  1. Hey matthew im Angus and im 16. Bin flyin since about eleven on and off. I used to fly gliders with my dad a lot in the hills. (I live in scotland) No club or training just chucked it hoped for the best : ) I went through times where i didnt fly for ages, usualy due to a crash. But now I have started flying powered at a local club with a proper instructer and my flying has vastly improved. I recently gained my bronze award. (Equivilent to A certificate) So you are doing the right thing by joining a club. Im currently building a db sport and scale piper cub which is 1/5 scale so is quite big! It will be my first scale model. I recommend building as it is great fun and really rewarding! Good luck with the hobby! Im sure you will become addicted like me!
  2. The reason I dont like electric motors is that they don't make nearly as nice a sound as a good ic four stroke. But still not as nice as a merlin...

    Hey Andrew I don't know if your interested in scale models but I am building a 1/5scale dbsportandscale J3 Piper Cub, a real classic aeromodellers plane which certainly isnt ugly! It comes with precut parts and is built over a plan. It is my first build and I have been told im doing a good job. Im putting an sc 70 4 stroke in the nose so it should sound quite nice :) Aparently it will be only slightly more difficult to fly than a trainer. Go to dbsportandscale.com if you want to have a look, Ill keep you posted on its progress and tell you how it flies.

    Stay with planes! Stay with planes! Dont go to the dark side!!!... No seriously helicopters are realy expencive and they are much harder to learn to fly. There is a guy at my club who bought an elactric heli. He has spent more money repairing it than he spent on it in the first place.
  5. Its the speed air that has the tricycle undercarrage. Yeh the super air does look nice. Ill have to earn some money first...
  6. Ok Ill probably take your advice flytilbroke and buy either a super or travel air. But whats the diference between them?
  7. So are the only differences in scale between your spit timbo and a true scale, the wing shape and the size of the tailplane?

  9. I am posting this thread because I need some advice. I have just completed my SAA bronze award and I am interested in flying scale models. I used a tutor 40 for my bronze and I am currently building a 1/5 scale, db piper cub, so I do like building from scratch. I am looking for a low winged aeroplane which will be suitable for a me. I dont realy like the sport low wing trainers. I'd love a spitfire but ive been told by so many people that they will tip stall and are difficult to fly. So whats the next best thing?

    Hi folks. Good news! I passed my bronze saa test (equivilant to english A test) It was a special training day at my club where the senior membors of the saa came to instruct begginers and test those who are ready for the bronze silver and gold levels. I asked an instructor if he could watch me do my bronze routine and give me some pointers and advice. So I fueled up and ran through the standard procedures and flew the routine. afterwards he asked me a few questions, shook my hand and said that I had passed! I wasnt expecting that! He said to me that its best to test people when they do not realise that they are being tested. It certainely worked for me, It meant that I wasnt nervous at all!
  11. yea it seems silly converting to electric when you spent the money on the engines in the first place + ic sounds so much better :)

    yeh i would fly my glider if it was flyable. It has a broken wing and im having difficulty finding somewhere to send me a replacement. Anyway i have been having fun building my db sport and scale piper cub on rainy/windy days

  14. I am a junior membor of a model flying club in scotland that has around 30 members I think, and there are only 3 junior members, one of which I encouraged to join.
  15. I thought this thread would be a great place for people to share all the stupid things they have done whilst flying! I went down to the flying field this thursday with my trainer 40 and the weather was crackin with only a light breeze. Its only been a little while since I went solo so I was a bit nervous. I fueled up and did all the checks and had a good flight and a good landing and I was realy chuffed. So I decided to go up again. I thought everything was fine and working, I took off and a few seconds later the plane went into a really steep climb and I shouted I have lost controll!!! Then I heard another shout from behind me from the pitts saying my areil was down. I managed to pull it out and keep the plane in the air...barely. of cource the engine had cut and I was quite low, so I glided it around in a circle trying to line up into the wind but i was too low and when i landed I was heading rite into the pitt area! They all ran out the way and I just mist everyone and the equipment. I slowed down and cutt the throttle. The rest of the blokes all laughed at me and thought it was seriously funny! I didnt. I could have kicked myself for being a right idiot. Then after a bit I decided to go up again making sure that i had extended my areal fully. and you thought I had a bad day already! when the plane took off I had no aileron controll!!! Of course I had forgotten to connect the aileron servo lead back into the reciever!!! What an Idiot I was. I shouted to the instructer and he hobbled over and took the transmitter from me and landed the model using the rudder. Well there you have it, two stupid and potentially dangerous mistakes in one day! I think I qualify for muppet of the week this week. Please tell me im not the only one who makes stupid mistakes like this!

    I had a look at simulators myself and the good ones cost around £100 pounds which i think just isn't worth it. Luckily there is a pc with a simulator at the club hut i go to.

    Hey people i managed to get down to the flying field on saturday for my second flight with my tutor 40. The wind was a bit stronger than last time i was there.So I took off and the instructor showed me the complete bronze flight. I had a go at the manouvers and the instructer said i was doing good so i then had to land. when coming in for landing i cut the throttle a little too soon and because the wind was stronger the plane slowed down quicker and the result was the plane landed quite hard mainly on its nose wheel. I checked the plane over and it was fine, I just bent the nose wheel back again and I went up for a second flight. I had a bit of fun and did some rolls and loops and things which was cool and then practiced my landings. They were much better than my first attempt and I landed it again and fueled up. One good thing I have noticed with the tutor 40 is that it comes with a really big tank and coupled with an irvine .46 which im told is quite fuel efficient, I have around 40 minutes of flying time! Reluctantly I gave the transmitter over to my dad who wanted a go. For most of the flight I could'nt watch because he was getting the plane into all sorts of wierd attitudes and the instructer had to take controll numerours times! Anyway the instructor landed it and let my dad take off again after a refuel. But just after the plane took off the engine spluttered and died for no apparent reason! It was at a height of only about 5 meters and the instructer took controll and managed to land it before it went into the scrub and the end of the strip. The result was a bent nose wheel again so that was straitened up. I have no idea why the engine failed so I am just hoping that it wont happen again! After that the instructer decided that i should go solo because he thought i was confident enough! It was a bit disconcerting not having the instructer next to me but I just did what I did on the simulator and a few rough landings and bent nose wheels later it was time to head home...aawww!!. I was really chuffed going solo on my second flight and again I will say: use a simulator! It really helps!

    I managed to get down to the patch today and I gave my tutor 40 to my instructer to give it its first flight! It turned out that it was badly out of trim and it was droping the nose and banking to the left considerably so he altered the trim and it flew realy well. He let me have controll and it was just like the simulator. I flew figures of eight, circuits and some square circuits. My glider experience really helped and i had a confidence boost by being on the buddy system. My instructor was very encouraging and he tought me to roll and loop in the first few flights which was awsome! In the last few flights he got me to do some low passes to practice landing run ups. After a few of them he said I was doing so well that he reccommended that i landed myself! I was realy surprised because so many people had told me not to expect to land on your first time at the field. But i gave it a go and on the second attempt i landed! It was a bit of a bouncer but it was a landing none the less! The instructer said that it wouldent be long untill i couild try for my bronze certificate. I think the thing that helped me the most was the time I spent on the simulator in the club house. I would recommend anyone to get some practice on one before they fly for real. Im sure thats why i had such a good few flights.
