  1. Hmm.... my photos disappeared. I’ll fix it Monday when I’m on a big computer. Joe
  2. Hi Jon, I thought I’d post a shot of the “test fit of the 300v into an ESM Mig 3 cowl. Kinda sorta.... From what I can tell the 300v is very close to not needing any cutting for clearance of the jugs. I took the Mig cowl and very carefully put it as far back on my Storch as I could I till it hit the front of the canopy which is really saying something when you consider how long and narrow the Storch nose is with the 300v hanging on there. The end of the 300v prop shaft just lined up with the front edge of the Mig cowl so I had to center the engine within the cowl to see the clearance and it looks like there will be no cutting for the jugs. It does tapper but it looks to clear. It doesn’t look like there is an extra 12mm in there to fit the 360v.... But I’ll measure more when I start ordering parts this summer. It should be awesome with either engine Joe Do you think my Russian Storch would be ok at a scale event? lol
  3. Very interesting to read the last few pages. While I know Jon must get tired of what feels like repeating it is a great help and insight into the Laser way of doing things. As the only Laser owner in our club I have to fend off all the old needle twisters and let them tell me how I'm doing it wrong.... I've gotten so I just agree verbally with them and do what Jon tells me. I've used this thread as a resource to bring one of our engine gurus up to speed and all things Laser and he and I keep the others at bay. Since Walt is a known top notch engine tuner at the field in real life. Other flyers don't bother me now. They see Walt backing me up and leave me alone. When they ask me I just say " the more I follow the directions, the better the 300v runs.... Imagine that !!" Thanks to this thread (and my La5 with a 300v) I have other guys in our club looking at getting Lasers. I even ordered an ESM Mig 3 today since ESM is quitting production with no return in sight at this time. Now we have two Mig 3's here waiting for a build next fall. Probably 300v's maybe 360's if it fit.... This thread is by far the best Laser resource there is out there. Keep up the great work.   Joe     Edited By Joespeeder on 12/12/2017 21:50:24
  4.   Hey Jon, I’d campaign for a 60cc inline all day long I’d like to spin bigger or multi blade props in a 50 sized model Mark me down for buying a twin over a single as my first choice. I love the way multi cylinders sound and my Lasers are awesome. If I’m building a cool aircraft I look for power that is awesome sounding as much as how it fits. I cringe every time I see a really nice aircraft fire up and it sounds like someone’s cutting the grass.... Gotten so I turn those videos off 90% of the time. I’d buy the twin inline or v before the single everyday of the week. Unless it sticks out of the cowl. Then I have to really look at it. Joe   Maybe prop spacers to move the prop further from the cylinders for some projects? Kolm has various lengths to space the cylinders further back in the airframe to help the engines fit.   Edited By Joespeeder on 15/11/2017 22:03:08 Edited By Joespeeder on 15/11/2017 22:08:18
  5. Hey Geoff, If it’s the plane I’ve seen online then it’s an OS 4 cylinder 4 stoke inline. Very cool engine, however, Os says not to run it inverted. That really limits the airframes you can use it in. The 300v fits in ESM spits and Me-190 except you have to cut the cowl. If I could fit a 60cc into an inline airframe and get the Laser sound and performance without cutting the cowl it would open up a lot of airframes available to build. Lasers are jewels and I’d love to be able to fit an inline into the various airframes that are not round nosed. I’ll leave it to you guys to argue about fuel. I like glow or glow CDI. But I’d be giddy just to get an angry sounding 60cc inline. It would open a part of the market that has missed out of cool 4stroke noises. Joe
  6. Hey Jon, When looking at projects there is a hole in offerings for the narrow cowl 80in ws class of planes. Kolm offers the inlines in the 100cc + sizes and Roto has an 85cc inline. But there are no 50-60cc inlines in 4 stroke. Love to see that size class inline with a cam timing that makes it growl... lol. I like CDI glow but a standard glow or gas is cool as long as it would fill that void. Lots of ESM or other Spits, P-51, or Mig 3’s out there. No one else is in that part of the market and while I’m all in for a radial Saito is filling that segment at LHS’s. The 60cc in-line would be uniqinand awesome !! Joe
  7. Hi Jon, Due to this thread, I went looking for Aspen Fuel here in the US. I couldn't find it, If there a US source for Aspen that you know of you might include a link or other info. How about TruFuel for your US customers ? Would this be similar to Aspen ?   LINKY   Joe Edited By Joespeeder on 02/08/2017 16:48:27
  8. Hey Jon, Anyone mixing down something like CoolPower 20/20 to 10/10 by adding Methonal? I like my home mix But I've had several guys ask if I could do that. Joe
  9. Thanks Timothy!! I just got back from the field were we tuned my LA5 and it's running the best it ever has !! I'm really happy as Jon would say "chuffed" Funny, the more I follow his directions and take the time to do things as described the better it runs and that wonderful Laser/Harley sound comes to life !! I am now on 10%nitro 10%Oil mixed by me using Technoplate oil. I removed the Glow driver from the plugs and trusted Jons instructions that I didn't need it. Very hard for me to do that as I really really don't like dead sticks. Our field is surrounded by trees and you drop in on a 600ft runway. But if things go bad your climbing a tree to get your plane or trying to stay away from poison ivy. Yuk.... So I had a Glow driver, once we took it off and with proper fuel the 300v became a very easy and wonderful engine!! Imagine that.... the more you follow direction the better it runs. Who knew !!! Combine that with all the usual guys trying to tell me what to do cause it works on a Saito not being there today and it was the sweet sound of success Laser Style. I think I created a sale of a 360v that a good friend now wants for this fall !! The Storch will be easy now !! I was getting 8,300rpm on a fila 20x8. Now Jon says he ran a 20x10 on his La7. I was thinking you ran a 20x8 Menz. I think I'll do more flying on the 20x8 for now but if you're runnng the 10 and getting cool noises when backing off on the down line. I'll change later to do the same. Thanks again Jon. Can't wait to do some glider towing with the 300v Storch !! Oh BTW, the Rcats Glow driver I just picked up is awesome! Slow ramp up for YS engines, up to 5amps power, and shows you how much is being pulled, auto shut off, and a Li ion battery that some report has lasted an entire season on one charge! I used a Sullivan Twin Remote glow and the rcats igniter powered both plugs easily. By reading the meter you can tell if both plugs are good. I got the Orange case and it's great to keep from loosing it and seeing it at the field. http://rcatsystems.com/rc.php
  10. Thanks Guys, You can see the rear seater on the job here... lol LINKY I hope to fly next week. I just took balance measurements yesterday. The Storch is weird and I'm going slow. Any news on CDI or other projects ? Joe
  11. Hey Jon, Sounds like you're on a good path. There have been others that have gotten caught in the expected delivery trap. It creates expectations and pressure at both ends. Like 99% of your customers I understand totally. You've always gone way out of your way to help both on the forums and when I've needed any help. Generally, rude people live their lives in that state.... Don't let it get to you. They are more miserable then those around them and everyone else can leave. lol... They live in that frame of mind. I used to be shocked how a customer would be so extremely rude over the phone or by email then change into the sweetest person when they came into my office. We even had a customer bring my staff flowers he had been so rude and he felt like an "arse". Thanks for all your help and keep doing cool things !! Now, just cause I want to show off.... Here are some initial pics of my Storch with it's new 300v !! The 300v fits perfectly but with no room to spare and should make towing sailplanes simple! Maiden soon, then more pics. My pilot is a retired HE-111 driver and his crew owned the largest toy mfg in Germany before the war !!! I have my doubts about them seeing anything.... lol Joe
  12.   Thanks Guys!!! As I've told Jon several times when figuring out a new part of the Laser Experience you have to go slow, I was a business major.... lol I hear each of you and will be using your advise. I bought 3 gallons of Methanol to start and will mix to a total of 1 gallon, or I think my shoes might get wet. 😜 Good measuing cups and doing it in ml is a must also, you're correct I'm in the US and just default to gallons/oz's right away as I think about things. It's  You guys confirmed my thought. Over here, Lasers are very rare and I know of one other engine than use to fly at a field an hour and a half away. He loves it. Except, that owner moved from Michigan to Airizona last fall. So that engine is now 1,600miles away. I'm sure there are many other Laser flyers near but I seem to be they only guy I seee regularly at the field with one. So when people ask me or try to help I get a lot of good meaning knob twisters or strange looks that take me down the wrong path if I let them. The oil question really was to "battle" the pit chatter simply. When I say I'm running 10% oil you should see/hear the gurus chatter. The good ones at some point will say that's what the old larger Super Tigers took but they still look at me like they are saying "are you sure?". I smile, nod, and go about my business. But now if I tell them I'm running a 10:1 mix and that 20:1 is being tested it should stop them in their tracks as they translate that in their heads. So many are use to 20:1 being LOTS of oil for a Saito gasser or a slobbering amount for a gas 2 stroke. The sharp guys will know right away that 10:1 is 10% but since they run lots of gas it'll take them a minute before commenting. I do sports car stuff as another hobby. I always get asked how fast do you go by people trying to relate to the experience. I learned years ago no matter what track they are asking about to just say 160mph. It's the speed they believe you and it's faster than most have ever gone on a public highway. They smile, seem happy and go on. If I say less they always comment they go that fast on the way to work. If they ask lap times they get a real answer. So at the flying field I'm going to say I'm running 10:1 let's see how many say that's only 10%.... lol At least they'll have to think about it. Jon answered the question about the path of the fuel through the engine. That's the bit I was missing as far as lubrication. While this thread is about what's wanted, the questions have lead to a lot of answers about why things are done and back stories that fill in a lot of information about the Laser experience. Thanks for all the great help! I'll find a spot here to post my Storch and La5 after I finish the Storch. Both are running a 300v and I have a 120 in a VQ Hurricane. Since it's almost May 4th, I'll kick my dead TaunTaun and hope for an inline 50-60cc someday. lol. 13. Hey Jon, I hope this is on topic as I'm about to mix some glow fuel. In your following your posts about oil mixes and cleanliness got me wondering... which is a very dangerous thing. First, let me say I plan to mix my glow to 10% oil unless you tell me different. In mixing gasoline fuel I see lots of ratios from 20:1 as spec'd by Saito to 40:1 for the standard 2 stroke gasser. Some flyers mix to 50:1... I never have gone to the 50:1 extreme. CDI glow to gas conversations typically mix to 20:1 as a standard. Typical off the shelf Glow fuels are in the 17% range with 30%Nitro Heli fuels are in the 20%oil range. Does Methonal need more oil per volume then Gasoline? At 20:1 a heavily oiled glow to gas conversion gas mix is only 6.4oz of oil. Where as 10% oil glow mix is 12.8oz. Is this how you're getting to 6.4oz per gallon in your testing to get to the 5% spec? I'm going to mix to the 10% spec until you tell me it's time to change. I'm just wondering if different base fuels require different oil levels. I'll let others argue about what's needed in each engine and what they run. I'm just wondering if an engine requires a certain amount of oil per gallon of base fuel is there a difference due to the fuel? Joe
  14.   Hey Jon, Wow, didn't mean to stir up a hornets nest. The 180 gas is the engine of choice as the next offering as it's where the market is and as I mentioned I have friend here asking for a gas Laser when they see mine. Personally, I like glow. As far as inline or multi cylinder I have both the Saito 100ti and the OS 320 4 cylinder. The Saito is too small for me as I needed a small package for a tight nose and it's all that was available. I run it on 30% and it requires a scale takeoff allowing the plane to get up on step before that first turn. The OS 320 I'm running on Glow CDI with a small carb mod and header from Ray English. It's a very cool engine and the right solution for the project. However the Saito 60cc R3 is showing about 300-400 more rpm after its run in. My 320 may get there after a bunch of running. Many gallons. In the 50-60cc space I'd love to see a great inline and for the 60sized a 20cc inline. The smaller engines are cool but as mentioned more of boutique items. To be fair, even 60 sized warbird ARFs are getting more rare lately. But the Giant Scale Inline is really what I'd love to see. Talk to you soon. Thanks for the parts! Flying season is just starting and the Storch should be ready soon. Joe Edited By Joespeeder on 28/04/2017 13:19:37
  15. Hey Jon, I have a buddy over here that would love a 180 gas. I'm still campaigning for inline versions of the 300 or 360..... lol... or a 20cc inline😜 Hope all of these will be available soon!! 👍 Joe
  16.   Hey Jon, As far a name goes Black Laser is simple, very cool, and as far as I know creating a black laser is impossible since lasers are made up of light and the color black is the absence of all color. But I was a business major so I could be wrong.... lol Maybe Black Laser or "The Black Laser"..... or to borrow from the previous posts "Midnight Laser" is cool or "The Midnight Laser"..... Joe Edited By Joespeeder on 26/01/2017 13:29:21 Edited By Joespeeder on 26/01/2017 13:32:42
  17. Hi Jon, Would this finish be optional at the time of ordering a new engine, the new standard for all engines, or done as batches with some all natural ? I like the looks of it. Joe
  18. Hey Jon, As you're aware, I hate the smell of gas. Mainly in the shop, in my other hobbies I enjoy it but not when modeling. As far as a gas or glow option that's user selectable you could do a CDI glow as an option. We've been playing with some Saitos with CDI and having great fun. Lower fuel usage, more power, and no glow kick back on the big singles. Of course Laser would benifit less due them not kicking back currently. Glow just smells better... lol BTW, Col Klink will arrive tomorrow as my Storch pilot. Lol he mentions being in his beloved He-111 again in one episode so I figure he'd enjoy the Storch. Joe
  19. Count me in for a radial Jon..... It's cold here, I was deathly sick, and now I'm care giving for my mother but getting some time to model. The Storch 300v build is starting. I'm still waiting for the Super T from the LHS. Looks like I may buy it direct next year or mix my own fuel. I'll keep you updated on that part. 3 cylinders would be great. When you get to that point (hint hint) be sure to get us dimensions early so we can choose airframes that might do it justice. Joe
  20. Hi Jon, Very cool !! Would love to see you put a 15x8x3 on there. Do you think you'd get 7,200-7,300rpm ? What's the crank center-line to top of the valve cover measurement on the 120 long stroke? Great work ! Joe
