Hi Alan, Mine is quite simply time (and money). I used to make planes when I was a youngster but I had to give it up when I got married. but my kids are nearly all grown now and I have a little more time on my hands. My wife is disabled and I eventually had to give up working to become her carer. Im still fairly young (I still call mid 40s young :) ) - so I needed to give myself something to do. Well despite my love for my computers you can only do so much with them before you get bored. I told my wife just before Christmas that I wanted to go back to building models - but I wanted to fly them. So as good as she is, she bought me 2 planes for my present - a Flair Cub (which I am building at the moment) - and the Arising Star. And I have to say its great getting back to doing a hobby I enjoyed in my youth. By the way I only ever flew rubber powered things in my youth - I did attempt to fly a glider a few years ago but without a trainer an no knowledge of how to do it - I didnt get far. Funnily I never did crash it and I still have it now. Anyway - Im off to the flying field this moirning so I will catch upu with you all later. Antony
  2. I know the feeling Malcolm - as to receiving the mag - I got it the day this thread was started - my local WH Smiths still dont have it in yet so I consider myself happy :)
  3. Yes - Ive taken a look at Hanger's website now and they look pretty good. I wonder if I can persuade the wife to let me get one? I doubt it though considering what Ive spent in the last few days getting all those last items together that I never had at Christmas - like the 12 volt batter and charger - fuel etc. Still I might if I let her buy a few plants over the next few weeks :)
  4. That would be useful. Maybe they could add it on here for us :)
  5. I know Im still new to this but did I read right? The Hanger 9 Mustang can be used as a trainer? That is what I read from the article by Andy Ellison in this month's mag. He does mention some flying aids - what are they and do they come with the kit? Oh and whazt does the PTS stand for on the mustang?
  6. mine are Beafighter Avro 504 Hurricane
  7. I was just wondering if short kits were available for most plans we see in magazines? As they are not mentioned as to where they can be obtained from I wondered where they would be bought from and how we can find out which ones are available. I know plans are ment to encourage us to have a go ourselves but I kind of see a short kit as a stepping stone - ie - ARTF - kit - short kit - plan - scratch built. (hope folk understand my train of thought).
  8. Ah so thats why I like Futaba? Im a Ford man - Ive driven more Ford cars than any other make - lol
  9. not being an expert but I believe that is at the wing root - ie nearest the fusalage.
  10. Hi Andy. I havent tried fitting the engine yet but Ive taken some measurements and I think I may be just about clear with the carb and the exhaust. If my measurements are accurate then I dont think I will need to cut away the former or the abs moulding. I shall b e taking it out of my arising star in the next day ot two to take measurements and dry fit so I will post more then. As for the stern post I found mine broke rather to easily. So the top section has been glued first to the rear of the tail fin ready to add the hinges and once Ive done that I shall glue the whole assembly in place and see how it looks. If I need to fit a new one altogether then I shall have to first remove the part left at the rear of the fusalage. More later.
  11. Hi Garth, I cant give you the specifics but if you go to the following web address: http://www.kwskodaman.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/ this is the Bromsgrove flying club's site. On there click on the link on the left called "Engine Test Stand" which is near the bottom - it shows a couple of photos of one. It looks as if itsw just been made out of laminated chipboard but it should at least give you some ideas. Though I think its on the large size so something smaller might be more appropriate. Hope that helps
  12. Ive come to the conclusion that the top cowling is a right pain to fit. Despite having soaked it in water and wrapped it around a tin can - it still didnt curv enough to help. But its done now and I can get on with shaping it a little better.
  13. Ive been considering the wing struts. On the instructions it gives a fairly simple method of connecting them to the wings but Im not so sure about their method of securing the lower half using elastic bands. So at themoment Im a little undecided about them.I might see if I can construct something simular for the bottom and the top but I'll decide on that later.
  14. Hi Andy - Have the earlier version of your Thunder Tiger - the GP 40. At present its in an Arising Star but on its maiden test flight last week it ran well so it should be ok for the Cub. How far into the build have you got so far? For me the fusalage is nearly ready to fit the tailplanes and rudder but I need to sort out fitting the hinges first. Main wings are now glued together and the wing tips have been fitted. Once Ive glassed the joint I shall probably cover the wings first.

Danny - fit a pair of skies or even floats :)
  16. first 3d cub? now that sounds fun but somehow I dont think the plane will take to much of it :) As for the size of engines well Ive had a look on my box lid and it gives 3 recomendations as follows: 15 - 40 2st: sport 25 - 40 4st: sport 25 - 35 2 st: trainer So I guess your 52 is just a tad on the overpowered side. Once mine is built I shall stick in my 40 which I have at present in an Arising Star. I think (from my very limited experince) that the 15 you mentioned will make it a very gentle plane for a trainer. The 52 will end up causing a greater risk of having to replace the plane rather quickly.
  17. No matter Timbo - in essence is it not possible to take the main heading that you already have Tom and add subcatagories to them - for instance under the "Begginers" section you could have sub folders for things like questions on trainers - engines - props etc - you know the sort of thing us newbees are always asking. It will give us an oportunity to be more specific about our question and will save us having to trawl through all the posts to find someone has changed the subject part way through and diverted to other topics. Whats already there will just get linked as you have said but it might help us with future topics. Anyway thats my pennys worth. Antony
  18. Myron - from what Ive seen of the Cub the wing holding system of just the elastic bands works fine. I spoke to the chap in the shop where I bought mine from - he flies a Flair Cub and has never had any problems with it. Hope that helps. Antony

Hi Clarky, The servos were very tight so I trimmed a small amount off and put a small curve in to allow the wires to pass through unhindered. But it was just a minimal amount shaved off. Antony

Hi Clarky. I found the Star nice and easy to put together - no real problems and no hidden surprises. As I said earlier when I saw it fly it flew well first time. I found that rewarding and got a nice feeling that Id done the job right.
  21. thanks Bill - I had heard from others it was a little light on the landing if there was any wind. I'll bare that in mind once it gets test flown and tell you how mine performs.
  22. Selwyn - just start a thread with his name in it - that should get his attention
  23. Ok well the plane is underway again. Ive now put the bulk of the fusalage together and it looks a lot straighter.
