  4. I have been planning on a ¼ scale Tiger Moth for some time and had my eyes on the Falcon Models kit, waiting to buy it when ,my bench was empty. Then Falcon Models shut down for a while just as I was ready to buy so I bought a Duncan Hutson kit from Traplet. As soon as Falcon Models started trading again, I bought a kit from Falcon Models and sold on the unstarted DH kit. The Falcon Kit really is an excellent kit, much closer to scale than many of the other ¼ scale kits. Things like the wing aerofoil are very close to scale, which does complicate things as there is less depth to install standard servos like for example the Flair kit. There are also some nice features, such as the cabane struts, which are proper small scale versions of the full ones using spruce with steel ends rather than piano wire with balsa covering.
  5. Ron, Your model is absolutely gorgeous, all I have on mine so far is the beginnings of the fuselage side frames. I am really intrigued by your control mechanism for the ailerons I assume your are going to put scale discs underneath. I had tried to work something out in my head for this and got as far as using some of the service drive robotic gearing, using a bevel gear, but your system may be better. Do you have a single central servo that you connect to the control wires when you attach the wings. Any info would be welcome. Peter.
  6. That is a nice moth to base your model on, look forward to seeing some photos if you can sort them out. See **LINK** for "Spirit of Pashley" being flown (thrown) about, quite amazing.

I believe that a 150 will be ok for the Falcon Moth as it is a lighter model at 15lbs compared to say many Flair Moths that come out at 20lbs where people have seen the benefit of the 180, especially as they would have needed lead up front. The Falcon Moth has several features to make it lighter such as wooden cabane struts rather than heavy gauge piano wire, 1/64" ply turtle decks rather than heavy fiberglass mouldings etc. The Falcon Moth may be less craggy having a thinner wing section closer to scale than the thickened Flair and Traplet Moths.   9. A similar story for me, I was going to buy the kit a couple of years back but kept waiting and then he closed down. I bought a Traplet Hutson kit but as soon as Falcon came back I bought the whole lot. Trevor, I have started, new bench, plans laid out and glued the longerons to the preformed sections. I will see about a build log somewhere on t'net.

Dylan, thanks for compliments, yes I put the blog on RCSB 1st then got into someone else's build log on RCG who did not want time sign up for RCSB so I copied the log over.   13. Seeing your build photos reminded me of building mine a few years ago. It is a lovely flier and you will enjoy it I am sure. Mine has 2 x RCV60 SP engines, well hidden in the cowl, it is my avatar pic. Also attached a couple for interest. You can see my build log at **LINK** Peter.

I see, you have taken the statement literally, it does not mean that the equation for area of a circle is diameter squared but that the area is just a function of diameter and if you are doing a comparison of different circular objects on an area basis you only need work of the square of a characteristic linear dimension, you do not have to calculate the actual area as I showed above.

The area of a circle is also calculated from the formula A = 1/4 π d2 because r = d/2 so r2= 1/4 d2 QED Diameter squared is the important factor as is equally radius squared, I could as easily have stated that. Radius and diameter are linear dimensions, the important factor is square dimensions, when comparing things relatively you do not need to both which it being radius or diameter or even with the pi.   20. Techincally 4 x 50mm fans = 100mm fan because it is the area (diameter sqaured) that is important not the diameter. Additionally, 50mm fans tend to have a relatively larger motor sat in the middle than a 100mm fan, hence more area is obscured and the free flow area of the fan is even less on a proportionate basis.
  21. I did not do anything to my settings, the first time I hit 10% it alarmed. See page 12 of the manual, the txt will alarm at a critical low battery voltage. It appears to be present. I did not have any range issues bringing the plane down. It is as has been stated above, quite a sharp drop off.

Mike, I have run my A9 for a few years now and recently noticed the TX battery voltage was declining after less flying and I got down to 10% the other day and there was not any problem, but as the alarm went off I did land sharpish. I have now bought a new pack, one of the low self discharge NiMH packs of 2500mAh capacity, double the original battery. The only problem is the different plug that the A( uses for the battery, some sellers offer packs with this plug otherwise you need to put your own on the pack or make a conversion lead. Peter.
  23. Did you measure the thrust with the fans in situ (nose down onto some scales for a rough test) as the inlets may well cause some loss in thrust. Even so it will still be well powered even if it does. Some of Chris Golds early EDF planes from 15 years ago flew with 2kg of thrust for a 4.5kg plane on brushed motors and NiCads. Weve never had it so good for EDF. I have some carbon fans that are only 1mm larger in OD and will put out >800g of thrust each on 6S. I am thinking about scaling it up to around 64" (30% larger) to give an all up weight of around 3.6kg (double) for the same thrust:weight ratio. The thrust tubes would then be a little more scale.
