  1. Thanks for the advice guys. Really helpful. Ads
  2. Anyone built the Triple Threat 2 from the free plan in RCME. I've finished all the balsa bashing (almost) - still a bit to do with the pylon - been good fun so far. Would like to hear from anyone whose finished it. Any photos ?
  3. being a novice with electric I am trying to get my first set up sorted out. My ESC has pre fitted 2mm cage connectors. I've bought some extra ones for the battery and the motor but worry they look too fine and are also very narrow for the wire I am intending soldeing them to. Ive also bought some 4mm connectors which Im a bit happier with. Is it an option to solder the 4mm commentors direct to the 2mm ones or should I simply strip the 2mm ones off and solder direct onto the fresh wire. Also a little advice about the best way to solder the wire onto the connector would be useful as would some clear direction about what type of heat is best to fit the heat shrink tubing - hair dryer or iron ?
  4. Thanks guys,  Great help. In answer to your question David, the battery is a 1200mAh. In terms of the connections, its a bit of a mixed bag. The ESC comes with 2mm caged connectors (fitted), while motor has 4mm (separate) and the battery doesn't have any.  But having clarified things i will probably go with the 2mm connectors on everything as they are already set up on the ESC. As to the female connection on my charger Timbo, the web link you gave put me straight onto the peice of kit I need i.e. the small male connector linked to two 2mm connections. Once again thanks guys. Very much appreciated.
  5. Im on my first foray into electric flight, building the Triple Threat from the last RCM&E. Great fun but have ground to bit of a halt with the electrics. On retailers advice have bought a Flightpower EVO25 3s LiPo with a Xtra 2890/10 motor and a KMS 18amp ESC. He has then supplied me with a Pro-Peak QUATTRO LiPo charger. What is not clear from the instructions is how to connect the battery and charger. The battery has a red and black wire and also a small female socket that connects three red and one black thinner wires. There is no obvious compatability with the charger. The charger has two clips (I presume to go onto a 12 v battery and small female connector socket with a red and black wire going into it. Any ideas.  Equally how do i know when its charged and is it ok to use the car battery without causing any problems as I have yet to get a separate 12v battery.  Any advice welcome.
  6. I've just finished my first "from plan" rc plane, having been a balsa basher as a kid, building things like the Keil Kraft Cadet/Pioneer and the like, but nothing more complicated than rubber power. To get back into it I got a set of plans off E-bay which came with a build article. The plane and article relate to a 40" high wing vintage trainer for a size 15 engine by Mire Wray published in RCME. What a complete pleasure it has been to build. Granted, with he need to buy tools and those little bits of kit the plane has cost me a small fortune, but it has been both challenging and rewarding, such that I have already got the plans for builds 2 and 3 - a 50" Antonov AN 2 and a if that goes to plan a Mk 22 Dennis Bryant Spitfire. While a night class would be useful, I have found that on each occasion where I have become unsure of how to progress, a quick post on this site and I've had my query sorted. Best advice I had at the begining was not to bite off more than you can chew, thereby avoiding the half built pile of balsa which you promise yourself you will finish later.
  7. Arrived yesterday. what a good laugh. Daughter's better at it that me and mananged to land it on the wife's head during coronation street. The cat's slightly less convinced about it, seems to think it's the ghost of his last avian victim. Good to see him getting his just deserts.
  8. I am now down to the last couple of jobs to finish my project. I've been putting off the undercarriage because I'm not sure how to finish it. Basically my plans detail a u/c made up two preformed wire patterns (14 and 12g) wire which need joining just above what acts as the axle. This involves joining the two wire patterns with a 20mm overlap. What i'm not clear on is the best way to do this. I'd thought about binding with suitable wire and then soldering. I would be grateful of some clear advice about the best way to create a strong and effective bond without buying a mig welder (only joking). Please assume I know nothing about this, which to be fair, is not far off the mark. Regards Ads.
  9. After spending the obligatory half an hour looking at model related web sites. Just dropped onto the idea of silencer extensions. I was planning to cant my engine instalation to distance the silencer from the body. While this would have been O.K. it was not a perfect solution. Then I've seen the extention idea. I'm looking to fit an OS 15 FP which comes with the 871 silencer. Apparently an extention is available which gives a further 11.5mm of clearance, which in my case would appear ideal. Has anyone used these and if they are good as they appear anyone suggest the best place to get one, as my local model supplier only stock SC kit now. Regards Ads.
  10. I've just picked up an OS 15 of e-bay and have ordered an 8x4 prop for it, but I'm not sure what size spinner would be the right match. The engine is going into a 40" span vintage trainer. Any advice please? Ads.
  11. I'm all for supporting model shops and suppliers, after all, where would be without them? However, charging over a pound for a half a dozen small screws or four bolts is to be frank a complete rip off. We have a small hardware shop close to home, a bit of an Alladin's cave, and he's stocking similar items at 3p each, and he's still making money. What I'm going to ask about is stocking the really small stuff and see what he can do. Does anyone know of any other decent supplier who distributes small screws and nuts and bolts where I could buy them in the 100s. I'd much rather pay £5.00 and get a box full then feeling i'm having my pockets emptied every time I need a set of bolts. Ads.
  12. I've gone for dark red fuselage and elevator with white wings/tail. Only half done so far but looks quite good. I've opted for micro servos which have gone in fine. Actually leaves plenty of room. I originally bought an SC 25 having been takled into it by the model shop, even though the article recommends 10 or 15. Anyway, I have decided to stick with the plan and have managed to pick up a new OS 15 on E-bay for a decent price. Just waiting for it to arrive, then I can get the final bits done. I'll definately get it photoed and posted on here when its done. Ads
  13. Nice one Myron. I've got a few days left on mine. Need to sort out the undercarriage and then sort out the engine mount a cowl. I'll get it photograped when its done and try and post it on here.
  14. Having spent ages on the net looking for the next project/plans I am thinking about a scale spitfire of decent size, perhaps 60" span. Can anyone suggest the best source/location of good quality plans. I've seen the Bryant ones on the American site and if they are the best ones. I could stand paying the £20 or so to get them. However, just worried there may be better plans/articles out there.
