  1.    I did a "dark nights fix up" on an easy pigeon in 2020.  Most of the work was rebuilding a badly damaged and then badly repaired wing section.

Dumping the original power set up saved over a pound in weight!

Brushless motor and controller from a wreaked Multiplex Shark gave plenty of power  [120watt] with original prop. 22OO 3s lipo sat behind the motor under the cockpit canopy, servos and rx under the wing. Flew well, another club member liked it so a trade was done.

PS, had the same experience as Geoff S above with an Electrafly and that darned switch.:classic_ohmy:

  2.   Simon you likely know the full size must have been one of the most marginal aircraft ever, however thought others may be interested in its history.

A take off speed of 260mph was needed to get off the ground.

Expected to be mach 2 capable it was only able to go supersonic in a steep dive, just not enough jet power from engines of the day. [ some thought was given to use rocket power but this did not happen]

Test pilots Bridgeman, Yeagar and Everest found controls to be very sensitive at high speed and sluggish at low speed prompting Everest to say "one of the most difficult aircraft I have ever flown".

Pilot used a lift to enter cockpit from below, sort of Thunderbirds style.

  3.     Formed by James Martin and Captain Valentine Baker Their MB series of development were quite remarkable.

Baker was killed test flying the MB3 when its Napier Saber failed.

The MB5 was a development of the 3 with simplified construction and Griffon engine with the contra prop. Ground crew were complementary as to the ease servicing could be done.

  4.     Just for information.

It is the Dinorwig hydroelectric station at Llanberis that uses excess Nuclear power at night to pump water back up the hill for immediate use when demand surges. Been operational many years. A relation worked there during construction, He said it was a 20 minuet drive into the mountain to the main chamber.

The Trawsfynydd nuclear station is a first generation MAGNOX type that shut down some time ago and is expected to be the first such station to be fully decommissioned.

When that will be is another matter.

I thought that the whole point of the older pylon design was that they were made out of a thin framework which became invisible from a distance. These new ones will be visible from space.

The lattice type pylon takes several days to erect, once again initial cost is the issue like buildings made of RAAC concreate, cheaper in the short term but do not last.

The old pylons have lasted decades, resisting some severe weather happenings and even the odd bomb damage. Will the T up in a day type do the same?

  6.      I have a CL flying friend who never did his prop nuts tight enough I learned, so first thing to check on a model of his.  He just could not bring himself to lean on the nut enough.

Even a 1/4 inch bolt/shaft can take a lot of torque that you will not exceed with the right size spanner in hand.

  7.               In my case it was the only choice living in a very rural spot and the only club in the county at the time had only just formed many miles away. I did join said club years later [still am a member of Haverfordwest model club]

Also, it'd he great if the authorities more actively pursued the idiots on social media who not only flout the law, but encourage and enable others to do the same.

Not only drone flyers but motorbike's racing around housing estates and the ones off roading where they should not. I have been 4x4 off roading [ legally] for nearly 40 years and the action of "don't care idiots has resulted in the loss of places it was fine to go and sadly I see similar happening for legal flyers.

As for policing recon the force would have to be at least twice the size it is now to have any chance.

  9. Hi Andrew, And welcome. Can't comment on the Bigfoot as not come across one.

For a new flyer I say get some assistance to learn to fly, join a club or find someone to assist and give guidance.

Speaking as a self taught RC flyer some 45 years ago its a hard road that takes determination even having had previous experience of free flight and control line models.

  10.         With models of this size I recon it is good to have suspension in the way of the full size to dampen bounce on landing.

Axle can travel up and back some in a loop on the rear leg. Bungee cord around a pin on front leg holds axle down in place but stretch's to absorb shock on landing.

On one occasion at Billing Lake near Northampton many years ago, I was flying my favourite waterplane of the time, an ARC Cessna Cardinal. The ARC range are sadly discontinued now but in many ways they were perfect for waterplane flying as they were moulded from plastic (ABS, I think). All the models in the range (Ready, Beaver, Jupiter, etc) shared the same float set but with different fittings for mounting and have been quite popular over the years. They were slightly heavier than the equivalent built-up models but that was not really a problem; well, most of the time.

Boddo wandered over to look at the Cessna and told me that he had recently been flying one for a magazine review. He further went on to ask me if I had tried spinning and, as I hadn't, he suggested I try it as it was "interesting". So on the next flight, I took the model up a couple of hundred feet, throttled back and started feeding in up elevator. As the model slowed I pushed both sticks across and the model dropped into a perfectly-developed spin. After a few turns, and with the lake fast approaching, I let go of the sticks, expecting the Cessna to recover just like all my other models would do. I was surprised to see it carry on spinning, so I quickly put in opposite rudder and aileron, at which point it rapidly flicked into a spin in the other direction. I was by then in full panic mode and desperately banging the sticks into the corners in a vain attempt to recover but, to no avail, as the Cessna hit the water with a splash.

Boddo, standing behind me, guffawed with laughter and said "I told you it was interesting, didn't I?"

I still fly an ARC Jupiter and it too will stay in a spin until some opposit rudder is fed in. Having the extra mass of the floats probably did not help.

The Messerschmitt reverse was selected by switching the engine off and pushing the key and barrel in to a stop then twisting it to start,  the engine would then run backwards giving 4 reverse speeds. Never tried it honest.

I have an original Messerschmitt-cabin-Scooter as it was called owners manual.

Some interesting instructions were given, some quite comical.

Quote, Sharp sudden braking can cause a skid on wet slippery roads. However do not be afraid to use the brakes, a new set of linings is cheaper than a trip to hospital.

Winer running, Freezing of the hood lock can be discouraged by the application of some glycerine, however should it freeze application of a flame from your cigarette lighter or match will free it

Seizure, If engine no longer pulls well and no longer responds to throttle or only slightly it the accelerator and the sound of the engine is different and amounts to scraping noises in the next two or three seconds the engine will stop. The danger now is rear wheel will lock and cause a skid turn sideways and possibly turn over.

To avoid this put your foot on the clutch and off accelerator and let the vehicle roll to a stop at the side of the road and switch off your engine and wait until you have smoked a cigarette.

You can then continue your drive taking care not to let the engine rev too hard at first.

I kid you not, all from the manual!!!   Max speed in book 62mph and milage 80mpg.

Only first gear was available in reverse [ if system was adjusted correctly]

      Things sure have changed.
