  1. In the "old days" it was just radio control, then servo reversers came along ( no thought or planning needed for control throw direction ) making life a little easier. Then adjustable "rates" came along further " deskilling" the hobby.

Mixing, that's the pilots job in the day ( elevons, mechanical mixing taken care of in design and making ) but today the tx computer does it.

Dreading having to have to have a computer to set up my new radio gear.

Gone for radio link t8fb (bt, UK spec) due  to cost and the 2 Rx that it comes with. Will post a thread about it and my experiences of it, hopefully all good, easy to set up and use, please god......

  2. Catastrophic flutter, yes I have heard that happen on a high speed swept back wing model, not mine.

I launched it for him and it flew great, fast and seemed in perfect control.

Then in a 30 degree ish dive we heard this " strange noise" which was elevator flutter.

Loss of control and it carried on in the dive, flew into the deck.

    One right off.

He also crashed his other model that day, a largish biplane.

I recon this crash was due to a discharged Rx battery as the model was difficult to start, it took ages to get going.

I did suggest that by that point the Rx battery was getting a bit low.

A bad day back in the late 80's.

Flutter can and will happen if allowed, I know, I heard it and saw/watched the result.

  3. I bought the £24 jobby from Lidl, just could not resist it.

Yeah it's a bit of a toy but I fly ( play ) it on the football field along with the ninja helo.

I fly the drone as if it is a fixed wing, but fly it slowly.

It's so easy to get disoriented with it, as it blends into the background trees which surround the pitch on 3 sides.

Tried coloured tape but that just seems to disappear, so rely on red bright rear red led, and "think" I am flying on/in it to keep orientation.

I think it was well worth the not much money. I got it and the helo to sharpen my mode one skills prior to model plane flying.

Hopefully the new radio gear will be here for the weekend, slope soaring again getting closer.

I will not be flying fixed wing, even small ones, from the pitch, the area is not suitable, the area is not big enough.

There is a fixed nut on the fuel intake side Rich so that is held as you tighten the nut on the needle side.

Which suggests the spray bar rotates with the throttle barrel ?

If it was designed so the spray bar does not rotate, there must be a means to stop it from rotating with the throttle barrel ?

Anyways, would be good to get the engine running again...and installed in a period model plane...

I am sure Andy will post feedback and some good news, a bit if "howling" merco music.

New piston ring so a carefully run in period.

    Ic engines are fun...

    Here is another Merco offering

Yes, this is the carb type on my marine units, and probably the 35 aero....from memory I thought the "barrel spring" was conical but picture shows it to be not, the larger coil spring next to the throttle barrel.

Spay bar hole is offset with the intake. Plus it definitely does not rotate with the barrel.

    DSC01290.JPG

Can you take this picture again without the woodscrew please...

Main needle spring clip bent, be carefully it may break...

Spray bar should rotate with the barrel...

  7. Andy, your picture of the carb parts show the carb body to have some "rounded" corners.

All the pictures of merco 61 's I have seen seem to have square ( rectangular section really ) carb bodies....

Is your carb correct for this engine ?

The more simple carbs like the paw type, and it appears yours, the spray bar is nutted to the rotating "barrel" and becomes part of the barrel when tight, so rotates with the barrel.

Does your engine have a threaded hole between the c/case exhaust ports for the exhaust flap ?

Some more research needed I feel....a "community search".....team work....

There will be enough tell tail and staining marks on the carb parts, added to some common sense and trial and error, to assemble the carb and fit it to your engine for a bench run, assuming all carb parts are present, run rich for first one, straight castor.....

  8. Using a similar can only help, as can the sayings, prop the dipping wing etc..

    2 crashes and a flyaway !

    Reason for the crashes ?

    Reason for the flyaway ?

    Reported ?

On your SIM, try landing downwind rather than into wind, for the practise, as one day you will have no option....

  9. Get a slope soarer for windy days !

In my hiboy days, we flew in low windy conditions, enough to allow the hiboy to hover, and even fly backwards as seen from the ground.

Good practise at hieght, on the verge of a tip stall etc., Open throttle a bit and forward ground speed again.

Ic powered ( magnum 40 ) with quite a large fuel tank, yes hiboy was a bit on the heavy side but flew well, even upsidedown on 3 channels.

I know, I flew it, flew the socks off it, did the book on 3 channels.

  10. Interesting article, so the fins are a seperate bit, maybe I will convert this marine unit to aero, will look in my offcut box for suitable alloy for fins and prop driver....the boat it came from, huntsman, is too heavy for me to carry to the lake, the big gate is locked, so will be a struggle with the "old pram transporter"...

I have some smaller boats to play with....I prefer wind powered yachts and slow electric, Leander Vic Smeed searider and HMS romper etc...

Anyone wanna sea rider x 1.5 scale, it fits in a bath....very stable and a dry boat....would make a good fishing "bait boat"....

Sorry, this is an aeromodeling site not fishing or boating....doh !

  11. I have looked at your picture again, perhaps your carb is like the paw type in design, spray bar rotates with the Venturi barrel ?

The carb stub will have an o ring between c/case and carb body...

There are visible tell tale marks/stains on the parts which should indicate how/where they came from/position....

  12. Admin, the allowed "edit time" is far toooooo short !

Anyways this is the merco 61 marine engine carb, being very similar to the carb on the 29 marine and 35 aero I have.

On these carbs, the Venturi barrel is spring loaded by a small wire conical spring which wants to push the barrel out of the carb body.

It is prevented from coming out via the small screw and nylon washer which located in a groove, which is inclined, so the barrel moves in and out as it is rotated.

The larger black screw is the idle or low speed needle, which is consistantly presented to the main jet hole, for a reliable and consistantly idle etc..

Your carb seems to have some rounded corners and seems a different design ?

The new paw 09 I have  ( and the paw 19 ) have a very simple single jet RC carb, with the spray bar rotating with the Venturi barrel...

Is your carb a merco one or has it been changed at some point.

Also, are the "cylinder cooling fins"  on your engine a seperate parts please ?

A picture of them would be good if they are....please.
