  1. Danny, Thanks very much for doing that. Pretty smart work. I found that very interesting. I'm an old time modeller (since about 1950). I can cope with balsa and traditional materials but have big gaps in my knowledge when it comes to tech. Are there programs that will run on a Mac? Are there alternatives to using a plotter? So many more questions. Masks please. Will send pm. Cheers John.
  2. David. Thanks for the paint information. I'll file that away for the future. Really useful. Danny. This is what I'm aiming for. There seems to be no lettering on the wings. I've not yet figured out how to take measurements from the photos. Photoshop is a steep learning curve for me. Cheers John.
  3. Hi folks While waiting for a cowl & canopy to be delivered, I started to make some seats for the cockpit. Danny showed us the way in an earlier post. The method works really well. There is a full seat in the rear cockpit though it's a bit shallow. the pilot in the front gets a ledge above the srvos to perch on. (flying by the seat of your pants?) Danny. Thanks for the offer of stencils. Yes please that would be a big help. Martin. Thanks for your comments & the help re the paint. I think WK608 is light aircraft grey & red rather than silver & fluorescent orange. I emailed Yeovilton to ask if they could provide me with colour references but no reply yet. Your chippie is looking great. Danny & yourself have set the bar pretty high. Cheers John.
  4. Hi folks Not much to show, but the fuselage has been rubbed down & this afternoon I sprayed some primer onto the "metal" areas of the wing. There is still lots to do but I think that I will have to see it fly before I get into too much detailing. There is no great rush to finish this, as long as it's done for the next Greenacres. The next build is a BT Hurricane. I'm keen to get this one started. Danny, I've been thinking about colour schemes. I like the scheme you have chosen & I originally intended to do something similar. I have a friend who flew chipmunks in Leeds UAS in 60's. I have doubts about my abilities to get a good silver finish, also I have found that chippie no 1 (silver solartex) can sometimes be difficult to see. The one that I have my eye on at the moment is the one that flies at Yeovillton. Light grey, red cowl & tail surfaces, white rudder. Google "yeovillton chipmunk" Back to work now. Cheers John
  5. Colin That looks a cracker. Well done. The photos are super. I think we need a plan of this one. Cheers John
  6. Hi folks A bit more progress has been made. The fuselage has been covered with glass & epoxy. This now feels very strong & ding proof. Two coats of primer from a Halfords rattle can. This has added 2 3/4 oz to the weight. I think that is ok. Motor mount & battery box are in place. Next job will be the motor cowling after which it will be possible to assemble a more of less complete model to check out the position of the cg. Cheers John
  7. Hi Danny I was just about to order a cowl & canopy. What is the problem with the traplet canopy? Cheers John.
  8. Hi Danny You are not alone. I'm still plodding along too. This last week I have been glassing the fuselage so there is not very much to post about just now. Still, its moving forward but a long way behind you & Martin. Both models look super. Cheers John
  9. Wow. That's scarey. Glad you are all OK. John
  10. Hi Danny It's amazing how the weight seems to pile on near the end of the build. Still I think that I would be pretty pleased with what you have. My first chippie flies well at 8 lbs. I have just collected all the bits for chippie no 2 & weighed them. The airframe is complete with motor , prop, 6s battery, esc, all servos. Wings & control surfaces are covered in nylon & have had 2 coats of clear dope. Fuselage is ready to be glassed. Not included in the weighing are cowling, cockpit, pilot any detailing, separate rx battery, or paint. It stands now at 6lb 12 oz, Hope this helps. Ah well. Onwards & upwards. Cheers John.
  11. Hi folks Can you tell what it's going to be yet? The nylon covering is done. I enjoyed that. I've not used dope & nylon for 35 years. Wonderful. Just a bit more to do at the front end & then the fuselage can be glassed. Then there is all the detailing to do, but it might get test flown before then. Good luck at the Nats Danny. Cheers John.
  12. Hi folks Well, at last we have a wing. All the basic woodwork is now complete. The final jobs were to install servos & linkages & fit the aileron & flap shrouds. Both quite time consuming jobs. Getting nice tight clearances on the control surfaces without any binding is a fiddly job, but the result is well worth the effort. I've decided to cover the wings & all the open structures with old fashioned dope & nylon. I never seem to get a neat enough finish with any of the heat shrinks. I like to be able to rub down the joints nice & smooth. Fuselage will be glass & epoxy. does anyone know of a local (Nantwich) source for peel ply? Cheers John.
