I'm with you Nick. I have a family and not much time!!
I taught myself when i was at school. I tried the traditional IC powered (Ripmax) trainer and crashed on first flight. Then I turned to gliders and bungee launching - a revolation. The bungee meant i didnt have to worry about the take off, the gliding was nice and slow and gave me plenty of time to practice etc. Eventually I blew the dust off the Ripmax trainer and i cant describe the feeling on the very first solo flight !!!
So, if i were you I would be looking for a nice powered glider to start with, a multiplex easy star for instance. Google it, theres tons of info on them (I have one ). With the standard motor they are sedate and with a brushless motor later on the sky is the limit!

I would also go for a "proper" radio to start with, even a cheaper one. it will save you money.
Good luck!
ps there's lots of good stiff on the slow stick (post above), however the easy star or similar will fly in most conditions.
