Tom, re the iron, if you wrap a piece of clean cloth, hankies are ideal if you can find one in this Kleenex age, around the sole of the iron it will keep it mostly clean and mishaps can be carefully cleaned off with some thinners. Alternatively, scrounge around family and friends and you will probably find that someone has an old iron that heats up Ok but doesn't steam or "smells funny" that you can take off their hands. Practice with the heat setting before you use it for real.
