  1. It is a shame to hear of another shop closing. Bit like when pub closes. Everybody moans, but half of them never used it. I wonder if perhaps we have not also helped by shooting ourselves in the foot. When I first started modelling there were kits, balsa and a few parts. Mostly it was free flight, rubber powered or IC. With of course control line. Very little R/C if there was it was one click for left and two clicks for right. Now we have a mass of stuff. Balsa kits, ARTF, RTF, IC, Electric, and of course pylon control line and a plethora of other things. This is just in the airplane world. Then of course there is the sailing/boating world. Model railways, steam engines. The list goes on and on. The poor old model shop now has to try and cater for all of this, with the added competition of online against him. So where does he make his money with a small fortune tied up in stock, possibly on an overdraft, that he hopes he can sell. That and business rates rent etc. Not easy and you can understand why some just give up. Edited By nigel newby on 10/12/2018 01:26:39
  2. Yeah, so am I Percy. Just ordered 20 1 1/4 inch 4ba bolts on ebay for £4.50 including postage. They will always be handy, as I have other engines that will need fitting
  3. Thanks lads, it's not a shortage of online suppliers, it's a shortage of local ones. I don't know what thread it is, so need to try out bolts till I find the right on. Yes Martin the Mastic treaty. After that everything was water tight. No more push me pull me, or closed loop holes anymore.
  4. Thanks Peter, Percy and all you other chaps, I knew you guys would come up with a dozen decent way of doing the job. Will get to the model shop asap and sort out a thingy that will fit through on the carb. Now just need to get the bolts to screw the engine in position. I took the model to the shop for some bolts to secure the engine. M3 says the chap and screws one in. Fine. So I come on home and last night thought I would trial fit the engine to see what I could do with this linkage and not have the engine moving all over the place. The inserts in the engine beams are not M3, or M4 as that was what the guy tried first. So now I need to find out what they are. Possibly 4BA of BSF or Whitworth. Annoying because I have loads of 4BA nuts but not one bolt. Of course all the good screw shops have now gone. I guess the Model is about 20 years old, before the Mastic treaty with the EU, which states that all models must be fitted with metric stuff. Hey Ho
  5. Shame these things are a million miles from me. NR Heathrow and they don't do aerobatics there.
  6. You chaps are all putting me to shame!! But in my defence, I must admit I do not always have the tools or odd scraps to do the jobs like you chaps. One of the things I have noticed is that nothing seems to fit. I have had to drill out a few holes on servo arms to fit linkages etc. Can the manufacture's not get their act together and all agree on what size the holes should be. Also what size pins and rods go through them. In the case of the throttle arm, I could drill it, but there would not be much meat left on the bone after. Same with servo arms etc. Anyway on the morrow will see what treats the model shop has in store. Perhaps the cave man should make a real non Heath Robinson system using his design, that bolts down on the engine lugs and make his fortune that way. If not perhaps I will do it and make mine Ha Ha. See you all soon Nigel N
  7. Thanks for that Tom. I had moved the arm out a little to try and get it to work. Have now moved back to where it was. Cheers Percy, will see what the model shop has tomorrow morning. I don't realy think that I could fit a Dubro as I am unable to get to the engine mount with out quite a bit of work. Although I could possibly fit it to the fuselage. But I like the small connector idea.
  8. Just been looking at the dubro system again, and I could fit the part that connects to the throttle arm and run the wire straight through that. That should work, If I can find one small enough to go through the throttle arm. Nigel N
  9. Thanks for all the great ideas. Yes Cymaz have tried that. Was ok for moving the linkage more in line but that was all. The Dubro Four Stroke throttle linkage is a great idea, but as the plane is already built will not be able to fit it now. Not quite sure on your solution Denis. The distance from the servo to the throttle is about 10 inches, there is also a drop between the two of about 2 1/2 inches, hence the Bowden cable set up. Not to sure how a ball link would work, so I think I will try Pauls suggestion but with a slight difference. I will pick up some smaller piano wire than I have at the moment so that I do not have to drill a bigger hole in the throttle arm, and use a brass collet as he has done. Then join the wire and Bowden cable together that way. A nice big Z bend should solve both the rocking and moving in and out problem.Have tried it out with a allan key and they gripped together well. It looks like it will work. If all ok should be able to solder the connection for a belt and braces approach. Will let you all know how it goes. Nigel N
  10. Hi Chaps, I am now having problems connecting the throttle to the servo. I have a steel snake cable running through a plastic tube that I cannot think what it's called. Anyway there is very little room between the firewall and the carb. When I put a link on the cable, the link takes up most of the room. I therefore get very little movement. The hole coming through the firewall and the throttle lever are also not in line. Now I am wondering if I can somehow solder a rod to the snake cable. I could then put a Z bend and a swinging set in the rod, and connect all up. I have included a couple of photos to help you see the problem. |I know you chaps are good and will come up with a simple wheeze to do the job.
  11. Just came across your project Nigel. Really nice workmanship. You must be a man of infinite patience.
  12. I got a pair as well. Tom you need to put them both on e-bay. As any dealer will tell, you always get more for a matching pair!! Nigel N
  13. Hi Caveman, tried to order on line, but it went wrong. So will phone them tomorrow. Thanks for that Nigel N
  14. Hi there come into the fold. All are welcome here. I like the flowers you have on the work bench. Shows the wife is prepared to get involved. Things have changed since we both first started modelling, but now you can have a good moan at the world not just up at the club. Nigel N
  15. See us Nigel's stick together
  16. Hi Don, and thanks for your wise and cautious words. I am not a complete beginner, although I have not flown for several years. When I last flew 2.4 ghz was just emerging from the shadows. Since then I have not really flown. So will start out with my old glider with an electric fan up front. Then move on to the Hepcat and the Carnival. Both 3 channel planes. Then onto the Arising star, and Precident Hi Boy. By then I hopefully will not be such a learner. That of course is if we ever get a break in the weather. The thing is, since I last flew things have moved on at a cracking pace. One of the beauty's of coming on here, is that there is a wealth of knowledge from folks who know the new ways. So I ask questions sometimes just to make sure I have it correct. The reason a 70 fourstroke is going in there, is because the guy who built it, built it with that in mind. So the engine mount bay is already for the engine. Even the holes for the needle valve are drilled and fit perfectly. Also I will have my chief test pilot there to start the flights if required. As the weather is so bad, and this plane has been in the loft for a few years then I thought It was about time I finished it off. After this one I have a D.H.71, which is a single wing Tiger Moth, followed by my old STOL, which crashed when the wings folded. So a bit to keep me going through the winter. Thanks again Don All the best Nigel N
  17. Well chaps good news. And well done to those who got the correct answer. There are thread things in the engine beams. Most likely M4 (I Hope). So I will get some bolts for it. Do I put a washer underneath the bolt. Should I try for hex bolts or allan bolts? AS to the exhaust I have had a word with the seller, and he is giving me a partial refund. Just engines have no exhausts in at the moment, but should be coming in next week. Now I have an extension exhaust pipe. See Photo Now the question is. Can I use it. This one is about 12" long I also have another one about 8" long. Could they be used to save the cost of the header pipe. Also when fitting the exhaust, do you have to put anything on the threads , or is it just tighten the thread and nut. That's all for now I think. Nigel
  18. Just bought 7 Stick it super glues from pound land for a pound. Great value
  19. Cheers chaps, You want piccys. I love piccys, every picky is worth a thousand. This one shows the exhaust system in the cylinder head. As you can see it is nearly the correct size, but not quite. A small reducer would solve the problem, as I don't really want to buy a whole new exhaust system. Now, Can you tell me why I cannot put the nuts on the engine side and not the fuselage side? I can see and get to the nuts that way, but not when the engine is installed the other way!! This is the front of the plane where the propeller will be. This is looking down onto the engine bay.     This is with the engine sitting in the engine bay. Not much room to get my pinkys in there.   And this is the top view of my engine in the engine bay. I had to remove both the needle valve and the whole of the airstop assembly to the carb to get this in. I will most likeky have to take a bit out of the fuselage to get the engine in with the airstop/choke bit for the carb. But only a few thou. Hope this helps Nigel N   bb Edited By nigel newby on 07/12/2018 00:44:22
