack ( - Himax C 3516-0840 Brushless Motor MULTIcont BL-30A S-BEC speed controller )1 - 13" x 4 Propeller I just dont understand the calculations you need to do to figure out what would work.   AND when using the flaps, are you mixing in some down elevator to compensate for atittude?   Thanks for any thoughts or advice.   Cheers   Edward
  17. That sounds a good solution. Can you get them from giantcod? Cezary, thanks for the update. My breeze flies very well so far (not much chance to fly it in London at the moment though) Cheers Edward
  18. Thanks BEB and Ross for the suggestions. Never occured to me to use good old super glue ...    Cheers   EGB
  19. Thank you for the warm welcome!  Having started this on my own it is great to know that there's such a great and friendly community to share my experiences with.   I need some advice about threadlock.   I was advised by a very kind modeller at the playing fields to put some on the clevis screws and engine mount grub screws but when I try to buy it online I find a large and diverse range of options.   Any suggestions as which is the right kind to use and where's best to buy it?   Any recommendations very welcome.   EGB
  20. So maidened my Britflight Breeze.  No wind, grey North London day. I was very lucky to find, on arrival at the playing fields, a seasoned modeller who very kindly volunteered to help me out with the throwing/ checking etc.   First flight and she was rolling horribly to the right and heading for the A10 at a cracking pace. The seasoned modeller (Graham)talked me back to the ground without mishap (Thanks Graham I owe you one!) and after a quick check that nothing appeared amiss we relaunched after applying some left trim.  Lots more trim was needed (some down trim too) before getting to smooth and level.  I have the 2822 motor and 3s 1300 pack so lots of power that I didn't explore on this flight.   Just did some careful circuits after that and then a rather fast landing which the Breeze survived without mishap. We checked the ailerons and they looked perfectly trimmed so I must have missed it before take off - despite all the checking I thought I had done.   Anyway battery on charge in the hope of some more flying before my return to work.  Before then I will fix the trim and reduce the rates a bit further (currently 60% on all three channels) as the plane is very sensistive at 50% throttle.   No real pics as my lovely wife didn't come along. Maybe next time.
  21. Thanks for the warm welcome! If the weather holds I will be maddening (that a word?) my breeze shortly. Hopefully will get my better half to take some pics or video and will have a go at posting them.
  22. Thanks BEB   Sorry missed the profile pages - just found them and filled them in.   Have read lots of good things about Britflight and the Breeze in particular and also because their aftersales support is excellent (got a feeling it might be handy early on)   Cheers   EGB
  23. Hi,   Just wnated to say hello. Am not new new to the hobby but not far off.   I Started with a CG Easy Lady that was an easy kit to build and a homemade trainer when I was 13 (back in the 80's).  Trainer crashed more than it flew - I was too far from a club or someone to mentor me.   The Easy lady flew ok till I got my hands on a brushed motor and a huge nicad from my brothers RC car. Then it really  flew!  ... for a bit but the weight was too much .... nothing much left and by then girls held my attention for a number of years.   Have now returned with the opposite situation to my youth - more money but time poor so going for ARTF and electric. Started with an eflite ascent 450 to relearn the gliding ropes - a few bumps and replacements (distributors were excellent) and now have a good glider that I look forward to doing some long flights with this summer.  I got an ST Cessna 182 which has been very good trainer except where I fly the grass is too long in winter and makes the nose wheel buckle so just got a Britflight Breeze (good choice?) which has reminded me how much I enjoyed the building part (I know just sticking in the servos isn't really building) and how much I have to learn about electric.   Look forward to learning more of this the finest of pastimes and hopefully contributing down the line.   Cheers   Edward
  24. Cezary   if you are still around for an update on your Breeze I would be keen to hear it. Just got myself one for Xmas and witing for the weather to fly it. have found a couple of references to the 2822 motor mount issues with the grub screw coming loose - your experience?   Cheers
